There's something about trains! A collage of train photos for enthusiasts everywhere!

CSX Locomotive 125The serpent slides ‘cross gleaming steel
Shrill shrieks emit as flange grinds rail,
The sinewy procession traipses,
Meanders burgeoning with freight!

There is an intrinsic aura surrounding trains and railroads in general. Perhaps it's something about the two parallel rails leading off into infinity that captures the imagination.

Or is it the cacophony of sounds and sensations that accompany the passing of a locomotive and rolling stock that make them seem alive?

Trains are a part of Americana, and since they move more freight on less fuel than any other mode of land transportation, they are "green" as well, and good for both the economy and the environment!

Hi Richard, shall we talk about your fascination with trains?  I'll bet if Thomas The Tank Engine was around when you were a kid, you would have been crazy about him!

Richard - My 8-yr-old is total train boy, well and now also a Star Wars "nut". I have to dig up our trian photos. We have visited the local train museum quite many times. ~Rita

My wife is taking the train to Chicago tomorrow to see our grandson. It is still a great way to travel.

Hi Richard... as usual, great pictures.  Trains just always seem to capture the imagination and fascinate people all year, but especially at holiday time when we seem to see many model train displays.  Thanks for sharing!

Susan...

As a kid, I was crazy about anything to do with a train! I got one every year for Christmas, and I still think that they're a big part of the holidays! I was a scale modeler too, but I haven't worked on them in years! Sorry I missed you today, my schedule was goofy!

Rita...

There's just something about them that is fascinating! I hope that your son does NOT grow out of it!

Susan, funny you should mention Thomas. My boys are both crazy about him and they love Richard's photographs. :-)

Love the train photo's Richard.  I unpacked a print by a local artist of the Alaska Railroad this afternoon that I plan to hang in my home office.

Richard - trains hold the same fascination for me as campfires, I can sit and watch them contemplating life or nothing at all. Although, I will admit, in 2002 I took a bit of time and did a cross country trip. Many of the trains I saw, especially through the Green River area of Wyoming, much of the freight was military: trucks, tanks, humvees, etc. That did not bring peaceful contemplation.

Richard, My wife dragged me out to a big nursery last night to see the Christmas display. While all the women were oohing and ahhing over the decorations, all the guys and kids were in front of the huge train display. I still have my Lionel set from when I was a kid.

Richard,

There is something about trains. Our towns grew up around them. They used to be important for passenger transportation (now primarily just for commuting). What child hasn't wanted a trianset at least once? :)

I love traveling by train ... you see things that you would never see otherwise!

Carolyn...

Thanks, I'm getting a little better about "playing nice and sharing!" lol

Steve S...

When I grew up the Pittsburgh, the Buhl Planetarium has a HUGE Christmas train display every holiday season, and the place was packed!

Big Mike...

Now that you mention it, I have seen a lot more trains with miliarty cargo lately, it's a sign of the times, I guess.

I've only taken one train ride in my life, but I think it would be a lot of fun to take another now that I am old enough to appreciate it.

Rich...

If you put up a running train, people will watch. We have a barbecue place in Griffin that runs a train around the whole restaurant kust under the ceiling and it;s fascinating!

Steve...

I know that I got one almost every year!

JL...

It's a great way to see "different" places other than the sides of the Interstate.
