Being in the real estate business, I often wonder what people would purchase if money was no object. Would it be a fifty room mansion in Vail or a Manhattan penthouse?
For me, the answer is simple. I would like a little piece of heaven with a flowing mountain stream brimming with trout and some great views of surrounding, tree covered mountains. I want a place to grow my own vegetables and I want to get up every morning and do chores.
I want to play an active role in controlling my environment, and I want to sleep the kind of sleep that comes from doing hard work and eating good wholesome food!
At this point in my life it's still a dream, but it's one that I hope to achieve one day! I am a driven individual, and I will make it happen some day. So it's off to work today to take another step towards achieving my goal! I can't wait to get there.

As I get a little older each day I think how I look forward to the simple life as well!
Well Mine is a Nice Ranch Home about 1800 SF on one acre of land with wilderness around me and not far from the boating lake..
Richard,
I am thinking something very small but oceanfront...(a small private island would be ok) I just can't leave the coast....(but I want someone to cook and bring me my food....no chores for me.)
Richard, what is it they say...if you can see it you can be it! What a wonderful goal.
Richard - good dream, I would add a hot tub to that. At my age I need the jets to help the body recover from the chores.
Gary...
Simple with a side of good old-fashioned hard work! THX
Paula...
Easy to take care of and plenty of fish available! ;)
Julie...
I want to do simple repetitive chores. I'm tired of thinking every day! lol
Richard: That is a very achievable dream. You'll get there one day. But just out of curiosity, what does your wife think of this dream? I find my husband and I have different ideas of our dream locations.
Laura...
I will add that to my list of mottoes! THX
Mike...
So you don't think a swimming hole in a freezing stream would do the trick? lol
Richard,
When you find that little slice of heaven you describe, see if there's another one like it for me. :)
Steve
Richard - Your dream sounds attainable. Thank you for sharing it with us. I hope it becomes a reality for you someday.
Richard, your dream is the exact opposite of every young man born and raised on a hard working piece of land! But I admire you for it. My dream is a house, right on the beach, in a small town where everything, including and most importantly, the library, is walking or biking distance away. And a small town house in Philadelphia and one in New York where I could stay went I go to see shows and have dinner in wonderful restaurants with Antonio Banderas. Okay, Banderas is pushing it a little as by the time I realize this dream, he and I will be too old. Truth is, I am too old for him already! Darn!
Richard, Let me know when you're ready for that place here in Maryland. I have a good agent I can recommend. Now you have me rethinking my dream of a neighborhood bar.
I have a similar dream. My dream home is located near water, 1 story, less than 2k square feet, a chief's dream kitchen, hot tub or jetted tub in the master bath, large garage or hobby shop, and swimming pool. A place to hold large outside partys and family gatherings but too far out for 'pop ins'. The state and acreage have yet to be decided.
It may not sound like much but right now I am in suburbia. Perhaps when the kids move out I will find my little piece of heaven.
I'm not too sure what my dream is just yet, my wife hasn't told me. Take care Richard.
Did I mention I would like to sit outside in my nickers when the weather allows? (Just ribbing ya).
Richard ~ My dream is that I would love to have a U-shaped ranch, with the U making a courtyard in the back, by water (either a lake, stream or beachy area). Not too much property but enough to keep neighbors out of my "personal space". Enough room to host family holidays and such, as well as a home office, but not too big where you have to search the house for your spouse.
I have a similiar dream....I want a modest home with an outstanding view of the water with mountains in the backdrop...that is my dream, and my idea of heaven on earth...
Chris Ann...
As you might have already guessed, my wife is totally on board as long as I am the one doing the chores! lol
Steve...
Will do, my friend!
Jason...
Thanks ... I'm working on it!
Susan...
Isn't part of that comment a little too specific?
Mel...
Sounds wonderful ... I hope you find your dream place sooner rather than later! ;)
JL...
See the above comment to Chris Ann!
Mel...
Have any yellow ones?
Kathy..
That sounds very appealing, and a great place for visitors!
Konnie...
I think that we are on the same page! THX
I share the same dream, and yet I have resistance to move forward. Sometimes I feel that dream of mine is too isolating.
My youngest just turned 14 so I will wait for now. I love the convenience of being close to her school and being involved in community activities. As soon as she graduates I am outta here!
No yellow ones. I may have to put them on the shopping list!
Richard, I have re-read my comment and I don't see any one area that is too specific. Like me, the entire thing is too specific!! xxoo
Aside from a nice back yard, if I was really dreaming I'd want a few spare bedrooms to take in people down on their luck or in a bad situation. That stuff brings immense joy to me.
Hi Richard. Make that stream a river and fill it with smallmouth bass and I will join you.
Thanks for writing,
Ken
For me, I would like a relaxing home on the ocean where I could awaken every morning to the sound of crashing waves...that would be nice :)
Oh, and the house needs to have a theater in it...I have always wanted one of those!
Nice dream Richard. Mine is to live on the ocean. The house can be a shack - as long as my other half is there, and sand to walk on.
Ah, Richard, you just sent me into daydream mode. And it's nice there! I think my little piece of heaven will most likely involve a bamboo hut in the jungle, at least for awhile. The only worry will be who's going to kill my chicken for dinner. LOL
And gorgeous pic as usual! I just wrote a blog asking how the more skilled get that nice signature on there.
Ricahrd my friend, I would like to be in the valley right over the mountain from you. I am sure it is not to far from where you are now.
Have a GREAT day sir.
Jim...
Isolation is exactly what I am looking for.
Mel...
That gives you a little time to plan ..now go get those skivvies!
Susan...
Well all right then! lol
Steve...
That's a noble cause. As for my back yard, it's more grass to cut ...hey ... that's a chore!
Ken...
That water is way too cold! ;)
I'm with you on this Richard. I want some room and nobody complaing if I do something They don't agree with. I want to set on my front poarch in my drawers in the rocking chair...... anyway I have the flooplans for my house so someday.
Jer...
Ok, waves and big screen TV .. got it!
April...
And somewhere warmer, I suspect?
Terri...
A hut is a simple but pleasant dream ... and I'll check out your post to see of you got an answer!
Don...
Then we would be neighbors! lol
Cameron...
Then you know what you want and you have a good start. I hope you get the house built sooner rather than later!
That dream sounds awesome....you WILL get there. Mine is Mexico....the sun, the beach, shrimp and margarita's. Oh well, maybe manana...(sigh)
I have had the architects plans for 5 years and I get them out every so often to keep me motivated.
Cecily...
Sounds like a warm and wonderful dream ,,. I hope you get there one day!
Cameron...
Probably by the time you get to use thm all of the building codes will have changed!
I'll be leaving the great state of California as it is cost prohibited to be a builder owner. Too many "nuts" and not enough Squirrels.
Cameron...
And will we be returning to my favorite place on earth, the Volunteer State?
My dreams continually change but I believe a very small town would be the setting.
Richard that is the kind of neighbors that I want when I retire, not to close and not to far.
Mandi...
And will you be staying in the Southwest?
Don...
It's nice to have someone within 5 miles ... just in case! lol
Richard...a great goal! My wife had the house and 60 acres when we got married, and I brought it up to date. We spend a fair amount of time on my own 129 acres that we hunt, ski and just hike on. You need a dream, and I do like yours!
That may be in the plans Richard but I ain't Volunteering for a damn thing.
You know Richard I've never lived anywhere but Arizona. I'm not so sure that I want to live anywhere else. Natural disasters and huge bugs are just really not my style. And our firearm laws are much less strict.
