Coweta Fayette Real Estate & Newnan Homes for sale blog by Richard Weisser of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Metro Brokers

Technology can make a bad situation better, and that's a good thing!

Red White and BlueI'm sitting in the waiting room at the Piedmont Fayette Hospital, waiting for word on my mother-in-law's condition. We brought her to the emergency room because called and said that she wasn't feeling good, and when we got to her house, we decided that she needed to see a doctor.

So we drove her over to the emergency room, and as you might expect on a Sunday afternoon, the place is packed.

It used to be that you just sit around and waited and waited and waited. But no more!

With my laptop and public Wi-Fi, I can conduct "business as usual." And while I am working, I can also listen to great music on the headphones. It's amazing, what used to be an excruciating wait in an unfamiliar environment is now no different than sitting at my kitchen table.

Technology never ceases to amaze me, and the ability to utilize it in every day situations can make unpleasant circumstances more palatable.

It's a tiny thread on normalcy in an uncertain world.

Note: They admitted her to the hospital, so she will have excellent care through the night.

I hope your mother-in-law is doing better! This is an excellent reminder to be prepared for less stress for these inevitable times! Waiting...doesn't need to be so agonizing when you can stay connected online.

I love portable technology. Yet I gave up the data plan on my phone. Carrying my laptop with an aircard makes me much more capable. Yes, I love tech toys!

Have to agree with Karen (although we don't know the issue at hand). Hope both your wife and mother-in-law are well. I'm a work-a-holic as well but I hesitate at being in the Emergency with a laptop. Family is important and should be supported.

Yeah, I too am trying to picture the "hang on honey... I need to grab my laptop" as we rush your mother to the hospital.  The competition in the hospital business can be intense.  I noticed on my last hospital visit that the food was actually good, there was free coffee and donuts in the waiting room, and wifi.  However, I was only bold enough to bring my phone - which does have internet access so I saved my minutes.

WiFi is a godsend - now I'm praying God visits your mother-in-law :)

I am so spoiled by having constant access to communication that anytime I am without it I feel like I just might suffocate!

My cell phone died while on a business trip and I was without it for about 12 hours.

Now it wasn't just my cell phone I was missing, it was my email and my internet access!

I was actually queasy!

Best wishes to your mother-in-law for a speedy diagnosis and a fast recovery.

Richard, good point. Technology can "take you away" and make time fly by much faster in those waiting room times. Hope your mother-in-law is ok.

Mara...

It made the day go faster, that's for sure!

Michael...

Yes, i got to see the game! And it was a great one!

Karen...

She was allowed back in the "little room" with her mom, and I was stuck out in the waiting room alone!

Richard, I'm sorry... I hope your MIL is doing ok.  Hopefully it's nothing serious and she'll be back home before she knows it.

I agree with you 100% about technology... there are many places here where there is simply no cell coverage.  With a little help from our satellite phone, we can talk and surf the net from anywhere in the world... even 75 miles from home where coverage is zilch.  Gotta love technology!

Thoughts and prayers for your mother-in-law.  Technology is allowing us to work just about anywhere these days.  It is helpful when something unexpected happens.

Richard,

Sorry about your mother-in-law.  I think it is great that you are productive any place you are - and what a great way to keep yourself occupied in a hospital waiting room......

I hope she is feeling better now.  Hospitals are the worst!  Waiting rooms are getting better but I still hate them.  Here is something I learned- if you go into the ER they will make you wait unless you chest pain.  It trumps almost everyone else.

Richard, hope your mom-in-law is OK.  Now if only the hospitals could put that technology to work and speed up the wait time...

Technology has certainly made waiting a lot more tolerable. Hope your mother in law is feeling better.

Gosh, Richard darling, hope your situation is better.  Mother-in-law, who is probably mom by now, is better, and you had a better weekend.  I'm still seeing you rockin' out at the bar! I love your posts.  We really get an inside look!!!!  Take care!

You do have to love that the hospitals are doing things like this. If you think about it, you would have been sitting there for two hours just thinking about all that could be wrong and instead the time went by a lot faster and you weren't up and down asking the nurse if they had heard anything yet.
