Coincidence is a strange and vague concept. The laws of probability state that if you have a sufficient number of observable candidates needed to meet any specific criteria, you will likely find a match for the given parameters.
And if nothing else, the universe certainly meets the quantity test, with billions and billions of stars and goodness knows how many planetary systems are out there in the vastness of space.
Yet, what are the odds, that a single lump of iron would be just the right distance, from just the right sized star? And what are the odds that this serendipitous spinning sphere would be tilted at just the right angle to ensure that ambient temperatures allow water to freeze and thaw?
And again, what are the odds that there is just enough air captured in it's atmosphere to insulate the planet from both extreme temperature differentials, and that protects it from rogue marauders from outer space that are consumed daily in a bath of oxygen and fire?
And what are the odds, that there is enough water on this planet to create a weather system that constantly recycles and redistributes itself across the globe, allowing carbon based life to exist and flourish?
And finally, is it all just the result of Earth winning some incredible cosmic lottery, or is it by carefully crafted design that our gleaming blue aggie is the perfect environment for intelligent life?
As a scientist, I prefer to believe the latter, it seems more plausible to me!

It takes my breath away simply pondering it.
Mel...
Sometimes I needed to be reminded that I am just a wee speck in the grand scheme of things ... and I find solace in the fact that there really is a master plan out there!
Beautiful thoughts for such a blue January morning. Makes all my little teeny tiny problems and annoyances seem very insignificant. Thanks, Richard!
Richard, Great post! It's pretty deep thinking for this early in the morning, but it does make some of the other issues seem insignificant. Great pictures to help the visualization!
Richard,
I often wonder whether we're alone, and usually conclude that we're not. If you've ever read Scott Adams, the answer is 42.
Rich
I always try to put that in to prespective for people. Can you really believe that this all "just works" and happened to fall into place on its own. It is a miracle that I was once a microscopic organism and have grown into a full blown human being. There has to be a higher power.
RW,
I do not think that earth won any type of a lottery, although I must admit this is the first time I have heard this argument. I believe that it is due to a devine plan.
Hi Richard. You sure are tackling a big question this morning.
Thanks for writing,
Ken
I think we won the lottery. There are many things in this life that we may never know, but one day we might find the answer to your question on an individual basis.
Great post that makes one think. My thought while reading is "GOD is Good!
Once again you get my thinking cap going before my coffee sets in for the day! Beautifully written post... with gorgeous photographs as usual! ~A:)
Suzanne...
And that was my intention ... so thanks! ;)
T&D...
I actually wanted to use something more cosmic, but I think that the pics worked too! THX
Rich...
Did you mean Douglas Adams? And I can live with 42!
Richard - terrific photographs, thoughtful post. I have a hard time attributing the creation of the universe to the serendipity of just the right matter and just the right energy and just the right conditions at just the right instance, at just the right......but the big question is, where did it all come from anyway?
Richard,
Yes, Doug it was. Scott is the brilliant Dilbert creator. Must have been a brain fart.
Rich
I checked with Vegas and odds are about 12763 to 1. Really...it does boggle the mind! Scientists try to show how and the reasons...but, I feel it was the buildong process of devine intervention!
Well served Richie!!
I can't help but believe we're the result of the Fathers plan. Life is too intricate to be a cosmic accident. I've long said if we could put the rhetoric aside, science would some days prove the existence of our heavenly Father. Until then my faith in Him is all I need. Good post my friend.
wow ! ... deep !
... and ridiculously amazing pictures !
Cheers Richard !
Sheldon ;o)
David...
I accept you statement as valid! Thanks for adding to the conversation!
Don...
How can you say that is is not? Thanks, as always. my friend.
Ken...
I do not run from controversy! lol and thanks.
Richard, what proof do you have that it was not a comic accident. Wanting to believe something and supporting it with scientific proof seems to be a broad leap of "faith" which, of course, is all it is... faith. Until someone brings something of substance to the debate other than "it just has to be because it's just so beautiful" I'm staying on the comic lottery side of things.

The substance is the faith for many people.
Beautiful post and photos, Richard.
Hi Richard,
You ask, "What are the odds?" Absolutely staggering! Have you read the book Rare Earth?
