There are many awe inspiring destinations to see around the globe. Many an hour is spent carefully planning and making expensive travel arrangements to far off places in an effort to capture the sights and sounds of exotic destinations.
And in doing so, we often overlook the scenic treasures that are closest to home. Every locale has it local "spots" that define the region, and most of us drive past these landmarks every day without so much as a passing glance.
But that which is common in one region, is foreign in another, and with the miracle of digital photography and the Internet, we have the opportunity to visually share our communities with the world.
So do not hesitate to digitally document the local treasures within thirty minutes of your home, and display them for the online world to experience.
The additional exposure that you will get as a result of your efforts may surprise you!

Hi Richard:
You make a great point! Nice photo also....
There's no place like home!
My friend form Calagary came down over the holidays. She asked how many times I have been to Times Square and spent New Years Eve and New Years Day in NYC? She then asked how often I have been to the Statue of Liberty, etc.? You know.........this year was the first time for Times Square. I have been to the Statue only twice, even though I have lived in the area for 51 years! You are so right. One should look closely. We spent 8 days having wonderful day trips. You were right on with your article!
Hi Richard- I agree with you completely. Sometimes a vacation in one's own backyard is the best vacation of all! Great photo!
Richard,
That is very true. Things which seem ordinary to us - whether natural beauty or special attractions - are considered special by people in other areas - and worth visiting. :)
Steve
Richard,
Localism has renewed my interest in my own area. I have taken more photos of the beautiful place I call home (or more importantly spent time with my husband while forcing him to take the photos) and couldn't agree with you more. Another great post....another great photo.....you are just perfect.....
For me it takes out of town visitors for me to focus on what is around me. My brother-in-law came a couple of years ago. Would you believe he wanted to see a rodeo? I thinking I saw them for the first twenty years of my life and could care less now. Regardless, it was fun.
Richard, We have tons of treasures in downtown Cleveland and I don't go there often enough but I will make a point of going more often...think I will wait til some of the snow melts though!
Richard
What a great picture - makes me want to go and visit!
Toula...
Thanks, that photo is one of my favorites!
Steve B...
Wow, thanks for such a frank response. NYC is a top tourist destination, and you have plenty that you can share so GET GOING! lol
Richard, we sometimes take where we live for granted because we may see or drive by these places every day. I can't tell you how many time I've driven past the White House, the Washington Monument or the Capital Building, and the Smithsonian Institute and associated museums. You're right, we don't have to travel far to see many great sights in our own back yard. Thanks.
I have a bad habit of over looking what's in my own backyard from time to time. I think it's just a part of human nature to go some where less familiar.
I live in what others call a resort town. People come from all over the world to vacation here. Funny, I think I have to leave to have a vacation. It's a beautiful day on Cape Cod!
That is so true..... Born and raised in Houston and never visited NASA. Lived in San Diego and went to the Zoo once. Live now in Austin and have seen the 5 million bats take off once. I did make the mistake by going to our Halloween bash with 100k people. That won't happen again. It is a amazing to see tourist come to your town to see certain things, yet we don't. Don't know why, but that is odd..........
Richard - I am trying to put together a Bucket List of things that you should do if you live in Louisville. The sad part is there are a few that I haven't done. One of my goals this year is to change that.
So very true Richard! Thats what I love about 'localism' and playing tourist in your own town on occasion!.......The world is an amazing place though.......I think Traveling is one of my greatest passions.........and thus photography goes hand and hand with it..........Beautiful photo!
Bruce and Mary...
And it saves a lot of money on gas! ;)
Steve H...
Sometimes we forget why we moved there in the first place. Thanks
Julie...
Thanks for the kind words. I am actually doing an experiment with my new upgraded outside blog and I will let you know what happens!
Richard...I know people who vacation all over the world, and when I ask them about something in our own area, they had no idea it was there!
Hi Richard! Great post! You are right when you said "we often overlook the scenic treasures closest to home." Another wonderful photo... makes me reflect... LOL
I had to come back when I saw this quote on my United Country Website today - How appropriate
A person travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.
George Moore
Richard, how apropos! I was just talking with a friend who attended the inauguration. He was somewhat diappointed in that he didn't see all that he wanted to. I was home, cozy and warm and saw great shots! Being a Cancer, I love being home...so the idea that I can take shots right around here and share them with friends is a great idea! Now, if I just had your talent........
Richard....indeed there are so many fun day or even half-day trips you can do around Atlanta and check out things. I've never been to Kennesaw Battlefield! And I've never been to the top of Stone Mountain!
We do so often overlook what's in our own back yard!
Richard,
You are such a talented photographer. I know I am technically challenged but would you share how you put your name on your photos?
Often we're so busy with the day to day hustle we forget about the beauty all around us. I know I've been guilty of that as well... then again I've taken some of my favorite pictures within a few minutes walking distance of my backyard!
Its not until someone is coming to visit that we take in the great sights that surround us. It used to be that way when I lived in Jamaica too. You take things for granted when you can get to them anytime.
As our areas grow and we begin to lose some of our history it would be nice to have some documentation along with the photos.
Richard,
Awesome shot as usual! I love this one. It looks like Alley Springs here in Missouri.
Ann Hayden glad to be home in Wildwood, Missouri
What a great photo of an old mill. Finding little treasures like this one is easy and all over the nation. Such history and beauty.
Oh my Richard, did that photo of Starrs Mill bring back some beautiful memories. I used to live north of there in Fayetteville.
