Real Estate and the Economy ... and the Reason Why We Can Look to the Future with Optimism!

Statue of soldier by Richard WeisserUnless you have been living in a vacuum, you know that there are some serious problems associated with the American economy of today! The downward spiral is fueled by many factors, including over-expansion and the abuse of readily available credit.

It's a mess, all right, and there are a lot of occurrences every day can make even the most optimistic prognosticator squeamish. But there is one reason that America will emerge from all of this as a stronger and better nation.

And that reason is the American spirit.

We are not fatalists. We don't give up easily, and we fight for what is ours.

As Americans, we won't go down as a collective cadre of commiserating craven quitters, but rather, we will emerge as victorious soldiers, purged by fire and battle-tested that have vanquished the approaching enemy and plundered the spoils of combat.

So to those that are on the front lines now, I bid you courage, perseverance and determination. But let's not sit idly by and wait for the infiltrators to erode our confidence in our own abilities. It's time for the onslaught against the invaders and their message of doom and gloom.

Who is ready to fight?

Yes! A+!  There is so much negativity and if we would all just stay positive, we'd be so much better off.  We may not be rich but at least we will be happier and have more friends to be poor with.  =)  It's never fun getting laid off or in my case watching many friends get laid off, but we still have the future to look forward to and we need to prepare for it now instead of just sitting around waiting for things to change.

Thanks for posting!

You bet we are fighters.

We will prevail, we will learn from all this, and we will emerge an even better nation.

And yes, we will leave some wounded and casualties.

Richard- normally I would agree with you on this, and personally, I am one that is ready to fight. However, I am not so sure about "the American Spirit" anymore. And while it might not have totally morphed into fatalism, it has morphed into victimhood and entitlement on a very high percentage, including those in government who are doing all they can to make sure that we can not rise up from our bootstraps and defeat this.

However, I will continue to "keep on keepin' on" with the intent to succeed and make this a better home, a better community and a better country.

Richard, the one thing to fight for is to not have the government take over private business. With these massive spending plans too much of that is going on. We'll get through this. Socialism is not the answer for an ailing economy.

Richard,

I think that you have hit the neil on the head.  My only thought is is the question the right question?  My thought is that it should be more of a statement and that being DON'T STOP FIGHTING!!

Posted by Don Rogers REALTOR®, CDPE, GRI O'Fallon MO & St Charles County MO homes (RE/MAX Gold) over 3 years ago

Now you're talking my language.

I keep reminding folks that neiTher the President, the Congress, the Wall Street gangs, the banks or the real estate industry is THE AMERICAN CITIZEN.

I always think of the millions of hard working folks who get up every morning, get dressed, get the children off to work, go to their own job or jobs, work hard all day and go home every evening to be with their family.

That is the America I know and that's why we do what we do and make a good living at it IF we keep our focus on serving the American citizen.

No President or Congress can do for America that which the American spirit will do for themselves.  They haven't really spoken yet.  When they do.  WATCH OUT!!!

They are America.

Yes, the American spirit will see me and everyone else through this.  Plus the fact that people want things and are willing to pay for them at the right price.  The market is doing what it is supposed to do and correcting the mistakes of the past.

Every day when I go out, I see the same amount of cars driving the same congested streets. You see, it's reassuring to know the world hasn't come to an end.

Last week when I went to the mall with a friend, we had to drive up and down the aisles to find a parking space. This was in the middle of the week and not a holiday.

People are still going about their business ... and wow ... shopping!

Even I, the frugal nutcase that I am, bought a DVD. Okay, it was on sale. But I bought it. I splurged. At $12.99. For a Blu-Ray disc yet. This alone gives me optimism.

Posted by Judy Chapman (Koenig & Strey Real Living) over 3 years ago

I agree that many Americans still have that spirit to fight and move forward.  There are however probably 50% of the American people that don't have this spirit and think that the government and society owes them a living or a handout.  Right now those people are in power in our government and continue to make it grow more and more out of control every day.  I am a little more pessimistic as to the long-term prosperity of America unless some drastic changes happen very soon in this country.  It seems we have been headed in the direction of bigger government and more handouts ever since the Great Society of the 1960's, Bush expanded government tremendously while he was President, and it appears Obama is going to do the same.  At some point this whole idea of big government and handouts is going to implode on itself.

I specifically look for positive news and really appreciate the call to action and how are we going to be part of the solution not the problem. I think negativity and fear are the easy way sometimes.  It takes something  more (call it what you will) to take the high road.

Good post Richard. And I agree, the American spirit will never die.  And I too am very hopeful for a sound recovery.  That's why I work 70-80 hours a week at this profession.  Because I know, when things do to turn up, that all my hardwork and perserverance will pay off.  However, I am going to take a contrarian view to some of the opinions posted here.  And that is, the fear factor is working the other way too.  That being the fear of THE GOVERNMENT!  I for one, in my 41 years of existence on this planet have not been fearful of my government.  I've never felt that my government has oppressed me in anyway.  Yes, they make mistakes. They are human. We all make mistakes.  Let me add to this, I am a Republican.  Albeit it moderate.  When I hear people so critical, condeming and fearful of our government I have to remind everyone of those three little words that introduce the Constitution, "We the people..."  WE are the GOVERNMENT.  I might be naive in my belief of this notion. But we do elect these officials.  They come from our ranks. They are not placed here from some far off planet to lord over us.  But to say that the government has never done anything good and that the free market knows best I think is a little naive.  Corporations and individuals make A LOT of mistakes as well.  So let's take a "fair and balanced" approach to this situation. Government is not ALL bad, nor is it the saving grace.  And corporations are not ALL bad. Nor are they the omnipotent force that some would like us to believe.  They are all comprised of PEOPLE. And PEOPLE make mistakes. But I do believe that PEOPLE for the most part, are good at heart.  Thank you for the post.  Best of luck.

Richard - We can change the perception of our offices (sales agent and staff), then our community and then who knows.  It all starts in our one to one conversations with our fellow agents and our clients.  I have seen and experienced it here in my office.  Everyone is working hard, going back to basics plus learning a lot of news.  I actually am very proud of my office and the people I work with and it shows in our numbers.  2008 vs. 2007 we are up in closed units by over 10%, up in volume up in GCI etc.  You can not falter and dwell upon the market.  Keep busy working your business plan.  It will work!!

Great post!

Gary and Mike, I'm with you. WE THE PEOPLE are the solution to this problem....and we will move forward even with huge obstacles and horrible legislation. Government hinders progress. It is not now, nor has it ever been the solution to our problems, but I am amazed at the number of people out there that truly believe that government should run everything and will do everything for them...and for FREE no less! I am not sure why so many see the grass being greener over in Europe...but they are heading back toward Capitalism after learning serious mistakes over there and we are going the opposite direction. Thomas Sowell will also tell you that Socialism has never worked EVER in history.

I love America and the opportunities I have in my local market right now! We are seeing some improvement up here....I just need to get the word out about all of the tax advantages and business/private opportunities available in Nevada. I have already had great success so far this year and have several buyers that I actually got from my internet sites and blogging.

FULL STEAM AHEAD....I am staying involved, working hard and doing the very best job possible to help my clients. I am stimulating the economy and am totally focused on making 2009 AWESOME! Good luck to all of you!

Hi Richard!
You bring back memories of how I felt after 9/11.  We came together as a nation and mourned the loss of so many lives. At the same time, American flags went up everywhere.  Terms like "I" and "me" were replaced with "we" and "our".  We were one, for a short time.  Thanks for pointing out that we can be that way again.

What is this "American Spirit" you speak of and how does it differ from the Russian or Japanese or Bora Bora spirit? Nationalism is one of the most dangerous and overblown ideals to seep into the human psyhe and more often than not is nothing more than an empty platitude that has little to no substance... but it sounds good.

Wow, the comment box has changed since I took my lovely wife out for a birthday meal ... I am not sure if I can catch up and respond to all, but I would like to add this about the American spirit...

The "American Spirit" is one on both independence and standing up for what is right. We are NOT like the nationalistic Bolsheviks of Russia or the Communist Nationalists of china because ....

We have the FREEDOM OF CHOICE!

That's what separates us and makes us different!

Posted by David Matney over 3 years ago

What makes us different from say the English, Danes, French, or Papua New Guinea, et al?  Seems people are people and to say we have some special genetic gift that places our "spirit" above and beyond other people's who have freedom of choice is nonsense. But again, it sounds good but a tad on the "propoganda" side of the coin with little substance to back it up.

I'm not certain what you mean by fight.  Fight what?  Fight to survive?

I love a good fight but it needs to be for a good purpose.

I'd hope that most people would fight for some common values we all share and value.  As Americans, I would hope that fighting for the Constitutional system that we were founded on would be the good fight. But all I see is people fighting for favors from the government.

I don't think the majority of Americans really want to fight.  They talk a good fight but when it comes down to action, they really don't want to rock the boat.  How else do you explain that almost all of the incumbents in Congress got voted back in.  This was one month after people were calling in 90 to 1 against the initial TARP.  So Congress went and voted for TARP even though their constituents were strongly against it and then we reward them by voting them back in?
