As most of my readers already know, I love to take pictures. Years ago, I would not even use that word ..."pictures." I was a photographer, and I took photographs. Photographer was the science of using controlled light that passed through glass and chemically reacted on a thin film to produce an image.
I could always feel that process taking place. I could sense the shutter opening and the light passing through the layers of glass and then through a variable opening until it focused upside down on a section of film.
But that has changed with the advent of the digital camera. The process is no longer chemical, it's electrical. And instead of molecules reacting and changing, an impulse is sent that is converted into an amazing series of ones and zeroes, that when interpreted, can be displayed as a picture.
But I still use the same glass I bought in 1985, the same filters, and I still force the light through a tiny opening onto a CCD sensor. And although I fell as if I am cheating a bit, the resulting picture is still a treasure to behold.
Maybe it's not a photograph is the truest sense of the word, but I like it!

Gorgeous! Thanks for the lesson.
Hi Richard. Lovely picture.
Ken
Mel...
Thanks! That's one I grabbed yesterday on my trip!
Ken...
Thanks, I appreciate it!
I do believe that is my favorite picture I have seen of yours RW. Looks very peaceful & beautiful. KM
Richard, You can call them photographs or pictures I don't mind either one because you do an awesome job as a photographer or picture taker. :)
Richard, In my opinion, it's the composition that makes it a photograph, not the equipment. Ansel Adams black and white prints are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen.
Put the most expensive equipment in the hands of an amateur and you get a picture.
Wow! I am speechless.
Richard, That picture photograph is phenomenal. I'm jealous of your skills.
Well, electronic or chemical, they seem to come out great for you either way my friend.
Kristin...
I took this series of the Oconaluftee River on the way out of the park. I started working and moving downstream, trying t catch just the right water movement. I got so involved that at one point I realized my shoe was underwater and I had to drive home with a soaking wet foot!
Lori...
I was actually pleased with this shot, and I am rarely satisfied! ;)
Richard I...
Then I would call this a photograph based on your definition! THX
What a shot! And thanks for the lesson in photography. I had to start smiling as the definition started :~)
Mel...
And I was wet-footed, but even though I was very tired by the time I got to this shot I was determined to make it count!
Cameron...
I just go after them a little harder, like a professional fisherman going after bass!
JL...
I am getting the hang of the digital SLR body now!
Terri...
Thanks for the kind words! I used to be a film snob but not any more! lol
Richard, your Photos are indeed extraordinary. Old school or not though, it is still science, just a different kind.
Nice thoughts
Bo
Richard, there are times I still miss my old SLR as I still stay film produces a better image but producing a quality photo still takes skill... and that, my friend, you have plenty of.
Hi Richard -- I love your photos and have enjoyed seeing them. I miss using my SLR -- and I still want a darkroom, as I love black and white and the thrill of seeing the image emerge. Changing the digital color to B&W with a click just doesn't make it for me! There are probably things I can learn about it though! Digital vs film -- plusses for each! Instant gratification on the one hand, a little more creative control for the other perhaps. Both a process. thanks for the post.
Richard, I agree. I remember shooting cans upon cans of film just to learn how to take good photographs. I still have all my glass from years ago as I made the transition from my f3 to the digital that I now use... There is STILL an art to getting into your right mind though...
Thanks for making the effort. It was certainly worth it, if you didn't catch a cold. Here is the thing, I don't think you can top it! I can't wait to see you try.
Bo...
I thought about that ... and you are right! I would have to think that in the mid 19th Century that photography was beyond belief for most people!
Jesse...
I still love film, but it's a dying art. I am somewhat consoled with the familiarity of my lenses. Thanks, as always. for the kudos. I really appreciate it!
Alexandra...
Maybe, in a way, film photography has been elevated as an art form? I have some other thoughts about that but I will leave that for anothe post!
Michael...
Ooh, I always wanted an F3, but I stuck with my 8088 for 21 years! It did a good job, and the controls were amazingly high-tech for its day! THX.
Mel...
That's what drives me. I know there is a better shot out there, somewhere, some day!
