Wow, it's hard to believe that it's already November. Halloween has come and gone, and the election is over, and now we are all taking a collective sigh of relief. But time waits for no man.
As I was driving through downtown Newnan yesterday, the workers were putting up the CHRISTMAS decorations. Oh my gosh! Can it possibly be time for Christmas already? Where has the year gone?
Newnan is one of those picture postcard towns that look great when all the halls are decked with boughs of holly, and I know the department stores are already in full holiday mode, but it just reminded me that I am not ready for this!
It was just another kick in the pants for me. It's time to get on the ball, and to shift into the holiday mode. Hmmm...I wonder if I should put my blog URL in my Christmas cards?

I can't comment about your post about Christmas.
It's way to early.
Better get ready - its almost here! and what are you getting me this year ?
Richard, The stores around here have had their Christmas displays up for weeks now. I'm not ready yet either. How about this...it's November 6th, the start of the 2012 Presidential Election season :)
Richard,
Thanks for the post. I am so with you. Last week my wife and I were in Home Depot and they had all the Christmas decorations up. Perhaps a attitude check and I'll be adjusted to the program.
My brother has had his presents wrapped and ready to ship since August...I prefer enjoying one holiday at a time...gotta move Hazel the Witch out of the foyer and make room for the turkey....no need to rush these things.
Can someone pleeze slow down the calendar? This year has gone by to fast and I am not ready for the end of the year yet.
Lenn...
You see, that's what I thought too! I mean, the leaves are still on the trees!
Robert...
Hopefully a closing! lol
Rich...
Holy crap, I don't EVEN want to THINK about that yet! ;)
Doesn't Thanksgiving come before Christmas on the calendar? Just a thought. Thanks for the post.
William...
Thanksgiving is late this year, so Christmas will REALLY sneak up on us!
S & D...
There's always a rush ... the day before the holiday! lol
Don...
I know it, what happened to 2008???
I was thinking the same thing this morning. I saw a WalMart commercial about staffing up for the holiday season. It may seem too early to think about but it is coming no matter what!
HI Richard, I asked the bank manager yesterday when I went in ... WHAT NO THANKSGIVING THIS YEAR? WE ARE NO LONGER THANKFUL FOR ANYTHING? He looked at me rather stunned, and I said, you have Christmas Decorations on your windows and all over the bank... can't we please be thankful first? He then said, OhI will see about getting a few pumpkins and Pilgrims. I just shook my head in disgust.
Brian...
But once you've bought your turkey, that's about it! lol
Mel...
That's a great commercial ...opening all the registers. Brilliant marketing, I think!
Richard- I would have done most of my Christmas shopping there any way... "If they don't sell it at WalMart we don't need it." Where have I heard that? Oh right, it was someone I know very well.
Richard,
This Halloween night instead of hearing Michael Jackson's thriller I was listening (turned of) on 2 radio stations Christmas music. Yes! "Christmas". What is happening to enjoying the Holidays as they come? I know Christmas is around the corner but what about all the rest? I think the advertisers try to push sales for the stores earlier this year due to the economy.
Beth Skidmore
Richard - I have been seeing Christmas items in stores for several weeks now and last week even heard Christmas music. AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH.
I love Christmas but lately it has been getting to be a bit too much.
come on scrouge it is time to get ready. Not really not until after Thanksgiving anyway
Gail...
LOL There is just no money in being thankful, I guess!
Mel...
I will tell you a secret ... my life works at the largest privately owned department store chain in the country, I have a card in my wallet for a 20% employee discount, and in the 15 years she has worked there I have NEVER used it!
Beth..
I an CERTAIN that is the reason. My wife says sales are down substantially at her store.
Mike...
It's all about the dollar! Which in our times, might not be such a bad idea.
Yeah its seems x-mas makes its way earlier each year..but the innocence and joy that follows makes it fine by me:) I do also agree we need to put more emphasis on the meaning of Thanksgiving our youth think its just a day to eat turkey!
Hi Charlie...
I'm just NOT ready! lol
OH-OH...
Someone is not logged in! But thanks for the comment!
Richard - do you get down to Hogansville much, I grew up there, still have some relatives in that area, one cousin lives in Newnan and more relatives in LaGrange. There is a very popular country singer that is from Newnan, he had a song about the river near Newnan, cannot remember his name, have you met him?
Richard, when I was young (the earth's crust was still cooling), Christmas season started with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Pararde, Santa was on the last float! Oh well, ho ho ho!
Richard -- Awesome post! I hate the commercialism associated with Christmas. And, as a result, the season starting earlier and earlier...I think its sad that corporate America forces this down our throats rather than allowing us to breathe between holidays. But, its all about the dollar, right? Ugh.
Wow it is way too early for Christmas Richard! AHHH I guess that means it is almost time to put up my decorations then :)
I can't believe it either! Where's the pause button?!?
I noticed that the other day when I went into BJ's and saw the isles were already full of toys and Christmas decorations. What happened to Thanksgiving? Ho! Ho! Ho!
I can't even think about Christmas yet, but the stores are packed with Christmas crap already reminding me! They are already trying to get the bucks out of us!
Great photos! I'm always impressed with the quality of images you have on your blog. Anyway, I can't believe that we are already in Christmas mode. I love the downtown Christmas atmosphere but it is way too early.
It's moving in fast Richard...Eastern South Dakota have a Blizzard going on and It's coming my way for the weekend. Bambi is harder to find when covered up with a blanket of snow. LOL
Ok, so this is ironic... I am working on a blog about how excited I am that it's November and Christmas is right around the corner!! Halloween is over, election is over, bring on Christmas!
I'm pretty darned excited about Christmas this year because my huband and I had our first baby in May so it's gonna be one VERY SPECIAL Christmas this year!!
So, I say "Bring It On!!"
Richard: The holidays are coming, like it or not. I remember when we (society) used to at least wait till after Thanksgiving to put up the holiday decorations. Perhaps I should put up my Christmas tree next Halloween with a pumpkin underneath. :)
I did the last of my shopping for Christmas about two weeks ago. Now all I have to do is wait for my wife's family to invade our home.
It must be that time again Richard because my sister already called for everyone's sizes! My sister's goal for Christmas shopping is simply to get it over with by Thanksgiving. I like to think about it and try to make people happy, and I'm sure my sister does too, as long as she can do it by Thanksgiving. I'm not ready to think about it.
Hi Richard, A store I was in last week-end was already playing Christmas music. It's much too early.
B & A...
Do you mean Alan Jackson? Dog River Blues was one of his hits! I don't know him personally, other than I met him at a book signing! You can read about here:
Country Music Legend Alan Jackson comes back to Newnan Georgia for book signing at Scott's Bookstore
Laura G...
We ALWAYS watched the Macy's Parade as kids, it WAS the start of the season!
Clint...
We just gotta keep on keeping on!
Richard - yep, Alan Jackson, that is him. I think the song is "way down there on the Chattahoochie".
Richard- Did you catch that Garmin commercial last year? Give a, give a, give a Garmin? I liked it because I like the Christmas Carol they stole. Anyhow I saw it on TV last night and thought...oh my less than 2 months away!
I just can't get a break from the holidays!!! My oh my where does the time go?
Jer...
My wife and I are discussing putting them up early this year! It could happen!
Pam...
lol that's funny!
Michael...
Turkey meat is too cheap! lol
Darin...
It's a beautiful day here today ... no shopping for me!
Darrell...
I think it's too early too ... but the merchants may not!
Bill...
But the cold makes it FEELA like hunting season! BTW do you have game cameras set out?
Alisha...
Did you post the blog in "Whacked!!!"? I try to read every blog in the group! Congratulations on the new addition to the family. No wonder you are looking forward to Christmas!
Chris Ann...
My father used to put EVERYTHING up on Christmas Eve! I don't know how he did it.
JL...
And you love them very, very much!
Susan...
Ah, you're Italian so I know that Christmas is the best time of the year ...period! You love it and you know it!
Shirley...
The sweet sounds of the season! lol
Richard, Thanks! And to answer your question - no, I didn't post it in whacked... maybe I'll edit my groups so you can give it a read... not much to it... just a quick post... I'm so excited about the holidays I can't stand it!! :)
Richard, I used to love Christmas so much when I was younger. But it is such a lot of work now, and I find myself liking it less and less. I want to love it again. But I do all of the decorating, all of the cards, all of the cooking, shopping wrapping, baking, you name it. My husband puts the tree in the stand. Period. I want to know what Alisha does and try to capture some of the excitement back.
Susan, please share your secrets of how you persuade your husband to put the tree in the stand? Mine would do it for me if I waited until Christmas Eve... He complains that I put it up too early and would prefer a fake one. Not gunna happen.
Mel, the secret is to carry the freaking tree all by myself and try to wrestle the f#*king thing through the front door, thereby maybe accidentally taking some paint off the wall or getting some sap on the carpets, God forbid (did I mention he's in carpeting) and maybe, just maybe, putting the stand up without any protection on the carpet and maybe some water will get on the carpet. It's the only reason he doesn't expect me to do the lawn. He's afraid I'll screw it up. I learned everything I know from the Lucille Ball Book of Practical Living. I rush headlong into everything and spend a good bit of time undoing all I've done incorrectly. If what I'm doing doesn't have any economic fallout, he doesn't help. He also lobbies every year for a fake tree. Pffftt. Not gunna happen here either.
Richard - What happened to celebrating Thanksgiving first, then putting up the decor for Christmas?? Although in my area it makes sense to do it now, before it gets really cold and it's a miserable time putting them out.
Susan, (as I turn it into a little bashing) I wish your advice could help me. I am like the little chicken hawk in the Fog Horn Leg Horn cartoon dragging the tree behind me. If I chip the paint I fix it. If I get sap on the carpet it is up to me. Getting the stand out of the attic is the challenge. I have to get a ladder to pull the ladder down. Now that takes skill! But if I waited and tolerated a fake tree there would be no problem, right?
A very wise man told me once, "I realized early in my marriage there are things my wife wants, and there are things she wants right now."
Susan, I didn't mention that if anyone touched my lawn they would be shot on sight with no questions asked.
Isn't it amazing how quickly this year has gone. Wow, I am with you...so not ready for Christmas and not quit in the spirit either.
My local radio station started playing XMAS music. I noticed it yesterday & had to change the channel after 3 songs. WAY TOO SOON people! KM
"I realized early in my marriage there are things my wife wants, and there are things she wants right now." Mel, is this copyrighted? A wise man indeed. Does he make housecalls?
Mel & Susan- first of all turning the tables on the guys works VERY well indeed....you know how they don't do dishes well so we stop asking. Get all the holiday stuff out and put it in his favorite chair and make him step over it, then wait til it's dinner time and begin to "try" putting things up. I did this for the first few years of marriage and he got so annoyed that now when I take the things out he jumps to attention....works like a charm!
Susan, I haven't spoken with him in many years but don't think the quote has been copyrighted. I think the guy is a genius. I met his wife and she was a very happy woman.
Mandi, Mandi, Mandi, your husband sounds like a rank amateur in the slacking off department. Our home resembles the set of Everybody loves Raymond, or as my mom likes to say... it feels like The War of the Roses over here! Little things. Like his shoes. He wears dress shoes very infrequently, and when he does, they linger in the family room, in the middle of the floor for days, even weeks, I have found out, when I decided to just leave them there. It reminded me of the time Raymond and Debra decided to see who would carry the suitcase upstairs. Another example is he eats yogurt and leaves the yogurt with the spoon in it on the end table. After many requests, he still did it. So I put it in his sneaker, with the spoon in it. He took it out of his sneaker and put in on the counter. Spoon and all, 2 feet from the trashcan and dishwasher. I escalated the yogurt war and put the yogurt container and the spoon on his pillow. He put it on the night table and left it there. I gave up. All of this, mind you, without a word of conversation. As if it was perfectly normal to find a yogurt container with the spoon in it in your sneaker or pillow.
Richard, I saw the Halloween decorations in the local WalMart get ripped down and replaced by the Christmas tree. I think the world is all about shopping.
Mandi, wise words from such a young woman but it is funny you mentioned dishes. This morning I noticed the dishes had been unloaded from the dishwasher. I said, "Hey, did you run that last night? I went to bed early and didn't turn it on." He said, "No. But all the dishes were clean so I put them away." I don't have to tell you how I spent the next 20 minutes...
Susan I'm dying over here!! The yogurt story is just too funny!!! Yes my husband is a bit of an amateur compared to yours. However I will say that he was a tough one to tame it took about 7 years for him to understand that I almost always get my way. I am more stubborn then him so I win!
Mel My kids do that too!!!! LOL!! I still hate when others load or unload the dishwasher because the dishes never get clean....it is an art I tell you!
Mandi, my kitchen, lawn and Christmas decor are MY domain. I would be very upset if anyone tried to help. Case and point- my mother-in-law plugged up my garbage disposal with potato skins. It only happened once.
I'm with you Richard it's to soon to think about Christmas cause I'm not ready. The kids are grown and one is 1500 miles away and No grandkids. I'm going to Vegas!!!!
Susan, the yogurt story is funny but I wouldn't have taken it as far. You are a Pro and my hero! (I just make brownies with nuts in them. That gets him every time). I must procure the Lucy book!!!
Richard - I walked into a CVS drug store today and couldn't believe it when I saw a Christmas tree complete with presents, ornaments and playing Christmas music. Did they forget about Thanksgiving?
Oh wow...
I missed one of the best conversations of all time! Stupid me, going to a Chamber of Commerce event!
Mel, I don't know why I bother because eventually, I can't sustain the frustration. Richard, you should have stayed in! Mandi, I am stubborn too but it turns out my husband is an immovable object.
Susan...
I am going to write a post soon about how we solved a lot of our holiday "problems!" Sounds like all you need is careful planning and a little more cooperation.
Where did Thanksgiving go? Did it pass and I didnt see it?
Nancy...
You buy a turkey and that's it. These store are trying to move big-screen TVs and jewelry! That's what happened to Thanksgving! lol
My husband is gripping about the commercials on TV already promoting Christmas. They just come earlier and earlier every year!
Richard,
UGH! I think they were putting up Christmas decorations in July. So we have skipped Thanksgiving and are now on to the commercialized holiday..... I have threatened to have Christmas in January, then you get all the stuff on sale...CHEAP! Or celebrate it in its true form...humble and meek.
Ann
I am not ready either. It is not even Thanksgiving yet. Lets get through that one first.
Seems it's earlier every year and I can't stand it. I was in a shop last weekend, and they were playing Christmas music---the vocal stuff, which I think is even harder to take than the instrumental---and I just hurried to leave...it feels like such an imposition---besides killing the true spirit. And you just watch for valentine candy to be on the shelves before the end of December! Arrrgh! I'm exhausted just thinking about it.
The lights are already up in Hilton Head--all of our beautiful pine trees are covered with blue lights. I just wish the stores wouldn't exploit the holiday so early.
It is my favorite time of year and I am already doing a little browaing. I usually am finished by December 6th except for missed gifts for cousins. I pretty much volunteer the whole month of December I love the bell ringing.
Sleigh bells ring....are you listening....OK now you'll be huming that the rest of the day. Pretty soon, retailers will just leave up all the decorations because it just won't be worth taking them down for the 2 months they're not used! Thanks for sharing and warm greetings from Paradise.
Richard,
Great photos ! It is hard to believe that time of year is upon us already. Our XMAS/holiday calendars arrived a few days ago to send to our database. I was in shock - of course my wife Stephanie ordered them as I would have forgot : )
Chris
Somehow Christmas comes as a surprise to me every year. I was reminded of this when my girlfriend asked me last week what I wanted to do for New years. . . .
My wife said no decor till after thanksgiving...what a bummer!
Time flies, huh Richard? I know every year the Christmas merchandising comes earlier and earlier. Hopefully they will pull through this sure to be hard season.
Great pics, the reds look a little like upstate NY a few weeks ago. I can't believe how fast the months are going by. Soon we will have snow here, and then I can get on the skis.
I noticed a lot of the stores by this weekend will have most of their Christmas stuff up. I guess they need the bucks from the next season!
Richard -
The trees are out - its time to deck the halls already. I like it - "time waits for no man" You are right.
A continuance of the conversation with Susan, Mandi and I last night- I call this the battle of the sexes.
I've had my tree up for weeks.
Mel...
We came up with an amazing solution at our house! It's on my blog list!
Santa arrive the week before Thanksgiving this year...I remember when it was after Thanksgiving.
Well then slip on the lucky boxers and post it!
It seems he slipped out of the old lucky boxers in my SCSPSMM post. Yikes. Graphic compliments of the newly diagnosed Gail.
Mel and Susan...
I have to take some pics first. It's a good how to survive Christmas and stay married tip! I'll try to do it tomorrow!
Susan and Mel...
BTW the CC/Whacked gang scored big with three Stars this morning!
Umm, Richard I will never look at you the same way again. You gotta see Susan's post.
Susan,
Where do I get a copy of the Lucy book? Sounds like I might need it.
Ann
I wrapped presents yesterday!! Half done with the shopping!! But I noticed the house behind me has put some lights up. Ugh, I'm behind!!
Richard - I, too, am not ready at all, but I am in the mood for the holidays this year for some reason. Perhaps because I see it as an oasis after the desert of negativity that we've all crawled through this year.
Mel...
Oh no, now what?
Way too early for me. So far I've heard 3 Christmas commercials on TV.
Rich
Charlotte NC
Rich...
Well, it looks like we're in full swing now!
RW - Congrats on the feature! Looks like some of my favorite people on the front page today! KM
Hi Richard, Wow...I remember back in the day when stores would wait until Thanksgiving to push Christmas. This year I saw Christmas stuff before Halloween. On the flip side, I'm thinking of decorating early myself because if I go to all the hassle of hanging the garland, I might as well get more enjoyment out of it!! Cheers, Harley
Susan ~ (Sorry so late in responding to you... it'll probably get lost in the sea of comments)
Step 1 - have a new baby (have I lost you yet??)
Step 2 - enjoy seeing everything through the eyes of a new baby...
Step 3 - put up the decorations, cook and bake like there's no tomorrow...
Step 4 - have a lot of parties, spend time with the ones you love
Step 5 - imbibe! (perhaps that is one of the most important steps!!)
The end! ~A:)
Christmas always creeps up on me too. I can't believe that Christmas music is playing in all of the stores already.
It seems early for all this but I'm really looking forward to our kids coming home for Christmas for the first time in three or so years.
Alisha, I am 49 years old. If I have a new baby, I will be delivering it at Ripley's Believe it or not hotel of crazy people. I do remember those days those, my babies are 12 and 19. Life was so nice when you had a bunch of little tyke toys under the tree. Thanks for the memories!
It does seem crazy for there to be Christmas stuff already, we still have to get through Thanksgiving
Hello All....
Thanks for joining in! I'm working on some new stuff right now!
You are right - it is getting to be an awful lot like Christmas -- went into a store to buy groceries this week and the Christmas music was playing.
Yikes! Not Christmas decorations yet... Can't we get through Thanksgiving first?
I WISH OUR BUYERS WOULD MOVE THAT QUICKLY! :)
hristmas is going to be here before we know it.. I'm not ready either. We are still having warm weather too
Cruised thru Walmart tonight after work heading to RedBox to rent a video and I was amazed at all the Christmas Decorations. Please not yet!!I panicked and went looking for place-mats since Thanksgiving will be at our house this year with daughters new in-laws. Found the Thanksgiving decorations on sale with all the Halloween stuff. Works to my advantage but it is a little sad we are just bypassing the celebration of Thanksgiving. Guess it's not the money makers for the stores that Christmas is.
I am ready....it is my favorite time of year, once I come to terms with it...I never want summer to end, the pool to close, so I can't give it up , and loose a lot of fall "hanging on" to summer...then before I know it, it is halloween, t=giving, the the big one!
Greg ~ Hmmmm... Sleigh Bells Ringing, huh... gee thanks... totally stuck in my head now!! ~A:)
Richard, I always enjoy Christmas and typically put up at least two trees (actually right now I have four I could put up--long story). Yesterday afternoon though I ran into a lady that is even more into Christmas than me. She puts up five trees and starts decorating at the end of September. By the first week of November she has already started having parties and she said she started doing this after her husband died. She likes to celebrate for at least four months. I thought to myself "what a joyous way to celebrate".
