As Shakespeare's Hamlet pondered the meaning of life, he carefully observed that all that is beautiful and exquisite could easily be contrived as something distasteful and unclean.
This most excellent canopy, the air, look you, this brave o'erhanging firmament, this majestical roof fretted with golden fire, why, it appears no other thing to me than a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours. (William Shakespeare, Hamlet)
The fact is that Hamlet was disturbed and suicidal. And the only way that he could devalue his own existence was to tear down all that was good and pleasing around him.
And if we are not careful, we just might fall into the same pit of despair and exasperation as Lord Hamlet. Do we try to alleviate our own failure to perform our daily responsibilities by painting the market as a hopeless and despicable ogre that will consume us and all like us?
It would be very easy to give up at this point. But the human spirit motivates us towards self-preservation. It is time to rise up and take positive action.
So now is the time to be constructing and not dismantling. Our world is what we make it, and we have the ultimate control of our own destinies.
Where there is change, there is opportunity. Where treasure is lost, there is more yet to be uncovered. I choose to relish challenge and face obstacles head-on. I'm not just a survivor, I am a conqueror!

Don't give up!
Hey Richard, I have always admired your photos and have wondered how you put those nice borders around them. I figured it out yesterday.
Marlene...
Actually, once you set the border you can edit the code in the box for style and color, so you can let your imagination run wild!
Richard - Extremely well written. I prefer your writing to most authors! :) On a side not I posted a little video yesterday about not giving up. Don't miss it. Its priceless.
Quoting Shakespeare in the morning will certainly get my attention. Tying it into a post, genius! You are right, we should stay positive about what we are doing and not blame circumstance. We are in control of our own business.
I forgot to mention, the pictures are breathtaking.
Steve...
I have subscibed to you blog but there were so many MeMes yesterday that I could not keep up! I promise that I will check it out today! Thanks for your continued support!
Mel...
As you know so well ;) And thanks ... I wanted to make sure this post got noticed!
The quote certainly got my creative juices flowing early this morning. I think it is a great way to start the day.
Mel...
Apparently, you are one of the few! lol. I thought the title would get more attention!
Ah! You've outdone yourself! Fantastic post, Richard!
I on the other hand RW had to look up that Q word. Quintessence- is a hypothetical form of dark energy postulated as an explanation of observations. Love the wiki & now love this post (after it made more sense to me) ;0.
There are plenty that are creating their own doom & gloom. I choose to slightly ignore, slightly pay attention. It's working for me so @ this point whatever works, works. KM
*I just edited myself...
You are just spoiled rotten, aren't you? That's ok, you have earned it.
Your photos are amazing! Thanks for the blog.
Marie...
Thanks. I just wonder how far Shakespeare can take you with real estate agents? lol
Kristin...
That has always been one of my favorite words. I just thought that too many of us might be falling into the Hamlet trap! I think I'll read the whole play again!
Mel...
Well, you are an enabler! ;)
Betina...
I am really try to excel right now! Thanks for your frequent nice comments!
Good morning, Richard. What a grand way to start my day! You have outdone yourself. This earns a spot on the wall. It is one of the most uplifting columns I've read in quite sometime. Eloquent, beautiful and resplendent in its message. Positivity is all I can focus on at this point. I am a realist, but can't watch televised news anymore because of the negativity. I will start my day with this for quite a while! Thank you!
Richard, some REALTORS I've known for years are just so negative now I find my self avoiding them at all costs. Life, whether work or play, is what we make it! Thanks for the reminder!
Suzanne...
Now you are just embarrassing me! (Blush) I'm trying to remember what triggered this post this morning. Maybe it was all of the book MeMe's but whatever it was, it just sort of flowed out rather nicely. I try to write with my readers in mind, so I'm glad you found the article inspirational!
The problem is, now I have to "top" it at some point! lol
Richard, What a fantastic tie in to Shakespeare. We are all writing our future scripts. The subject is the same but the stories will be very different.
There are so many ways to get the successful waterfall shots that you have posted. Alas, all of them have continued to elude me.
A conqueror, I thought you were an enforcer? Head on is the only way I see fit to face a challenge.
Rich...
Excellent way to put that into words! About the photos: I'm going to do a post about that ...soon.
JL...
I guess it's possible to be both a conqueror and an enforcer?
RW - Not a problem! You will continue to inspire me each morning and for that I'm eternally grateful.
This most excellent canopy, the air, look you, this brave o'erhanging firmament, this majestical roof fretted with golden fire, why, it appears no other thing to me than a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours. (William Shakespeare, Hamlet)
Richard, this took me waaay back... all the way back to one of the original Rock Operas: Hair (which I saw twice with my girlfriend at the time).
What a piece of work is man
With everything seamingly falling apart, now is the time to build!!
Beautiful, uplifting and inspiring. I love Shakespeare! especially when it's mixed with Richard :) As always thanks! I needed that today.
Richard, what can I say? Beautiful words, beautiful pictures!
I didn't understand your explanation to Marlene about editing the code... I learned how to do the box a couple of days ago. Help???
So, now you're Richard the Conqueror? I thought you were Richard the Enforcer?
You are absolutely correct in that the world is what we make of it... there are times it's a difficult road, but we have to push on to survive. Incredible photo's!
Richard,
Your photos are the best I have ever seen. I like reading your post every day.
Edward
I was here earlier, and in my usual A.D.D. fashion, must have gotten sidetracked! Your post is timely as I have been making my little corner of the world a sad place today, feeling very sorry for my sorry amount of business. But, I will snap back tomorrow. Lovely photos. xxoo
Suzanne...
Thanks again for the kind words!
Alan...
I memorized that soliloquy many years ago! Never saw Hair, though!
Bill...
It is indeed the time for action!
Mandi...
You guys are just embarrassing me now ... but you know I love it! lol
Connie...
When you enter the picture, and go the be "border" property and enter a number, the default is black. But there is s small code box that appears at the bottom that you can modify the code. For example, change the word "black" to "red" and your border will be bright red!
Should we give Susan a little kick?
Ok, maybe a nudge?
Sure, kick me when I'm in my sad little corner. Be careful, the lion sleeps today but tomorrow, I'll be back to my feisty Italian self. I am out again tonight, no doubt racking up the points for weight watchers. Oh well, it's a sushi place, which I hate, so maybe I won't eat too much. If I'm not back to myself tomorrow, Mel, you can nudge me all you want. xxoo
The world is only as good as you make it! Thanks for such an eloquent post Richard! I can always count on your blogs to get my mind going! (And I sure need it!! *wink*) ~A:)
I'm constructing here Richard - I am constructing in the rain!! I will not let myself get depressed. You all say if I do this, it (business) will come!! I'm to busy learning the Rain to be depressed. I got a good three months before things really start picking up here in Michigan (November December January are my slowest months) and I got lots of time to get myself ranking and bringing in business. Watch out world here I come!
Richard: What lovely and peaceful photographs you've chosen for this post. I love them. Love the message too. Misery loves company. I am not that company. I want to look at the positive end of things. I have too. I love this job too much to throw my arms up in the air and give up.
Jesse...
Thanks my friend ... BTW a person can be both a conqueror AND an enforcer! lol
Edward...
Thanks, I appreciate the comment!
Susan...
I am getting a little worried, it seems that you are a bit morose!
So much to be thankful for and if we dwell on the negatives it is hard to keep a positive outlook. Thanks for the reminder.
Mel...
Yes we should ... I'm sorry I wasn't here in time to help our beloved Susan.
Susan...
Eat Sushi, and come back as your feisty self tomorrow. When you hurt, we hurt too!
Alisha...
And I thank you for your invigorating comments! That's what keeps me going!
Tami...
That is excellent thinking. Curl up in a cozy chair with a hot toddy and enjoy bonus time in the Rain! ;)
Chris Ann...
Just when I got going today, my partner wound up in surgery. Ah, destiny is strange!
Terry...
We MUST remain positive!
Richard, I'm back. I'm fine. I drank, I ate and I'm back. But, morose is really my middle name! xxoo I love you guys.
Richard, This is an excellently written post! Well done. I love the photos as well! Seems we have a mutual interest in photography - Have you joined the Wordless Wednesday group? If you haven't, please check it out! Your photos would be a most welcome addition to the group started by Rich Dansereau. I'm impressed by your posts, I will subscribe to your blog, and may I add you as an associate?
Debi
Richard,
Those are gorgeous photos... Thank you for your words of wisdom...
Ann
