Newnan Georgia does not enjoy the status of being subtropical!. It is, however, located in the Deep South, and the weather can change dramatically overnight!
If the winds blow from the North at the behest of the jet stream, Old Man Winter sends frigid temperatures and frosty mornings. However, if the winds blow from the south and the Gulf of Mexico, then warm and pleasant weather results.
Friday night in Newnan was one of those warm, balmy nights. Although less than a week from Christmas, the crowd that had gathered for music and shopping enjoyed the luxury of leaving their coats and jackets at home!
Newnan Georgia is one of those classic old downtown areas that still does extensive holiday decorating, and it's a beautiful spot for a December stroll. To be able to do so in one's shirtsleeves is a rare treat, although it doesn't feel very Christmassy to a man raised in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania! Hopefully the weather will cool off by Christmas Day!
If you happen to be in the Atlanta area during the holidays, don't miss a trip to Newnan Georgia after dark! You'll be pleasantly surprised and pleased by the Christmas card appearance and you will be taken back to a simpler time when communities publicly celebrated the spirit of the season!

Hi Richard,
Have you received any snow lately!! We are getting ready to have a BLAST OF SNOW here in Atlantic Canada.... Happy Holidays!!!
;>)
Hi Richard, We have been having warm balmy weather here the past few days. That could change by Christmas day. Newnan sounds like a beautiful place at Christmas and any time of the year.
In my 49 Christmas Days in Atlanta I think I have seen snow twice and on the ground once. This year, like most others, looks to be headed for cold and wet but that's just home for me.
Looks like you had a great time! Your lucky you had a warm night, we got freezy rain.
Ann-Marie...
We had a few flurries in November ... also very unusual for here! I can only remember one significant snowfall here ( in 35 years ) that occurred before Christmas. Most happen in January and February!
Shirley...
I hope it does turn cold, because I like a fire in the fireplace for Christmas dinner. What's cool about Newnan ids that downtown was PACKED last night ... a small town surviving in a big city world!
Nice photo. How about some more.
Nice post about a home town - great idea
Richard - Wait...you were born in Pittsburgh? That explains everything. We PA types tend to gravitate towards each other. I grew up the other side, but have lived in Pittsbugh too (some of my family still lives there). You read a blog, you learn something new.
Ken...
I have a photo of a Christmas Eve snowfall that I will locate and post before the holiday! Thanks for the validation! Speaking of weather in Atlanta, are you kin to the famed Atlanta weather-caster of the same name?
Carol...
As a native Pennsylvanian, I have to admit that I had to look up Bucks County to see where it is ... I'm from Western PA so I have never visited your area, looks like you're not too far from New York City.
Richard, I don't know if I could get used to Christmas in a warm area, but I'd love to see the decorations!
It's been in the 70's here all week. I think it may be time to break my Christmas shorts.
Kenneth...
More are on the way!
Steve...
It's a nice place all right!
Matt...
I was born and raised in the "Point Breeze" neighborhood and went to School in Homewood. When I was ten, we moved to Ross Township in the North Hills! We did quite a bit of "Rockin'" in the'Burgh!
Susan...
I will NEVER get used to it! I love cold and snow at Christmas, forcing you to stay inside by a warm fire and drinking good wine and tasty hor dourves! Christmas is supposed to be a time to snuggle!
JL...
The ones with Santa on the surfboard?
HI RW - I still feel it "feels" like Christmas even without a jacket. It was 78 degrees here yesterday but supposed to be down to 20 on Monday. I'll believe it when I see feel it. KM
JL, let's not encourage Richard to break the shorts out again!! Can't say why in a public post!
Richard it looks so great there! It is fantastic to imagine Chirstmas still exists the way it was years ago in small towns. It is worth the trip. Merry Christmas!
Kristin...
Texas is a LOT like GA, if you don't like the weather, stay a day or two and it will change. I think we're supposed to be cold by Christmas Day too!
Susan...
Public Smublic! My reputation precedes me everywhere!
Jim...
We are hanging on to the old ways as long as we can! And a very Merry Christmas to you, my friend!
I'm going home to Pennsylvania over Christmas. I'm hoping they get some snow.
I'm from the east part of the state where they drink soda and use rubberbands, not pop and gum bands. :)
Tim...
OK, so you must have lived in Pittsburgh at one point to know THAT! The first time my wife went to Pittsburgh (she's a southern belle) and my uncle asked her if she wanted a "pop" she nearly jumped out of the chair!
Richard, Wonderful pictures. Can't remember a Christmas in short sleeves here in Cleveland!
Richard, it was 77 degrees in Nashville yesterday and today?....40 the high. Ridiculous!. But is is Christmas nonetheless and I will take that anyway I can get it!
Bo
btw, I will be in Atlanta the first week of the year.
Warm weather sounds great to me! Hey, Richard, is that your date (the little sparkly snow man??) Any way thanks for the great pix!
Hi Richard, I can almost feel the balmy breeze.. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Thank for the pics!
Hi Richard! Loved the pictures, who was your friend there in the Mistle Toe Express?? Yes Nashville, is much like the Atlanta area and this year has really been unusual. Air conditioning yesterday and gloves today. Snow for Christmas would be great! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Richard ~ It looks lovely! Glad you were feeling up to a stroll so that we could see your pictures! I lived in Georgia for 5 years and remember that some years a coat was required at Christmastime and some years we were playing on Christmas morning in shorts and tee shirts! I've got your cold weather now though - snow on the ground and highs in the low 20's. ~A:)
Sounds like you folks took my warm weather. Love the pictures Richard.
Richard, thanks for sharing Newnan, Georgia with us! Merry Christmas!
Richard: I love the photos you share of your town at Christmas. It really does seem like something other-worldly to someone who lives in the metropolis outside of DC where everything looks the same no matter what town you're in.
Newnan looks a bit bigger than little ole' Eatonton, but I think our temps must be very similar. I've enjoyed not running the heater or the air, just being comfortable. Really beautiful photos. I enjoy that Eatonton is post card like after dark this time of year also.
Barb...
Nor should you! lol When that wind blows off of lake Erie ...LOOK OUT! Merry Christmas.
Bo...
Give me a holler, and maybe we can meet! Have a great Christmas!
Laura G...
Thanks...BTW I sent you an interesting email! lol
Mary...
And thank you for your careful attention to detail! ;)
Connie...
Why thank you! This was one of those rare occasions where I actually placed my camera in someone else's hands and I'm glad I did! Merry Christmas to you!
Alisha...
It looks like a cold front is on the way now! You are right, here in GA ANYTHING can happen. Merry Christmas!
Ya, Up here in da Nort we watch our Holly Dazzell Parade in short sleeves, tha is unless the weader turns cold...under 30 degrees or so, then we need a long sleeve shirt!
I have got to get down to your area one of these days!
Hey Yall,

Fast Eddie has been here too... Geez.
Richard, I love the old downtowns as you know... that's one thing I miss about the south that we just don't have here.... Btw, I like the shot of you on the train.. but shouldn't you be at the helm? Merry Christmas!
Cameron...
Thanks...but we have a cold front moving in tomorrow! Thanks my friend.
Tony...
You're welcome, it's a neat place!
Chris Ann...
Did I ever mention that i had a sister that lives in Kensington? I don't think I did. She's an artist and I really should do a Localism post about her! THX
Look at you on the Mistletoe Express!! I love this picture - you look soooo happy.
