Well, I have seen it happen to others, but this is a first for me. My trusty Dell Inspiron had an "episode" as I was trying to get my work done for tomorrow. Now that I finally have some business, I have to deal with tech issues.
Initial recovery efforts failed. So I have been able to get back some functionality and I have reloaded Windows, but I can't seem to connect to the Internet to get the necessary updates to make it work.
Also, I'm going to have to load all of my programs again. What a pain. I guess the good news is that I don't seem to have lost any data. That, at least is a consolation. But I won't be able to do much of anything properly until I finish the repair.
And what's in store for the next two days? Trying to put back together the pieces of my cyber life!

Richard, your experience is deja vu of what happened to me about a year ago on another laptop. Crashes they say are not if but when. Sorry man!!
Hi Richard! OH, my heart hurts for you! I have had a couple of mini-crashes and it just seems to ruin your day--and, like you said, it seems to come at the WORST of times! Best of luck getting your cyber life back together...perhaps someone here in the RAIN knows a 'quick' fix for you?
I have had numerous crashes...my dell went through 4 system restores. The last one was the worse, I had finally updated all my files for it to crash. Now the screen broke after putting everything back into it.
Then I get a Gateway and less than 8 months into the purchase, this one crashs and has to be sent back where they wiped it clean....
Word to the wise....external hard drive....back it up.....everything up. They have programs out there where you can back up on line....its worth it....
Not going thru this again.....I feel for you!!
My husband just finished reloading his server and gaming machine. He's at his game again!
Gary...
I haven't been able to do much of anything ... I'm on an old clunker desktop now but I need my mail! Thanks. my friend.
Debe ...
Thanks, my first quick fix led to the famous blue screen! If I can get it on the Internet somehow, I can get the updates I need . Thanks.
Nancy...
About two weeks before Christmas I grabbed my laptop without unplugging the external drive and when I yanked it, it fell and crashed. Oh wow, I'm not so lucky these days!
I hate it when that happens Richard! Never a good time for me!
Hello Richard,
I'm sorry to hear that. I recently had a problem with a Spyware. Let me tell you...It is not funny. It is like an invasion. I used spybot and it helped. Thanks!
Jenny
OUCH! Get well soon!
Oh boy that is a major pain in the butt! Hopefully it all goes well for you.
Sally...
You've got to have priorities! Thanks.
Tami...
I'm lucky I have this back-up computer but none of my good programs are on it! But at least I can get on AR!
Jenny...
I wish we could sue these malcontents that ruin our computers, It makes me mad.
Richard, I do feel your PAIN!! Been there done that; quite a few times. Luckily my husband is very tech savvy so he deals with it but it is never a pretty picture. It seems like every time it happens I end up losing some information. We now have carbnoite for just that reason. Hopefully we won't have to test it out any time soon though.
ouch.... Knock on wood my computer has been fearless. Oh gosh maybe I just jinxed myself. Dang it. I try to remember to back up all my data. I just hope I have been as efficient as I think I am! that's a bummer Richard - I hope you get it all up and running soon!
Bummer - I had to have that happen only once.........now I have 2 laptops and a desktop....and a stick to move things around.........:-) Hope you had a great Christmas Richard..............and that the New Year brings you blessings galore!
Mara...
Thanks my friend!
Monika...
It has increased my stress level, that's for sure!
Patricia..
You are SO right about that!
A couple of years ago our local REALTOR association was selling off PC's from the training center very cheaply, $50.00 perPC, each with some memory sticks, keyboards, monitors, fully licensed copies of Windows XP, etc. I bought two of them and installed hard drives and new fan motors in each. Now I keep both desktops and a laptop in tip top shape and keep lots of back ups on cd's and flash drives. Gives me a GREAT feeling!
If you need help give me a call. I am very good with Windows and am sure I can get yours up and running. I would be happy to walk you through whatever you need.
Beyond that if you do get it running how you like and fully updated you might want to check into making an image of your PC how you like it using Norton Ghost or something similar. Basically you can just pop in the image and be back up and running in no time rather than reloading everything.
I feel your pain. Hope you are back up and running as soon as possible.
Arrrrgh! That really stinks Richard. You have reminded me to back up my hard drive.
The only thing that is worse is when you format the hard drive only to discover you also formatted your backup drive by mistake. Ouch!
Richard...I went through this June of this year. and last year also. The difference is that you know what you are doing! Although that is not much consolation!
I back EVERYTHING up on an external hard drive. My household is computer dependant... so we cannot afford to have a crash!! I wish you luck!!
Richard, sorry to hear about your computer troubles. Glad to see you were able to make it back online.
I am so sorry for you! It is never easy when dealing with computer issues.
My computer has been slooooooooooooooooooow the past few weeks. Unbearably slooooooooooooooooow, so slooooooooooooow in fact that I have had little patience to work on it!
I will be addressing my problem this week.
Good luck to you!
Bummer. I've had this happen too many times. I now backup ALL my data to an external hard drive, and keep my laptop and desktop synchronized. I just had to reformat the hard drive on my laptop a couple of weeks ago. But if it's any consolation, I've done this so many times over the years, it gets faster and easier every time. This last time only took a few hours to format, reload and reinstall and copy everything back to my laptop. My desktop does take longer though, since I do most of my work on it. And 2 days might still be the standard for this one.
Richard, get a better computer. Apple, high end fujitsu or a high end Lenovo thinkpad. I trust no other brands at all. I used to trust dell before 2003.
Richard: Computer crashes are the worst! They make you feel so helpless. And you will truly appreciate why one particular computer crash had me in tears. I lost every one of my photos. I had beautiful shots of my two babies (Rudy & Minx) from when they were kittens. Family and friends. All gone! Luckily, my husband had some on a separate drive that survived. Nowadays, we back up our work data, financial info and photos.
The same thing happened to me with exactly the same computer. I am not blaming Dell because it could happen to anyone of them. It took about 17 hrs to update everything. I am glad you didn't lose your files. Once I got past that fear it was just a matter of waiting.
Some times I think computers are simply waiting for a bad time so they can crash.
I lost everything today. I guess I better find a back up.
While performing a recommended Critical Update to Windows XP, my desk PC hung at the end of the initialization/download/installation process and would not reboot.Error Windows file missing or corrupt. Spent about 3 hours trying to replace the missing or corrupted file, all to no avail. Drove home, cloned a good backup in a 25 minute process, reinstalled hard drive, yippeeEE all is well again.
