It seems that it years past; I had a lot more free time than I do now. I used to spend countless hours on my hobbies and passions, but now the available moments for diversions are few and far between.
About 20 years ago, when I took the photograph attached to this post, I started from the very beginning! I raised the roses in my garden. I had climbers on trellises and hybrid tea roses of every color and description. As a matter of fact, most of my flower photographs are from this era.
I carefully lit and set up the shot, setting an iridescent blue vase in front of a black backdrop. I methodically cut and arranged the flowers over and over until I got the "look" that I was seeking to achieve.
I placed the camera carefully upon the tripod, and selected a thirty second exposure at minimum aperture with a rear curtain flash from slightly to the right of the still life.
While the shutter was open, I "painted" the vase with a flashlight to make it glow eerily. Since this was a film photograph, I took only five or six frames. And I hoped for the best as I patiently waited for the transparencies to be developed.
The result was one of my all-time favorite photographs. And although I had spent a lot of time on it, the results of the time that I invested thrill me to this day.
And so I am determined to find more time to do the kinds of things that are lasting, enduring and satisfying. And I firmly believe at some point down the road of life, I'll be very glad that I did!

It is GORGEOUS! When I used to have time, I used to sew and do other crafts. Now I spend all my time on AR (just kidding - I mean work and kids!)
You have sucha a talent my friend and thank you for sharing it with us here in AR.
I think that is typical for all of us - our hobbies suffer first when our business picks up!
Beautiful, I used to paint. Maybe I should change it to, I paint and that means that it is not gone. We all have passions that get put on the shelf for awhile but as long as they still burn, they will find their time to be taken off the shelf and played again. You have a great talent.
This is beautiful and you made it look effortless which is the mark of a real artist! I can't wait for spring to come here, so I can do one of the things I love best, plant flowers!

I know it ... why don't we have the time any more? It's a mystery, that's for sure.
Don...
Thanks, my friend. I just wanted to use this photo today, and I thought that I would tell its history!
BarbaraJo...
But I don't think that O worked less then ... I just wonder? Thanks for the comment.
Treva...
Ah, but our allotted time is finite ... we don't know what tomorrow might bring! Thanks for jumping in on the conversation!
Susan...
That reminds me ... I owe Mel a gardening in the South post, I need to get on that ASAP! Thanks, my dear.
"If I could put time in a bottle...."
Richard - you've captured time in that vase! Remarkable!
Richard- I am pretty sure there are the same amount of hours in a day as there were when I was in my twenties, thirties and forties, but I think they go so much faster now. Like you, I got so much more done in the course of a day. Excellent time invested in this photograph. I am pretty certain I am not going to find any more time out there, I pretty much spend every minute of it allotted to me. But, just like money, I am going to have to reprioritize my time in order to get as much done as I want to.
Lovely photo Richard. I can certainly appreciate the need for taking time to smell the roses, or photograph them for that matter. It seems to go with the life of a Realtor who is often on call 12/7 if not more. Woodworking is the thing I enjoyed. I built one corner cabinet in 1984 and haven't gotten back to it since. I guess priorities change over time. Now I play squash and sing in my spare time. Work and studying for my MBA consume most of the days. Good Selling!
Would that be Melody Botting? (as said in a British accent)!
Richard, get to work! I want to see more pics and the post I have been waiting for.
Susan, you know that gave me a big chuckle. I was already laughing about the vblog from the beginning.
Richard,
Time is my best friend and my worst enemy. After all this time I've never been able to tame it either.

Jim...
I love that Jim Croce song ... maybe I was thinking about that in the back of my mind! Thanks for the comment.
Mike...
Funny, I don't remember doing as many chores back then ... could it be that we are spending more time resting??? Thanks, as always my friend.
Greg...
Wow, it sounds like you are doing PLENTY! Best of luck with your MBA! And thank for the great comment.
Richard, There is much to be said for spending time on things you are passionate about. Keep on doing that.
Richard...Having a passion for work or play comes from wanting to do or be the best. I am willing to bet that you are never totally satisfied. That you feel 'it' could have been just a bit better. That's what makes us good at what we do!
Pretty picture of the flowers.....I love flowers and photography and it makes me happy to see the flowers again in springtime. A new beginning after a long very cold winter in the "Live Free or Die State" of NH. I can't wait. It's sunny and clear today, quite cold, but it felt like spring when I saw this lovely photo.

Richard - perhaps we didn't view some of those things as chores as much as expressions of ourselves.
Hi Richard:
Beautiful photo...
RW - Great shot! You should be very proud of it. I used to do a ton of crafts also that seemed to have gone by the way side. kM
Nice picture Richard. I use to have more time for my fishing habit. I don't intend to work this hard the rest of my life.
Since when has doing things that you want to do in this life ever made someone happy? I hope you get to devote a ton of time to everything you want to do my friend, it sounds like fun to me.
Richard: You are such a talented man! The more time you spend on these hobbies, the more blessed we will all be by the products.
Susan...
Well is looks like our Sheldon is a thief of hearts! ;)
Mel...
I'm working on it! lol
Rich...
Seems like there is never a moment to spare! THX
I think I've forgotten what hobbies are! Gorgeous photo....as always. And darn now I've been gone so long that I'm missing the inside jokes!
When I have time I read. It relaxes me. Lately i've been making time to read again. Sometimes I sit with the kids while they are playing and read for a few minutes. It makes me a much happier person. Hope you have a great day.
I've lately been taking the time for myself and reading more. Walking more and writing more. I'm a much happier and efficent at work person when I take time for my soul
I do enjoy your photos but it seems like so much work. I'm glad you enjoy it.
I've long said that all this technology will never give us more time... it simply allows us to pack more into an already busy day. That said, we have to find the time to stop and smell the roses for there's a great deal of peace to be had doing so. Excellent photo my friend.
Richard, it's true we never have enough time! The roses and vase are stunning. I can see why it's one of your favorites. One of my hobbies that I haven't seemed to enjoy lately is reading. I have a small book that I can't seem to get finished. I think this means it's time for a vacation.
You are right about no time to do anything anymore! I wish I had something in my life to be passionate about like you have.
Not theory grasshopper. Do! When you're dead, it is forever! Do it now! Hug you're kids! Do what's important-not expediant.
