As we approach the winter solstice, and we absorb the fact that the calendar is waning down to nothing, it is time to both reflect on the year past and to plan ahead for the new year ahead.
And although there are early signs that the storm is calming, there is yet plenty of rough weather lying before us. As a defense against the raging market elements, some will seek the warmer climes of the steady paycheck. Others will take refuge in other pursuits.
But those that remain and weather the storm will emerge stronger, more confident and more defiant. And consider this:
This is the worst market cataclysm in recent history. After this, everything will seem easy. We will, at some point in the future, be relaying the stories of the great real estate market collapse with the zeal of old sailors spinning yarns, as we admonish the young ones about just how bad things could be!
The survivors that live to tell the tale will have one heck of a story!

Richard,
Sounds a lot like that saying "eat a frog first thing in the morning and nothing will be as bad the rest of the day." There is going to be a lot of collateral damage before we get to tell the tall tales.
Richard
"This is the worst market cataclysm in recent history. After this, everything will seem easy."
Indeed. And all we have to do is hold out. The only question is, how long can the average agent do so? I'm really surprised that the agents and brokers in my network are still in business.
Surprised and pleased, of course.
The Florida market will take years to recover, but rentals and foreclosure sales can still put ham on the table! Merry Christmas!
Okay, well, I am ready for the easy part. Any time. ;-)
Richard,
It is odd for me that our area took over a year after every place elsewhere to have a visible slow down inour market and we appear to be headed back into more normal territory (for my firm) but our numbers may be increasing as there are fewer Realtors and fewer builders in the business.
I have been saying this for quite some time now...albeit not a eloquently as you just have. I love black and whites and I think this is my favorite picture of yours so far!
As with most, I am looking forward to the upswing - thanks for the elegently written post!
I'm with Susan H., I am ready for the easy part! You are a wonderful writer and I love the photo. xxoo
Rich...
Exactly, very well put!
Lenn...
I ask myself THAT question every day. How long can I hold out?
Darin...
Where the heck have you been? You have been missed.
Richard - what's a steady paycheck compared to the adventure we are on right now? Love that contrast on you photo.
Is this us? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97RSuv8hroc
I fully plan to survive most anything that gets thrown my way, much less our current market situation. However, I will be glad when I get to talk about all of this in past tense.
Richard: Failure is not an option for me! I love this job! I can't imagine doing anything else. So I will ride this bucking bronco until it calms down. And I'll probably miss the many ups and downs when we are in more stable times.
I agree it is just figuring out a way to survive the storm.
Richard, I do hope people can ride this one out....it's going to be bumpy but those who stay will be true survivors--and still LOVE their chosen profession.
Susan H...
We are ready, we are REALLY ready! THX
Julie...
I think that you have hit the nail on the head for your area! ;)
Mandi..
This is an older photo, maybe 20 years or more, of the beautiful western Pennsylvania countryside!
it will be like Grandpa telling the grandkids a big tale. They won't believe us. We will survive!
Bridget...
You are welcome, I think that we need to get through this together!
Susan...
Thanks my dear, I am really fond of that photo! I get chills every time I see it ;)
Big Mike...
It has been interesting, that's for sure. And I love to slip in old photos!
Richard, I don't know how the prognosticators can call this the worst when they don't know the future.
A while back anyone could succeed in real estate. While it is more challenging now, those the listen, learn and keep at it will succeed.
Mel...
At least we're enjoying the ride!
JL...
You have many years left to recount the "bad old days!"
Chris Ann...
Well I knew that YOU were a fighter!
For some reason that pic reminds me of Ralphie and his incident with Scott Farcus
Richard,
Weather the storm....funny you should put it like that. We have ice here today. Stuck at home all day with the whole family... We had a great day together. Life is always throwing us curves to see if we are paying attention....;-)
Ann
I just had a very seasoned agent tell me that when he got into Real Estate everyone told him how terrible the market was...but he didn't know what terrible meant because all he knew was what currently faced him...34 years later he's a successful as they can be!
I am all in Richard........
Thanks
Bo
Richard,
I'm in it to win it. This ain't no part time gig for me. I'm really appreciating the referral part of my business right about now.
I can hardly wait to be an old sailor! LOL
I will hold your advice in my heart, dear friend. The best is yet to come, but it will get worse before it gets better.
Richard,
I just love this line you wrote:
But those that remain and weather the storm will emerge stronger, more confident and more defiant
It's so true and fitting...
as always thanks for sharing...
