I have written before about my love for watercolor painting. It's a nice diversion and something I really enjoy doing. Although I don't get a chance to do it as often as I like, I enjoy the rare opportunities for creativity when inspiration strikes.
But I never got serious about it until I did the painting depicted in this article. No, I was not a child at the time, but a twenty-five year old man. I did not have expensive artist materials, just plain paper and those inexpensive watercolors in the little tray.
But I wanted to depict a simple impression of the mountains in fall, so I set to it! And it came out great. It's simple, it's colorful, and it says "the mountains!" Although it's not a great technical painting, it's a decent primitive and as long as I like it, that's all that matters.
This little painting inspired and motivated me to continue my work. I have, since then, purchased expensive paints, brushes, and high quality paper and have done a few hundred paintings, but none have come as close to satisfying me as this little poster of the mountains in fall.
I still have this piece in my office, and I look at it every day. It's magic to me, of the very best kind!

Nice job! I like all the colors.
And you can paint...is there anything that you cannot do? I want a post on all of your many talents.........Mel and C. will help me make you.......fess up....do not be shy....this is AR and you are among friends.....
RW,
A true artist. You realize what you`re calling is don`t you?
That would make an awesome greeting card. Seriously! Thank you for sharing this. :-)
Mel...
I didn't have the slightest idea what i was doing, which adds a very basic and primitive quality to the painting! I like the colors too!
Julie...
I have the curse of my great-grandfather "Pup" Dietrich. Pup was from Germany, and he would pick up discarded orange crates, nail the boards together, and paint on them with enamel house paints. The results are unbelievable! Oh, there's a post for "Family Ties!" Oh, the curse ... Pup wasn't much for holding down a job! lol
Scott...
Yeah, I need to figure out how to put this to good use!
Nice Richard...I am lucky to do stick people and stick trees...B&W only of course! The only one you have to impress is yourself!
Carolyn...
You are so much better at monetizing than I am. I should have gotten help years ago to figure out how to make a living doing this, instead, I'm just enjoying a hobby!
Bill...
Sometimes, you say to yourself, "Did I really do that?"
Wow your first painting and you even have shadows on the tree trunks! Hey did you ever watch that curly hair guy who liked to say things like....I think a little tree wants to live right here.....I loved to watch that guy
hi Richard,
It's a very beautiful painting! You're very talented....my Stepmother is a watercolour artist and has sold many paintings and won many awards, etc. She didn't start painting with watercolours until she was in her 50s.
Perhaps you'll post more photos of your art? I'd like to see them....
Jo
Richard - You have an incredible gift and are so blessed to be able to create such beautiful artwork! I think the simplicity of that painting makes it all the more inspiring! Thank you for sharing another side of you! :-)
Mandi...
But not on the ground! lol His name was Bob Ross, and he inspired us with sayings like "it's your world, you can make it anything you want!" Unfortunately, he succumbed to disease but his "Joy of Painting" was a pleasure to watch!
you did a great job with the little paint set - - - I'd love to see what you can do with the fancy brushes...!
Jo-Anne...
After reading your nice comment I'm thinking about doing a series on just the paintings I have here in my office ... about a dozen or so! That might be interesting.
Donna...
Ive just had a little more time to try these things than most! Hmmm ... I am writing a note for another post.
Gene...
Not much better lol!
Richard - That painting is GREAT! It brings out emotion, and that is not something everyone can do with a brush! You're a natural! Keep painting.
Richard, Are you still going to talk to us after you're famous? Any technical training in painting or does the skill come naturally to you?
Richard-I like the painting. I love the fall colors. I love colorful pictures too. I think that is one reason why I like Thomas Kinkade pictures so much. Thanks for sharing this with us. Love to see more of what you have done. Post them so we can all see.
Darla...
Thanks, I appreciate those nice comments. I need to get back on the painting bandwagon!
Richard I...
No technical training at all! I wish I had a little to help with technique!
Laura...
I think I'll do a series!
Ha no shadows on the ground..well the next time I draw a stick tree or person I shall remeber to use shadows!
Richard, this is so wonderful. I am so impressed. I would give anything to be able to paint with water colors. Beautiful.
Mandi...
It's something that you pick up as you go ... shadows give a watercolor depth and a 3D look! THX
Audrey...
It just takes a little practice! Thanks for the kind words!
Richard,
Looks like you could set up shop and be a painter... if real estate does not work out. Then you would be a starving artist instead of a starving Realtor?
Ann
Richard- This is a great story! It reminded me that sometimes you have to start out small, and then as you enjoy what you're doing, you'll get better. Thanks for the post (and for sharing your artwork!)
I can see why you like it. great subject matter and gorgeous colors, just one more reason I love fall!
Ann...
Hey, I think that I would prefer to be a starving artist than a starving real estate agent! Excellent point!
Ilyce...
You are most welcome, and thank you for the nice comment.
Leslie...
Oh I love it too! It's great!
wow so he writes, he takes photos, he's a Realtor AND he does WATERCOLOURS! oh me oh my - you talented guy you - The watercolour is vibrant - smokey - and bluey......beautiful!
Richard,
You have many talents my friend and you never cease to amaze. As Liz says you write, take photos, sell real estate and paint. And if I am not mistaken you also play the guitar. Next we will be finding out that you are the next contestant on Dancing with the Stars, right?
Liz...
Now if I could just eliminate this "work" thing and free up some more time!
Don...
Dancing is definitely not on the list! lol
It's when we can inspire ourselves that we can truly achieve greatness.
Oh, come on Richard. I will lead.
I love that picture. It depicts a love of color and a talent for conformation.
I love all of my paintings no matter how amateurish they appear to others. They all talk to me.
Richard: It's amazing what we are capable of when we set our minds to it. Your painting is very nice. Has a calming effect to it.
Richard,
I think it might be a good change of pace...
Ann
Richard, its a great painting, I have never dabbled in watercolors but I have thought about it. I love your use of color and perspective of the trees and mountains. If it makes you feel good about the accomplishment of the painting, thats all it needs to do. We are usually our own worst critic and when I make something that makes me feel good, I know its cool. :) Please do share some of your other paintings.
Richard ... that is a beatiful watercolor, thank you for sharing! pippa
