I guess I was the only person in the country that did not know that the moon would simultaneously be full and at perigee (Nearest point of orbit) on December 12.
So there I was, driving down the main drag, Bullsboro Drive when the ascending moon suddenly appeared before me on the highway. I was totally unprepared, but had the camera at the ready.
I pulled at the camera at a stop light and the guy next to me started honking on the horn. I thought that he was going to cuss me out, but instead he hollered: "Have you EVER seen anything so amazing?"
The shot was handheld, and is has not been modified in any way. The golden moon rose magnificently above the road. It was indeed, as the gentleman so succinctly stated, AMAZING!

That moon was amazing even in New Jersey! Again, me without a camera...great photo Richard!
Amazing is absolutely right on Richard, thanks for sharing. I don't know many people who know so much about perigee and apogee so I'm gonna venture a guess that you are a sailor/boater of some degree. If so that would make two of us and I'm all ready to get back out on the water, by the way, where were these gas prices all summer? :)
Hi RW - You weren't the only one. I noticed the moon on my way home and then heard about it afterwards so don't feel badly. Great picture! KM
Great Shot Richard...I seen the full moon that day but not at this time of day.
Laura...
You need to keep that camera with you! Thanks for the comment!
Kevin...
Not a sailor, but an amateur astronomer! I used to do quite a bit of star-gazing, but not so much these days! Thanks for the comment!
Kristin...
It was a sight to see, that's for sure! Thanks, my friend!
We tried to get a shot of the Moon and it was so cloudy we haven't seen it for a week or more Great photo.
Thanks for sharing that great picture! It was absolutely amazing...
How is the housing market in Georgia? I have a home in Dawsonville and was thinking of listing it being that the Sembler Project will be taking place right across the street. What's your thought on that? My property is residential w/ 2 acres, 4 bed, 2 1/2 bath, 2 car. It's already zoned Commercial Highway Business Residential.
Next time I'm down in Georgia I will have to check out Newman. I lived in Dawsonville for about 4 years and really only went ot the Stadium, Underground, Coke, etc. I still have cousins living in Lawrenceville. Georgia is a beautiful place. If we don't sell our home, we will retire there when our kids go off to college.
Thanks again for sharing your spectacular picture with us. I truly miss Georgia's sky full of stars. They always seemed so close.
Should I have any referrals to give in Georgia, I will send them your way. Please do the same here. I cover Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Salem, Ocean, Cumberland, and Cape May Counties. Mostly all of Southern New Jersey. I know it well.
Take care, jane
I saw it right after 5 when I was leaving my office and planned to take photos when I got home, but it was still behind the trees, when it got above them the "show" was over. I'm glad I got to see your magnificent shot.
Hi Richard. I am glad you can appreciate such things.
You certainly "smell the roses".
Good for you.
Ken
Bill...
First, it was something to see!

I just had this urge to climb on a mountain and start howling at the moon.....wow!
Hey Richard,
What a great shot! Should be a painting...hint hint.
Ann Hayden in Wildwood, Missouri
We're too cloudy tonight to see the moon, but that's a great shot... as always!
Richard,
Missed the event myself, but you captured is beautifully. I like taking moon shots but as you know are quite tricky because of the lighting. :)
Steve
Richard, what an incredible picture! You always post such great pictures that you've taken yourself. It was raining here so we didn't see it. Merry Christmas!
I didn't get a picture of it, but I did get a good look at it. Amazing!
And I thought I had the biggest moon! ;-O) Great picture!
Hi Richard - Looks like you painted that one on your photo! It's gorgeous. I was hoping to see the bright lights at that time - on the 10th I think, but we had snow and clouds, no starts or moon to be seen! This photo is just priceless!
Tammy...
I just looked and it was there! Truly amazing!
Ken...
i love the beauty the world has to offer!
Sally...
It was truly something to see!
The best shots are unplanned, eh? I cannot believe how gorgeous it came out.
Richard,
Fantastic photo. That samr night I was leaving Philips arena and it was beautiful moon that just looked like it was perched on top og the Atlanta skyscrpers. Alas, no camera. After that I have kept it in the car with me.
Richard, it was indeed amazing. I remember the big deal back at the time.
I just posted in the Astronomy channel, so I saw your old article and had to stop by. Great photo!
And glad the guy at the light was not angry, but enjoying it as well.
