Do you have enough memory storage? How to back up your photos on the cheap!

Grain Storage Siloes in Winter by Richard Weisser

Memory has become less and less expensive every month since the early days of computers. I was in a discount shopper's club a few weeks ago and something occurred to me.

They had two 4GB memory cards on sale for $25.

And even at a resolution of 10 megapixels, a four gig card will store over a thousand photos. That's about one and a quarter cents each. Even if you NEVER move the photos off the card!

And since a DVD writer can back up 4 GB on a single dollar disk, you can have a permanent backup of your memory card for less than a penny a shot!

So now I buy SD cards like I used to buy film ... strictly for one time use. I can keep the photos on the card with a full disk backup for pennies a photo. I don't even delete anything anymore, at these prices, what's the point?

That's good to know but here's the better news? Memory will only get cheaper and smaller as time goes on!

Richard, memory is surely so cheap these days. but DVD is not a good way to store photo though. I usually store a few copies in at least three hard drives.

Posted by real estate real estate almost 3 years ago

Huiting...

I'm just trying to eliminate the "motorized" aspect of storage, Hard drives can fail, I knocked my 1TB external drive over and it shattered ... what a loss!

I had been backing up to a large drive on my wireless network at home too ... but I'm thinking the DVDs would be great to store in a remote location in case of fire etc.

As digital memory becomes cheaper, and cheaper... my "ACTUAL" memory is becoming smaller and smaller...

er.... what were we talking about?

Richard,  That is actually the same system I use these days.

Shoot on a card until it is full, then label it with the date, put it away, and start a new card.

Every so often buy a bag full of new memory cards.

Richard,

Thanks for sharing.  I hadn't put the pencil to it and had been deleting all those pictures off the card so I could use it again.  Wow, my time is worth more than that!  Thanks again!

Richard,

It gets cheaper but the "readers" go out of style....  look at the 3.5 disks. You cannot find the drivers for those anymore....

What I do- When I obtain a listing I take a bazillion pictures.  (I am not skilled in taking photos so I need a lot to choose from for MLS).  In a file I have already created called 'Listings' the address is created in a sub-file.  I make other sub-files for pictures, emails, contracts, offers, etc...  Then when I am working on my taxes I create a disk to save all the files, for that year, then delete them from my hard drive.  It works for me.  Am I doing it wrong???

Posted by Melody Botting Real Estate Network almost 3 years ago

Ok, maybe I should add I delete them off my card as soon as I download them to the address file.  I need space on the card for more pics.  Maybe my dog will do something cute!!!

It sure is diffrent when we used to take the photos and have all of them developed to see which ones turned out.

Richard, 50% off during the Circuit City bankruptcy. Everything in the store was picked over except memory cards. Go figure. Rich

Alan...

I know what you mean ... I know exactly what you mean! lol

Cheryl...

Just be sure you back the cards up on one other device ... one spark of static and they're history!

Cindy...

They are so cheap now there is no reason to delete! Thanks to all for the comments.

Ann...

You must transfer before the data format becomes obsolete. Can you believe that little 4GB card hold the same amount of data as 3000 of those little disks? WOW

Melodious...

Wow, that sounds like a lot of work but it makes sense because if you do it the same for every listing you know how to find your house fast .... and buy some memory cards just for the dogs why don't ya?

I need bigger memory cards for my videos, but I have plenty of room for my photos. And I have an 8 gig memory stick, and a 300 gig external hard drive for backing everything up. =)

Richard,

All of my photos are backed up through Carbonite - the online protection service that backs up everything I tell it to. :)

I use a Lacie external hard drive and then I burn my listings to a CD. I also burn family pics to CD and distribute it to family. If I ever lose them they have them.

Richard - great advice.  Your post has been featured in the photography group.

I am going to run to Circuit City to see if I can still find some memory cards.  I usually erase some of the pictures in my memory card but at that price, you guys are right about keeping them.  An extra back up will never hurt.  Thanks for sharing that idea.

When you think about that way it makes perfect sense.

Richard:  Great advice.  Seems the very year I began to embrace digital photography was the year I lost some photos very precious to me in a computer crash.  No computer crash has upset me so much.

Richard I have spent hours and hours and hours scanning old family photos.  I gave my mother in law, my mother, my brother and my daughter digital photo frames with lots of great ones on it for Christmas gifts and then I made back up DVD's for the rest of the family... which they will be getting as birthday gifts throughout the year.  I treasure old photographs so much and just love the affordability of this new digital era. I hadn't thought of just keeping the SD cards though... a great idea.

I have been accused of having MY memory in storage and unavailable.

It is true Richard.  Today storage is very cheap!

I bought an external potable drive at costco for about 100 bucks.  It works great, I think it holds about 100,000 photos. Mindy

Keeping the SD card is a great idea - but even better is keeping duplicate copies, whether they are more SD cards, a hard drive, a DVD, or whatever.

I can remember when memory cost almost as much as houses do today.  Now they are for one time use.  Go figure.

Richard, that's great advice. We were just having a discussion Saturday about how cheap memory has gotten and I was thinking of maybe storing my photos on the original card. Naturally, you've already thought of it!

Posted by Maria Morton, Kansas City Real Estate (Prudential Kansas City Realty) almost 3 years ago

hmm interesting, though. If you do store a lot of foto's on those small sd cards I think it is important to archive it very well.

number them, make a list  with what photo's are on which cards. otherwise you end up searching hours and hours if you need to find sth back.

Posted by Sabine van Gameren (AOS-Studley) almost 3 years ago

Great post Richard, but I still archive my important family pictures to film. Sounds antiquated, but still the best medium to archive on.
