Every year during the holiday season, the Newnan Hospital Auxiliary sponsors a tour of historic homes in the city of Newnan. Since Newnan has many historic homes, including some antebellum houses, the tour can be very interesting.
Two years ago, on a dark and cold December night, we visited a home on the tour reportedly haunted by a ghost named Mary. My wife and I like enjoy reading and watching television programs about paranormal activity, so we entered the house and hoped that we would have an experience of some kind.
But nothing happened, as the house was very crowded and I'm sure that any right thinking spirit would have been terrified by all of the activity. So we continued the tour until we finished looking at all of the open houses and then we started walking back to the car.
Our route back to the car took us back by "Mary's" house, and when we walked past the front steps, there was a friendly cat there. My wife and I both like cats so we stopped and petted the cat.
We turned away from the cat and then started on our way, and as we left the stoop we heard a voice behind us. We quickly turned around and the cat was gone but a 60ish looking women was standing there looking puzzled.
"What's going on here? Why are there so many people in the house?" she asked. I told her the house was on the tour of homes, and that she might want to see this one, because it reportedly had a ghost.
"Oh no, I don't like ghosts at all" she replied. She seemed agitated so we bid her good night and turned away. Worried that she might follow us, I looked back to see which direction she was heading and she was gone, and the cat was back, sitting right where the woman had been standing!
My wife and I are convinced that we met "Mary" outside the house that night. Maybe we did, maybe not, but we wonder why someone would have been out on a cold night and not have known what was going on! I'm pretty sure that we had a paranormal experience. So put us on the list of believers!

Great story. I also love stories or reports of paranormal activity. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Richard;
Great post and I thank you for sharing.................................................
Barbara...
This one was cool, and my wife insists that she was dressed in period attire but I don't recall that!
Anthony...
You're welcome.
My sister had a ghostly experience in England. She and two friends were touring Europe and seeing museums and touring old castle and manors. They took one bus tour to a beautiful English mansion belonging to a long line of royalty. On the starwell, my sister saw a beautiful woman in period costume, crying quietly and carrying a small animal that she thought was a dog or cat. When she got back to the bus she remarked that this was the first place they had toured where someone had actually dressed in costume. The other girls were disappointed that they hadn't seen anyone in costume.
One of the girls had bought a book about the place on her way out, and was thumbing through it while my sister was describing the woman and her costume. Suddenly the friend said, "Like this?" and showed her a picture in the book of the woman she had seen, in the photo she was holding a lamb. According to the book the woman had been murdered in the house in the 17th century. They asked the tour guide, who told them that what she saw was a ghost, and that a few people saw her every 6 months or so. She was jealous, because although she had been through the place many times, she had never seen her.
Are there any old folks homes in the area that she could have wandered away from?
Susan...
That's a great story and I think you should post it as a blog, because I thing a lot of people would love to read that story!
JL...
That is ALWAYS a possibility!
What a great experience! I think that would have really freaked me out for a long time afterward thogh!
In 1985 and 86 I lived in an apartment with a spirit, count me in as an I believe you.
Richard, If it was just you, or your wife, it might be harder to believe. But whey you both have the same experience simultaneously, thats reality. Over the course of my life I've had other incidents occur as well so I'm in agreement about being a believer.
Love the story, Richard! And Susan, I love your too! Of course, I am a believer and love a good story. Thanks to both of you.
It sure adds to the mystery. Any info on why she remains at the house?
Creepy and I am sure even more creepy on a dark night. Thanks for sharing.
RW,
Are you sure that you had not been hitting the sauce? If it was Mary I am sure that she is having a good laugh. I guess you can tell I am not in the believers camp yet.
I believe! I love the story. I've had some odd encounters over the years...one very scary and unbelievable!
Mara...
It was actually pretty neat, and made the night more interesting!
Tammy...
I am waiting for JL to say that he lived in an apartments with "spirits!" lol
Rich...
She was the one that first suggested that she was the ghost of Mary!
Maria...
They are fun to read, aren't they?
Wipe your darn feet next time before entering my house! Were you raised in a barn?
Signed,
Mary
Oh, and keep it down. You are going to wake the dead!
Signed,
Mary
Richard - too bad you didn't get a picture. But now we have both you and Laura to share your spooky experiences with us.
Terry...
We have the tour brochure somewhere, I'll have to check it to see why Mary remains at the house!
B & C...
Thanks, it is a cool story and my wife kept telling me to write about it!
Don...
I wish I had been, but alas, I had to drive home! lol
Laura...
I would love to hear about it!
EEEEEE!! Spooky & cooky! I don't know about that. I'm scared! KM
Ok, fine. I will tell my recent ghost story. A friend was staying with me back in April of this year. She was sleeping, so I thought. My husband was snoring, which usually doesn't annoy me much. I got up and thought I saw an 'image' at the bedroom door. I have a pretty cocky attitude when it comes to these things so I just kinda waved it away and gave it a dirty look. I walked into the den where my friend was sleeping and sat on the couch trying to gather my senses and figure out how I was going back to sleep or if I could. I started getting very cold. (Bone chilling and unreasonably cold). My friend suddenly said, "Mel, who is with you? That's not Tony." I said, "What are you talking about?" She said, "Who is that man with you?" I said, "No one is here but me." Well, she went off casting out demons in the name of The Lord. I started feeling warmer and this scared me a little. I refused to talk about it until lunch the next day. When she described the person she saw my blood ran cold because it was exactly I what I saw standing at the bedroom door. She insisted I have my home 'excerised'. I, on the other hand, decided to continue with my cocky attitude and nothing has happened since. An argument can be made that it really happened because we both saw the same thing. I believe it only has as much energy as you give it.
Mel...
Great story, you should post it as a blog! I am sure everyone would love to hear the story! I loved the "mary"commnents too ...very funny!
Mike...
And now you can add Mel!
Kristin...
It's fun ... I'm not afraid of ghosts ...well... not too much! lol
No, I don't think I will post it in a blog. I don't want to sound crazy. Ahem... crazier (as Susan M would say). Once you open this stuff up for discussion the mind will begin second guessing.
The Mary comments were predictable. You had it coming!
Mel...
I don't think anyone would think that you are crazy, unless the man you both saw was Jim Beam, Johny Walker. Jack Daniels or Captain Morgan!
You left poor Mary all alone?? Poor Mary! Sorry but I'm laughing at you running away from a woman who didn't know what was going on :)
Richard: What a cool experience! I bet that was Mary. I feel bad for her...a poor lost soul wondering why so many people were coming by. Kinda sad.
Mandi...
Well, I blame it on my wife. She's skittish! lol
Chris Ann...
I need to find the history of this ghost, I don't remeber exactly how the story goes but if I find out I'll pass it along!
It's gotta be the wife right? A big bad macho guy like you wouldn't be afraid now would he? My husband was chasing down a mouse one time and it ran right at him...he screamed like a girl and ran the other way. His sister was there so I have someone to back my story up! We laughed at the big bad hunter!! :)
Mandi- That is no fair. I would run from a mouse before running from a ghost.
Mel- I've ran from both!! I will say though that I wasn't hunting either one.....I leave them alone!
Mandi...
Mice don't bother me, trick or treaters terrify me! lol
Mel..
Yeah, mice are icky!
Mandi...
If they get in my house I'll hunt them down and I will get them! ;)
Which one Richard? the mice or the ghosts? Sometimes I'm glad I'm a woman.....I'm not obligated to track down either one. LOL
Very interesting story. I do believe and I think your story is more confirmation that ghosts do exist.
Mandi...
In my house, I would hunt down BOTH! lol
Betina...
Well, there is something going on, that's for sure!
Richard...many strange things happen that are hard to explain...so I can't doubt your story although i can not recall seeing any kind of a spirit...except of the elixer kind!
Richard- They are icky? Is that your professional opinion? They have germs and that makes them more scary!
Mandi- That must be nice... When I told Tony the ghost story he said (very nonchalantly), "So, the house is haunted now? That sucks." When there was a mouse he said, "So... What do you want me to do about it?"
Richard- you're THE MAN! :)
Mel- At times like that I.... 1. Contact a priest, minister, pastor or whatever else I can think of to come get rid of the ghosts 2. call an exterminator and then get a cat! I feel they are more qualified then myself to get rid of the problem!
Bill...
So you have met John Barleycorn then.
Mel...
You should not be so cavalier about using a professional term like icky. Mice are icky, germs are yukky. As for you husband, well there you go!
Mandi...
Knowing how to delegate tasks is the mark of the true leader!
Mandi- I can and do handle it myself. I heard tweets in the chimney and trying to figure out what to do about it. I would hate to set the little ones of fire. Maybe it is time to call in the professionals.
Mel- I'm just saying......leave it to a professional!
Richard- as I always say....I don't have all the answers but I do know how to find the answers!
Richard- I laugh because I used the term yuckie in a meeting with new agents once. I followed it up with the phrase, "And that is my professional opinion."
Mandi- You are right. Apparently I cannot do it all.
Mel...
Aw, isn't that tweet?
Mandi...
Once again, the mark of a good leader!
Mel...
You might think you're determined ... others might use the word stobborn! ;)
Not sure how you meant that but I will take it as a compliment.
Mel...
Stubborn can be good at times!
