Coweta Fayette Real Estate & Newnan Homes for sale blog by Richard Weisser of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Metro Brokers

Sometimes I like to add a little spice to life. But even that requires making a decision!

Bottles of hot sauceTastes change over time. When I was a young man, food was relatively bland. The average meal was meat and potatoes and perhaps pasta with a tomato sauce. If you wanted to purchase a spicy condiment, you might have been able to find a bottle of Tabasco sauce in some stores, but that was probably your only choice.

But times have changed, and we demand more zest and flavor from our food. And it's not as simple as adding a few dashes of hot sauce, because there are hundreds of brands from which to choose. We are not only adding spice to the food, but we're also seeking a particular nuance of both pepper and heat to enhance the flavor. Our tastes have changed.

At some point, we come to the realization that what used to be exotic is now the norm. We demand more from pizzazz from our meals today than we did in the past.

We also expect more from our homes, our cars, and our technologies. What might have sufficed just ten years ago is now woefully inadequate for our 21st century demands. Our televisions have gotten bigger and bigger while our stereos have gotten smaller and smaller.

I can actually remember when wall-to-wall carpet was invented, and homeowners could hardly wait to get their hardwood floors covered up with jute-backed polyester. And then every wall was covered with a different textured wallpaper, grass-cloth, or mirrors! And that was state of the art decorating at the time.

So before your purchase a new home, car, TV or bottle of hot sauce always remember: Tastes change over time.

Boy don't they!  You are hearing this from a girl who grew up in the 80's with a lot of hair and hairspray... What were we thinking???

Posted by Marlene Pellegrini over 3 years ago

Great Saturday evening thoughts. I wonder if our children will find our tastes as horrific as we find our parents tastes. Wallpaper comes to mind.

I'm always surprised how many sellers I've had that conversation with. They don't understand why we have to take their pink toilet, bathtub and sink into consideration when deciding on the price of their home. "Why? They are top of the line!" I have to remind them, that while they might have been top of the line, they are now dated, a word that buyers do not like! And when a seller is trying to decide on what color to paint a room... please, please, please pick a neutral color... don't pick the latest fad...

As for the hot sauce, my husband collects hot sauces, we have over 100 different bottles from as far away as the Philippines, various countries in the Caribbean and Africa. :)

Marlene...

I wonder who decides what we like and when we like it? lol

Ellie...

As a former professional paper hanger, I am responsible for THOUSANDS of rolls on walls in GA!

Alisha...

I hate it when a listing agent tells me a property is "dated." In our market, that almost means unsellable, unless it's priced rock-bottom!

BTW our favorite is from Belize ... Marie Sharp's Habanero sauce goes into nearly EVERYTHING I cook!

Posted by Richard Weisser Coweta Fayette Real Estate over 3 years ago

Sooo... would you believe he has that one?

Did you go to Belize? We were there a few years ago... Loved it... It's "Unbelizeable!!" ~A:)

Alisha...

Actually, I got in in Gatlinburg Tennessee. There's a place there called the Pepper Palace and they have HUNDREDS of selections. Cheech Marin does this mango-based one that I like too. I use it in salad dressing.

I have never been farther south that St. Augustine FL! lol

Posted by Richard Weisser Coweta Fayette Real Estate over 3 years ago

Ah, but St. Augustine is beautiful...

Richard...as always a great post and I enjoy yours as well! Really, who DOES make all these decisions? They never call me and ask my opinion? No polls, nothing.

Probably better that way...they would not print most of my responses anyway.

Richard - Back to the hair... If it was good enough for Jon Bon Jovi, that is what was done. Thank goodness even he came to his senses. It is funny to look back at the pics though.

Richard, my wife is salivating over the hot sauce picture...everything goes in cycles...such a true statement!

Yes it is...I need to go back there soon!

Thom...

But they (whoever they are) sure let us know when it ISN'T right! lol

Marlene...

You gave me an idea for a whole new blog ... about bad timing in my life regarding style and timing!

Posted by Richard Weisser Coweta Fayette Real Estate over 3 years ago

Many years ago, I sold a a home to a family from Mexico.  They insisted that they needed a back yard with lots of sun for a garden.

I innocently asked if they were going to grow tomatoes.  No, Jalapeno peppers, they said.

Of course, the Jalapeno peppers are in all markets today.

Tastes change.

Jer...

I even carry my own with me when we go out! I LOVE hot sauce!

Lenn...

I was nineteen before I had even HEARD of a taco. And the spiciest dish we had at home was Italian Sausage. And I can't remember any peppers except stuffed green bell peppers.

I also remember my first grits when I came south. Now you can get them anywhere!

Posted by Richard Weisser Coweta Fayette Real Estate over 3 years ago

My taste certainly has changed over the years - thanks for the post - very good - and I also like spicy foods better now!

Posted by Norma J Elkins Realtor Elkins Home Selling Team ( Exit Triple "E" Realty) over 3 years ago

Richard - unfortunately, with many people it also applies to relationships and the spouse of their youth is no longer spicey enough for today. Just have to be able to add a little habanero into your everyday life. Thai food works also.

Posted by Mike Saunders (Lanier Partners) over 3 years ago

Richard,  When it come to hot sauces, the hotter the better for me.  Of course, you don't want to make the mistake of going to the restroom after slicing Habanero peppers.  I still cringe.

When it comes to taste in homes...I think classic architecture and modeling doesn't really change that much.  The fads come and go.

Richard,

Enjoyed this. Very entertaining and right on. When are we going to be bringing back harvest gold or avocado? :)

The older I get the more experiemental and adventursome I have become in regard to spices.  I thought it was age but you are probably right about it being the environment.  When my mother comes for dinner she is always surprised at what I am serving.  She usually loves it.  At her house she is still serving up fried chicken with potatoes and gravy...

El Yucatan Habanero sauce is really good on fried chicken!  It can be purchased at WalMart, of course.  But my favorite is Striracha Hot Chili Sauce.  It is made in CA but served in Vietnamese restaurants.  (No, I didn't miss the entire point of your post).

Richard:  Saw some avocado colored appliances in the past week.  I wonder if those will ever come back into fashion?  I sure hope not.

Posted by Chris Ann Cleland, Associate Broker, Northern VA (Long & Foster REALTORSĀ®, Gainesville, VA) over 3 years ago

Recognizing them is one thing, Richard. Accepting them is the other. However, the most important part is simply being comfortable enough with oneself to be happy and comfortable exactly where they are.

Thanks

Yes sir, I do believe you are right on.  I once heard that our tastes, in food, change every 7 years.  So what is cool today watch out it won't be that way if a few short years.

Norma...

Sometimes we learn to not only accept, but to prefers new tastes!

Mike...

Change is good, but Thai has a little too much coconut for me ... I like the spice though and grow Thai hot peppers at home!

Rich...

I agree, you can't go wrong with the classics. We still sell a lot of historic homes in our area!

Steve...

I remember those quite well! Even the retro phase of these has passed!

Mel...

I love hot sauce on fried chicken. My favorite for chicken is Red Rooster, and inexpensive sauce that is perfect for chicken. I also like El Yucateco habanero in red and green, Also Grace crushed pepper sauce is great for chili and sloppy joes.

I am not one that takes to change very well.  I usually eat the same things at the same restraunts.  Tough rut to get out of!

Posted by William Feela Realtor 651-674-5999 No. Branch,MN (WHISPERING PINES REALTY) over 3 years ago

Yes, everything changes...but that's not necessarily a bad thing, right? Not only do tastes change but also our points of view on different topics. I personally love change. How boring is it to always eat the same foods, follow the same routine or never expand our minds to accept new ideas?

Chris Ann...

I wonder if Stainless will have a lot of staying power?

Bo...

Why do people feel compelled to change something that they like, but might be out of style!

Don...

That makes me wonder what's next!

We have actually been considering covering some of our walls with mirrors of late. Alright, so I've been thinking about it and my wife has been telling me no.

Because you know you're going to like it, so what's wrong with that? BTW how did your hunt go?

Cecily...

JL...

You know my little sister used to always say "My tastes buds changed" we used to make fun of her of the frequency of the change.  One year she hated tomatoes the next she loved them it was truly bizarre.  I am one of those that get's nervous about change but quickly get's over it.  KM

Ahhh, the memories!  Avocado appliances, green shag rugs over beautiful hardwood flooring!  Hah!

In South Philadelphia, it was red carpeting, oil lamps, smoked mirrors, etc.  Sometimes there was even a Suit of Armor and a bull fighter somewhere!  Hahahaha.

I say, thank God tastes change!

Posted by Sonja Adams (Samson Proprties) over 3 years ago

Yes they do!! A few years ago my grandmother said, "This washer and dryer are almost new!" Well they were avacado green....not even close to almost new!! LOL! I look back at my taste in decorating just 10 years ago and am amazed!

Posted by Mandi Perkins (AZ Big Sky Realty, Inc.) over 3 years ago

Richard, what is your favorite type?  My wife is a big fan of tabasco, but here of late she has been using a lot of Daves Insanity.  She used it through her entire pregnancy.

Posted by Jeremy Blanton (210 Consulting~ Social Media Advisors) over 3 years ago

Kristin...

I like just about everything when it comes to food. I can deal with most strong tastes in moderation, and I rarley change my mind! ;)

Susan...

I saw a house here decorated like that once ... it was bizarre! Crazy how that could have been in style for five minutes!

Sonja...

I had a house listed with yellow countertops last year!

Posted by Richard Weisser Coweta Fayette Real Estate over 3 years ago

Richard- My husband will put Tabasco on everything. And he loves jalepanos. But me I like a little spice but I want to be able to taste the food. Times do change but I have always tried to keep things tasteful but not too spicy! They last longer that way. Is this being neutral?

Posted by Lori Franks ~ Brookings, Oregon (Real Estate Consultant) over 3 years ago

It is definitely time to spice things up and step out of our comfort zone. To be successful in today's market it is a must. Thanks for sharing.

Almost new and avocado ... no that is funny! lol

Jer...

Dave's insanity is toxic ... I mean, that stuff will burn a hole through you stomach! I like Marie Sharps Belize Gold, especially on pizza!

Lori...

Aw, you're just playing it safe! ;)

Allen...

What have we got to lose? THX
