We have just had our first cold snap here in the south. Patches of scattered frost and I'm having to think about turning on the furnace (it's freezing in here!) Fall is in full force and winter is just around the corner.
Back in the days of self-sufficiency, fall was a time to complete preparations for the winter ahead. It was necessary to make sure that enough food and fuel was "put up" to survive the lean months ahead. Survival depended on a care allocation of resources spread out over the entire year!
Do we think about our lives and are businesses that way? Do we have a complete understanding that we have to plan for the months ahead? Even if times right now are not as productive as we want them to be, the obligation to plan ahead is not diminished.
Whatever resources we have must be allocated over the next few months. We are talking about survival here. To not do so would be disastrous.

Time to move to Florida - 85 here today in the Orlando area.
Your title reminded me that I need to put up or shut up. Put up the effort to jump start my business or lose the right to whine when business doesn't pick up. But it is going to pick up. Because I am putting up!
I just got back from NY...it was about 45 but not too windy....made me realize how happy I am to be living in FL for the last 10 yrs. When we came home it was a crisp 80 degrees.
Richard S...
Then I'd have to "put-up" suntan lotion! lol
Susan...
Where the heck have you been? I've missed you for a day or two.
Neal...
Get a sweater! lol
Richard: Weather is beautiful here in the Austin area as well. Cool nights and warm sunny days. From now until December, this area is AMAZING! Hope all is well with you!
Hi Richard. I have loaded up the firewood, stored up extra water and food, and am ready to take on the challenges of the real estate market ahead.
Thanks for writing,
Ken
I've been here! http://activerain.com/blogsview/749587/Sorry-you-are-not-a-winner was just yesterday. There I sat, all alone, with the wrapper from my Hershey bar, and where were you, my handsome Italian friend? Hmmm?
Richard, 32 degrees here last night in Maryland. Not quite a three dog night yet but not too far off either. Good thing because my planning only includes two dogs so far.
I'm ready!
I've moved all of the fishing tackle out of my vehicle and I have loaded the woodbox in case the electricity goes out.
Richard, we saw our first frost yesterday. The roofs were white with frost. Time to prepare for the cold weather here in Northern Virginia. Also time to get going on a new business plan for 2009. Thanks for the reminder.
I am laughing at Richard Iarossi's comment. I had a three dog night once when I was camping. When I woke I thought "So that's what that meant!" You have to forgive me for being such a youngin'.
This morning it was 65 and the window was open. Not bad, eh? Not time to turn on the 'heater' yet.
Richard, changing temperaturs in a season are "signs." We have to pay attention to them and prepare or be left out in the cold in our knickers.
Steve,,,
How's it going? There are so many of my AR friends in Austin that I must go there for a visit one of these days! Thanks.
Ken...
What little I have, I must keep some in reserve! Thanks, my friend.
Susan...
Ok I was derelict. What can I say to make it better?
Richard I...
I wonder how many of us can relate to the expression "Three Dog Night?" Oh, by the way, Eli's coming.
Lenn...
Once again, proof positive that you on top of the situation! ;)
Michael...
I NEVER turn on the furnace before November 1. There are going to be some chilly nights ahead!
Mel...
Exactly what it means! lol
Gary...
Our yellow knickers! lol BTW too cold for THAT now.
What do you guys know about cold winters? Do you have them in Ga? Come to Chicago my friend.
Yep, Chicago will show you what a true winter is... although we're experiencing a mild autumn, thus far. I haven't even put the hoses away yet.
(that's one of the things we do, in the north... we put the hoses away, so they won't freeze!)
Larry...
We have them ... for about three days! lol
Alan...
They will freeze here too (guess how I found out?) but the difference is we rarely drop below 20 degrees, although one year we hit 5 below zero and that was cold, cold, cold for GA!
My wife's family is from Savannah... (what a beautiful city) and my mother-in-law always told the story of the one day in her childhood when it snowed. It didn't snow a lot... but just enough that the town kinda shut down... and everyone had the day off.
Richard, it has been very cold here in Myrtle the past few days! Temps have been in low 40's
Good morning Richard-I hope you're doing well. Up early and hard at work I see. I'm up earlier that I was yesterday. Too much to do and too little time in which to to do it. Got to store up the resources for the harsh winter ahead. I forgot to tell you that pic on yesterday's post was awesome(the one with red)It is chilly here as well. I refuse to turn the heat on yet. Don't worry that your posts don't all get featured. Just keep up the great blogging and you'll be fine. Right now I'm just happy when people come by and visit. The rest will come if its meant to.
BTW:I still manage to make it to Ga. even if it's late. What's your excuse for not coming to Va. You can't use that excuse of the blogs button you know. After all if you like people to come visit you, then you need to come visit them, otherwise they might forget how to get to Ga. Then you'll be really cold and in Ga. :-( Just a friendly little reminder for you. :-)))
Great timing Richard. I literally just got off the phone with our mgmt team to forecast the remainder of October and 2008. btw, Cades Cove is absolutely beutiful this time of year. Great photo!
Bo
Morning Richard...I thought it snowed last night! We had a heavy alyer of frost on everything. 26 this morning. It was a quiet and crisp morning...the kind I like when I am out hunting. Planning for the upcoming winter, I have a bit over 1/2 of my wood cut! The local grocery has my larder.
Lenn Great pic
Great post - I know I can get caught up with my "head down" working and lose track of where so many things are - thanks for the reminder. As for winters - I'm hoping for snow in Jersey this year - my poor kids couldn't sled last winter! And I need that excuse to sled too!
Richard, the only ice down here in Miami is in thr Drinks! good luck to all of you in the cold!
Hi Richard, What a cozy looking log cabin. Do you have enough firewood chopped? :-)
Lenn, that is a spanking wood chest. Love the design! Where on earth did you get that?
Richard, excellent talking points. I'm working on exactly what you've just said and am in a race against time to get my seller relocated as well.
Richard- I hate the chore of putting up but ya just have to do it or you are going to starve and freeze.
I turned the heat on yesterday for the first time this year and it's time for my to begin my Winter advertising campaign to start drawing in next Springs buyers.
Alan...
We get snow once every other year or so ... and the town shuts down!
Jer...
That's very chlly near the water!
Pat...
I'm trying to catch up ... had class today, trivia last night ... I've fallen way behind!
Bo...
Way to plan ... and yes, Cades Cove is wonderful in the fall!
Bill...
They say that cutting woods warms yo three times ... once whn you cut it, once whan you split it, and onece when you burn it!
Steve...
I have a feeling that this is going to be a "sledding" year!
Darin...
Watch out for brain freeze!
Shirley...
I wish it were mine, and I use gas logs now! lol
Carolyn...
I know that is a race that you will win!
Lori...
It really is about survival!
JL...
Everything in its season! Thanks, my friend!
going "back home" for Thanksgiving in Rochester NY. Looking forward to seeing a little snow.
Richard - another good analogy. I refuse to turn the heat on until November though. After all, this is the south. My putting up will be fine tuning my business plan and getting my website in order, as well as putting as many localism posts up as I can.
Richard: We should all store a few nuts from every paycheck in the good times for the lean times. If nothing else, we'd all be facing a more secure retirement.
Ron...
Oh, that lake effect snow! Have a great visit!
Mike...
I can do it all, if I out my mind to it ... can't I?
Chris Ann...
I stopped spending foolishly years ago, thank goodness or I would have been a recent casualty.
Wow -- I remember getting preserves ready, pickles etc. It was a time to make sure we had planned for the months ahead. Perhaps all of this economic uncertainty will make people start to get back to the basics!
Joan...
And there is something very comforting about self-sufficiency!
Richard,
Turning on the what? Furnace you say? Not familiar with that. :)
Steve
Steve...
Are you saying it stays warm where you live? lol
