I have spent the last two days bringing my Dell Inspiron back to life after a catastrophic crash. It has been an uphill battle. I tried a lot of fixes that failed miserably, leaving me the only option left ... to start all over again from scratch.
It took nearly a full day just to get back on the Internet again. That is so essential for getting the correct patched and fixes. After that, hours and hours of updates had to be performed.
I am still not able to get my Outlook to function. It keeps saying that it's not installed, even though I have uninstalled and reinstalled it many times. I cannot add any email accounts and of course, all of my contacts are gone! That will take forever to reconstruct.
I am still searching for all of my software disks. I have so many programs that I use on a daily basis and it's so hard to work without them. I promise that this time, I will put them all in one place!
It's really true, you don't know what you've got till it's gone ... and for now ...I'll spend every waking moment trying to get my computing life back together!
Note: I posted this with the Dell Inspiron, so that's REAL progress!

Especially a computer you use for work!!! I know how much fun it is to try to get everything back, or at least as much as you can. Good luck with your computer and best of luck in '09.
Been there. Done it. What do/did I do.
Make the best of everything. Yes I lost a bunch. Reformat the hard drive. It is the only way to get back up to operating standards. If you do not have the dell disks find a copy of widows and reinstall. You should have the serial key on the bottom of the system.
Suscribe to a system that will do a automatic backup. I use LiveCare. Buy a backup drive. You can get a terebit for a hundred bucks. Also you might want to park real important files on the cloud so you can access from anywhere.
Good luck
Tony
Outlook is a powerful tool, but when you go through a crash like you did it can leave you disabled without it. I had to switch to a web based service that I can access from any computer. I use google, but Outlook has an online version you might want to try for the future. Good Luck.
TRUTH,TRUTH<TRUTH---If you want to know how much something or someone means to you do with out it for a week.

And every setting needs to be changed .. thanks for the best wishes!

Would you believe that I accidentally dropped my external back up drive 3 weeks ago and it broke? Oh wow, talk about bad timing!
CLR...
I have been thinking about doing just what you have suggested! THX
You have my sympathies. I suffered a massive virus attack about 6 weeks ago and had go back to a stripped hard drive. This with a anti-virus, firewall and never open attachments.
So, I'm back running fine.
So, today I decided to vacume and dust behind my computer table and unravel some of the spaghetti hanging around. It took ma 4 hours to figure out that the plug for my monitor was loose.
I'd say you're making big strides! Hopefully you'll get your computer back up and fully running soon!
Richard... I have been there and it's no fun whatsoever. Our server went down last summer and it took forever t get us back up and running. That you have 'net access again is a blessing... now, recreating your contacts... good luck my friend. I was reading CLR's comment about an online Outlook...I didn't know they had one... I'll have to check that out.
Richard,
I feel your pain here. I'm sure you're making plans to mitigate your losses for when this happens again sometime in the future.

That's true with anything ... water, cable TV, cell phones! We need them all!

As long as I can get on AR, it's good to go!
Well, I would have given up and started over with a new one. I am not tech savvy enough to tackle the job you are working on!
I'm pretty sure I told you I stopped using Outlook for anything a long time ago, one of the reasons being for what you just experienced. I'd rather lose a day of mail then a whole collection of it.
Additionally my last uber laptop didnt do the job, just like yours isnt right now either. You know I build or go through computers yearly and it hasnt been one year w/o that. My current laptop is a T61 and going on 1yr old. The ease of reformatting back to Factory settings is EASY PEAZY! It has this nifty button called "ThinkVantage" from IBM days and does autorestore from backup!!
I've already reformatted a couple times this year with no problems, other than that I wish I would have bought a bigger base HD so that I could backup more. You'll want to look at the T series, mine would be the T400(the current equivilent) and get it with Discrete Graphics and at least 2gigs of ram and 1gig of flash ram on the HD to help speed things up on that end too.
FYI, since I'm going back for my Masters starting in 2wks I'll be free to do whatever again...meaning my mom wants me active in real estate, even if its just helping you out with showings on the weekend!
Talk to you soon,
Jason K.
Richard, Had my computer guy here last week. Luckily it only needed some clean up! My husband bought the western digital external hard drive to back everything up but had some difficulty with that..LOL but I am determined to get it all backed up before 2009. Good luck.
Hi Richard. Sorry for your loss.
Sounds like a huge pain in the butt!
I just bought a hard drive to back up the contact list. Quite a relief.
Good luck,
Ken
How frustrating. The upside is, next time you will have taken all the proper steps so it won't be a catastrophy IF it happens again.
A few months ago the Internet went down in our office, and everyone was in a huge panic. Think about being stuck with no cell phone these days.
Oh man, that totally whomps. I'm glad you're back on-line. So sorry to hear about the crash.
Jesse...
You can actually host Outlook on a server via Microsoft Exchange services ... and can provide access to multiple users. It's a ton cheaper than a lot of other contact managers!
Rich...
I had a backup that backfired! Go figure.
Bill...
Money is a little tight right now!
What's up Jason?
I'm due for a new laptop but finds are tight right now. I need a humongous drive to hold all of the photos, and I also need to redo my commercial sites as revenues are down!
I has a 750GB external that I dropped and broke ... with all of my backup data on it!
Congrats on going back to school! That will help you in the long run!
Barb...
I tried that, and I broke the external drive ... that's two hundred bucks I'll never see again! THX
Ken...
I guess I'm going to have to buy another one and try again! THX
Tony and Libby...
Backup is critical! Funny thing is, I had all of the websites backed up to THIS computer!
Richard, you might want to contact David Fox. I have not worked with him, but Margaret Woda swears by him. My DVD/CDROM is not working, and I've been told the ONLY way it can be repaired is to box up my laptop (Gateway) and mail it to them. Now what the heck am I suppose to do without my computer?
David told me he could get the part, and walk me through changing it. I need to get that done, and will give him a call.
I've got everything EXCEPT Outlook backed up via Carbonite. I do have my calendar and contacts backed up on my Blackberry, so I have a backup if I have a crash.
It's one of those things we don't plan for till it's to late!
Hope you get it all back up soon!
Just went through the same thing on my laptop! I had a pro retrieve all the data but can't seem to make it work with my restored Outlook!
Wow. That is really weird. I've never encountered that one. Is there any info about it on the Microsoft message boards? My daughters' computer suddenly stopped running Firefox, but I'm pretty sure it's a stupid Vista error.
It does make us appreciate it more and plan on backing up more.
Richard,
What did we ever do without these darn things called computers?
Thanks to your post, I decided it was time to take a look at my own PC, which had been acting a little funny lately...(Inspiron 600m). At my husband's suggestion, I downloaded RegCure and found I had quite a mess on my hands! It took most of Sunday, but I think I'm in much better shape, have all the latest updates and am running much faster.
So, thank you for inspiring me to do all that!
It is such a pain! I feel for you. One of the times it happened to me I took it to a shop. They were able to get all of my data on a portable drive. The cost was around $300.
Richard: I can't imagine losing all my contacts. I actually started using my companies remote version of Outlook. I figure they HAVE to have back ups with back ups that have back ups. With over 14,000 agents using their systems, and storing their contacts, I decided the odds are better than I won't lose anything if I use their systems.
Hi Richard:
As much as you think you have a back-up plan, you never know when it all goes up in smoke.
And how much time has it taken to recover so far?
Richard,
For about $50 a year you can subscribe to Carbonite and have your files in your main drive automatically backed up - this includes music, photos, data, and Outlook - and it does work. :)
