I had out of town visitors at the house last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And they wanted to see the local sights and to get out and have some fun!
So it was up to me to plan an itinerary of places to go go and things to do!
We started on Friday by heading to Warm Springs Georgia for lunch at the Bulloch House and after we were loaded with fried chicken and green tomatoes, we toured Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Little White House. We followed that with a trip to the spring itself, and then a visit to Dowdell's Know which was one of the late president's favorite picnic spots!
On Saturday we lunched at the famous Varsity Drive-in in Atlanta, followed by a trip to the Atlanta Zoo. After seeing all of the animals, we went to the Cyclorama to see the civil war museum in addition to the largest oil painting in the world! We finished Saturday off with a fine dinner at Frank's Fine Foods, right here in Coweta County!
Sunday morning took us back to downtown Atlanta, to visit the largest Aquarium in the world ...The Georgia Aquarium! While there, we toured the Titanic exhibit which has hundreds of artifacts recovered from under the sea. It was amazing. After the Aquarium, we spent the rest of the afternoon in Centennial Olympic Park, which was bustling with activity of a beautiful Spring Day.
Then it was off to Ru-Sans for sushi. The last thing we did was an auto tour of the beautiful antebellum homes in Newnan, where I work every day.
We all had a great time, and the truth is, I haven't really looked at where I live through the eyes of a tourist in a long time!
Atlanta is a great place to live, and there is plenty to do and see! We already have a long list of places to go and things to do next time!
And I can't wait!

Richard,
Isn't it amazing what we take for granted each day? Now you are really promoting your lovely city!! Thanks for the wonderful pictures and commentary!!
Richard that sounds like a wonderful time was had by all. Thanks for sharing and being our armchair travel guide. Now I know my grandson would love to see the worlds largest aquarium.
Nice local post Richard.
Where's Stone Mountain?
How's the water level in Lake Lanier?
Great pictures Richard. . .just wondering why don't you want to share those beautiful pictures with others? you have your name all over them and your disclaimer at the bottom is almost telling me to be very careful or I may get charge for reading your post?
I know about copyrights but. . there is a balance there that some people in Active Rain are taking it to the extreme. I personally think that if anyone takes one of my pics. .they are paying me a compliment.
We are NOT PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS!
Your pictures will not appear in the cover of Time Magazine suddenly. .trust me on this.
If you want to promote your city. . what better way than sharing your pictures with the world?
Sorry. .that is been bugging me for a few weeks now. . but it is just my opinion and if others want to take my comments too personal. .sorry~ That is not my intention.
Richard: great post. Love the photos and the concept- I've always heard of Stone Maountain. Would love to go there.
Great photos! My husband, two children, and I just took a getaway weekend - to Atlanta!! We, too, visited the Atlanta Zoo and the aquarium (though I was surprised at how crowded it was on a Friday afternoon, what recession???), along with the Coca-Cola Museum (over 50 kinds of soda to sample, hope you have a strong stomach), and the Natural History Museum. Ran out of time for the High Art Museum...
Again, excellent photos... We actually forgot the camera card, so didn't have it the full first day until we found our friend, Walgreens!
Sounds like a fun packed weekend and from Fridays blog I already know they got to experience the wonders of Atlanta traffic.
Richard, Sometimes it takes guests to get us back out to see local attractions. I hope the brothers picked up the lunch tab. Rich
Richard - great blog! Living in Destin, I have recently gone through the same process. In fact, I'm about to have a "weekend away" on the beach just down the road in Rosemary Beach (a whole 20 minutes from my home). It's refreshing and puts things back in perspective!
Richard, ain't it the truth. I had never been to the Empire State Building my whole life until we had friends visiting from Belgium. I did more in NYC that week than I had done in a long time.
Thanks for the reminder to get out and explore our own backyards...I always say I'll do that and keep putting it off. With this reminder and warm weather around the corner, maybe it's time!
Nice points Richard - I live right next to Manhattan, and so many people that live near me, never go anywhere near New York City ....I think they are missing out on experiencing one of the greatest cities in the world and what it has to offer !!!
The Varsity....went there years ago. Seem to recall sort of a Happy Days atmosphere!
Thanks for taking us along on your weekend Richard. Have fun catching up.
What a great weekend - thanks for sharing! We tend not to fully appreciate everything around us until someone else comes to town. And, as always, gorgeous photos.
Richard, great idea to learn our own area better. We need to know what is around us in order to fully market our area.
Dorie...
Thanks ... we were so lucky to have nearly perfect weather conditions all weekend ... and with all of the spring blooms everything was so beautiful!
Gail...
The aquarium is ALWAYS crowded, but it's so COOL. Thanks, as always my friend!
Lenn...
Stone Mountain is just East of Atlanta ... next trip will be Stone Mountain, The Carlos Museum, The High Museum and the World of Coke! We just ran out of time!
Lake Lanier is still down about fifteen feet, but more rain is on the way!
Fernando...
Thanks for your comment ... and I value your opinion ... and I'm going to address all of them in a post this afternoon, so be sure to check back!
Janice...
I'll bet you could spend a week in Atlanta and not see everything! There is so much to do. Thanks.
Penny...
We had the World of Coke on the agenda but we ran out of gas and saved it for next time! Also, the High and Fernbank are planned in the future! Thanks for the testimonial, I really appreciate the support!
Richard,
I love your photos, and there is a lot to do and see in Atlanta. We love to go down and visit.
Living in the South is the Best!
Hi Richard,
You are correct. Sometimes we have to look at our surroundings thru other peoples eyes to see what we really have. It's the same when an agent goes to sell his/her own home...the agent has to stop and try to look at things to see them the way a buyer would.
Great photos!
Great pictures. I guess Tour guide is a hat that we have to wear sometimes too. It was good for you to get "back in touch" with your town.
Nothing like having a local take you around to the sights. Maybe in a few years it might be a new career option for you.
Brother Richard - I didn't know it was the largest aquarium....hmmm, guess I'll have to add that to my list of must see aquariums (my wife and I visit aquariums and zoos whenever we can).
I think it's great to have out of town visitors to show around, they help us reconnect with all there is to do in our own backyard that we sometimes overlook.
It's always amazing that we can live in a place for ages and not truly see and enjoy our own areas. I have found this to be true all the way from Boston to Tampa and many points in between. Glad you got to take a little time and get reaquainted with your area. Makes you feel good, doesn't it?!
Laura J...
Yes, they got the true flavor of Atlanta traffic! lol
Rich...
My brothers are actually very generous and my money was "no good!"
Jessica...
I think that "refreshing" is an excellent choice of words! THX
You are right Richard. Easy to overlook the great things in our own back yard.
Sometimes it takes a visitor to remind us.
Thanks for writing,
Ken
Richard, as always beautiful photos. It's so true that we often don't look at what there is to see in our own backyards. Looks like you had lots of fun with your guests and it made for a really great localism post.
Richard: It is always refreshing to see our surroundings from the eyes of a tourist. Atlanta has been one of my favorite stops for years.
It sounds like you had a great time. I think you have earned a nap.
Richard, you know Atlanta and the surrounding areas and taking such great photos like you do, we all get to go along for the ride. Glad you and family had a great time.
Fantastic pictures! And you're right about seeing our areas as a tourists would. It sounds like you had a great time.
Its so amazing how often we go by stuff without really seeing them until we have a visitor with us. Its fun to be a tourist in your area. Gorgeous photos as always.
