The best laid plans of mice and men...

747 in Flight by Richard WeisserI have been looking forward to this weekend for some time. Three of my brothers are visiting me, two from Hartford and one from Pittsburgh. The weekend got off to a rocky start last night, just minutes after picking up the Connecticut twosome at the airport!

We were chatting and catching up on the drive back to the house, when all of a sudden traffic stopped on I-85 South. Now, I have traveled the highways and byways of the Atlanta area for many years, and I know right away we were in trouble.

The traffic was not moving at all. Dead stop. It was nine o'clock P.M. Luckily, we live in a connected society, so we were able to get the bad news quickly. I-85 was closed due to an accident, and was not expected to reopen until after midnight.

There was no way out. We were trapped in a dark parking lot, with no alternative other than to sit on the highway with thousands of others who were in the same predicament.

And although our plans were set askew, the fact was that we did the same thing we would have done at the house...told stories, laughed, talked about old songs ... and had a grand old time.

All that was missing was food and drink, (and a bathroom) and the sense of being in control. When we finally got past the accident scene on the one lane that was opened, it was past one A.M!

So we'll be getting a late start today, but we're all together and all the matters.

Note: we were able to alert my brother driving in from Pittsburgh about the closing, and were able to guide him around the traffic. He would have arrived two hours after us, instead, he beat us by that amount of time!

Richard, anywhere you go, you manage to make the best of it!  Great attitude.  I'm sure that you all possess the same quality, and I know you will have a blast this weekend!  You deserve it!

The car is a great chat place.  Captive audience.  When it was time to visit with my daughter about the birds and bees I used a long car ride, just the two of us.  I had tried before and she would just get up and leave, so now I had her.  All addressed and now at 21 years old we just laugh about it.  Have a wonderful visit with family!

Richard, sounds like you and your brothers had a good time catching up in the car. Have a good time with them this weekend.

Richard, I have been tied up in traffic like that once for three hours when a fuel tanker fell over and blew up. What are you going to do? The price for living in a highly populated area. Massive frustration. Glad you eventually made it home.

Richard, I was in traffic for 15 hours, and 3 different accidents...All you can is make the best of it...so I wrote this article while sitting in traffic.. Acidents, Accidents, Accidents -- A Terrible Day for Traveling

Brother Richard - More interesting facts.  Hartford?  My father and mother grew up in and around Hartford.  Perhaps there's more to this than we thought.  Tell the brothers to have a great time and I hope you enjoy it.

Visiting with family is great fun. Even if you are stuck in traffic for 4 hours! I'm looking forward to hearing more about the brother's weekend!

Your brothers are bringing you bad luck, send them back! At least you had someone to talk with while you were trapped, just think if you had been alone.

Richard...enjoy your visit. I suspect it to be a lot of laughs.  I expect at least one photo with someone wearing a lamp shade! ;-)

Sounds like you made the best of the situation...and even got a blog out of it.  Next time, though, don't forget the six pack and the pretzels.  LOL

Sometimes the best and most memorable times are times like these, when you make the most of something that would normally aggrevate you. I am glad to hear you persevered and had a good time during a "not so good time."

Richard, Nice way to handle a situation you could do nothing about anyway. Have a great time with your brothers.

Richard....my thought is always that I think I am inconvienced by an accident, but think of what someone else is going through.....

Glad you were able to share good times and that it was not you in the accident!

I'm sorry about the delay, but at least you weren't sitting in traffic not being able to laugh and have the fun. Boy, I love the invention of the cell phone!

Sounds like you adjusted to the situation well and enjoyed your time together. So many people just look at the problem and try to blame. Have a great weekend.

Hi Richard,

sorry to hear of your dilemma, but glad to hear you made the best of it.

Hmmm, funny, I 85 up by me was smooth sailing that night... ; )

Hi Richard, Frustrating to be stuck in traffic - but I'm glad you were all stuck together -- instead of the other way around-- you stuck, and them waiting in the airport!  Sounds like you had a good time, anyway!

Hi Richard!
Way to go...making the best out of a frustrating situation!

Just think, you could have been by yourself. Instead, you had great company and made good use of your time. :)
