The Georgia Department of Transportation and the Garden Club of Georgia have teamed up to provide Georgia travelers with a beautiful display of wildflowers along Georgia Highways.
Highway beautification is the legacy of Lady Bird Johnson, First Lady and wife of President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Mrs., Johnson loved the wildflowers of Texas, and dedicated her efforts to adding beauty to America's roadsides with landscaping and the removal of excess numbers of billboards.
The Highway Beautification Act was passed in 1965, and sojourners have since benefited from the results of the legislation. Today, our Interstate Highway System is the most beautiful network of roads in the world.
And our Georgia roadsides have embraced the wildflower philosophy. Not only are the flowers stunningly beautiful, but they also require less mowing and maintenance. So the gorgeous colors are "green" too!
It's always been said that getting there is half of the fun. Never has that been more true than now, thanks to all the people that made highway beautification a realty!

The flowers are gorgeous! It takes a lot of no how to do wildflowers. I've tried it with seeds and I grew a lot of weeds. I'm sure it took a lot of people, a lot of time with a lot of knowledge and work to get the results I see in your picture.
Hi Richard. Beautiful picture and great localism post.
Thanks for writing,
Ken
There are a lot of wild flowers by the roadside in Texas in the spring. Not so many this time of year. Thanks for sharing the pics.
I didn't know that, but it sure is pretty. All roadsides should have wildflowers and I bet it doesn't even cost that much.
Hello Richard I hope you had a good day. Inspiration hit again I see, this is Blog #2 for the day. Keep them coming. I'll do my best to leave you a good smiling comment on this blog so you don't think I'm mad at you, which I'm not, just so you know. I left you a second comment on the blog you did this morning explaining that in greater detail. I love flowers and that is a beautiful photo. They plant flowers along the roadsides here in Virginia too. Lots and lots of buttercups or daffodils which ever the name for them in Ga. Really beautiful. I think it is a great thing Lady Bird started all those years ago. It sure is nicer to see flowers than just grass. Makes the drive on the highways much more colorful and bright. So how many posts do you need to do now to reach your goal, you got just 78 days to go but who's counting. lol See ya next time in the rain. KB,KS and always KTF.
BTW-Was this a good comment instead of a terse one(I had to look up that word, just so you know)lol. See ya
Susan...
Actually, they developed this road mix for late Spring-Early summer, and then another for late summer -fall, that only takes a simple tilling and seed scattering twice a year. as opposed to mowing every two weeks! The seeds are donated by the garden club so it's a win-win!
Ken..
Thanks for the kind words!
Mel...
I took this photo yesterday, it's a beautiful fall planting!
Joyce...
They say it costs the same or less than mowing!
Pat...
So, after you looked it up did you get the joke? lol I have a whole story about the word terse that I'll save for Christmas, as it has holiday overtones! Thanks again for this wonderful un-terse comment!
What are all these taxes and tolls that I am paying for? We only get them once a year. Thanks for sharing or I wouldn't have seen them otherwise.
Keith,
Thanks for the post--great picture. This inspires me to take my camera and go shoot some scenes of the fall here in Clayton in Johnston county, North Carolina.
Have a Great Day

Simply beautiful!
So Beautiful I wonder if my allergies would simply go off the deep end and kill me. But really cool to have local shots for your web spaces.
Mel...
There are only two certainties in life ...death and Texas! Tell them to get the tillers going!
Linda...
Clayton, Clayton ...Hmmm ...I don't think I've ever been there. Durham yes, and the Duke Gardens!
Shirley...
Thanks! I like the way this one turned out!
Steve...
Oh goodness, that's why I couldn't breathe last night ...REALLY!
You got that right! Dreaming of Seattle though...
Mel...
I have never been there. As a matter of fact, I haven't been much on anywhere. My daughter, however, has been to Seattle and Austin and Salt Lake and Vancouver and Italy and Ireland and if I traveled every day of my life I could not catch up to her. Seattle is one of her favorite destinations!
I have been many places and downtown Seattle has to be my favorite. I will admit I liked it better than Dallas, Austin, or Houston. Did I just say that? Shush!
Ok Richard-Now, I know you're picking on me but that's OK. I have a nasty headache again, so NO, I didn't get the joke. Are you going to spill it now or make me wait til Christmas.
This is the definition's I found in my new dictionary
Terse-Smoothly elegant, polished. Devoid of superfluity(don't know what that word is either)but I'm going to look that up too. I feel like I'm back in school(Wait I am back in school)I must have missed those days. Short, brusque, concise.
So was I short & brusque or smoothly elegant and polished? (I choose the later)Actually maybe I just want to keep you on your toes so I changed my commenting style just to throw you off. (lol)
You know I can hearing you laughing all the way from Ga. Sleep well my friend and I'll talk to you tomorrow. I'm turning in and I suspect you already have and are dreaming about your next blog.
Richard-Beautiful flowers. We have them a long side some of our highways too. I always get enjoyment at seeing them. Thanks for sharing.
Another stunning photo, Richard. We have wild irises and fireweed along the highways here that are just beautiful.
I looked all over but I couldn't find any Kudzu in that picture.
Terry Edwards in sunny SC
Terry said Kudzu - uuggh - I hate that stuff! Anyhow, NC has some beautiful highways as well - it is always such a bright and refreshing sight to see them after a while on a hum-drum trip on the highway! Gorgeous pic!
Richard - thanks for clearing that up for me. I have enjoyed the roadside wildflowers but have wondered how they got there.
I've traveled across the country and I must say that the wildflowers in the south are the best!
We are seeing some of that beautification happening up here also. It is so nice to see some color during the summer instead of the green and brown grasses.
As always a beautiul picture and story to make me smile this morning. Thanks Richard!
Great looking flowers Richard, we have some along the roads here, but not nearly as many as I would like.
Pat...
All I meant is that it was 6 lines instead of 12 lines long, but I am glad you learned a new word!
Laura W...
The make the trip much more pleasant!
Terry...
There is plenty of it around!
Leesa...
I believe that North Carolina was on the cutting edge of the wildflower planting. The highways in the mountains are beautiful!
Richard- What beautiful flowers...they look like cosmos. I have grown them before but around here the deer come and eat everything down to the nubs! I planted some golden mums the other day in my flower box next to my door and had to sprinkle them with cayenne powder so they would leave them alone. Seems to be working so far but it has to be re-applied each time it rains! OK until I forget!
Hi Richard-I thought that is probably what you must have been talking about. I should never comment and blog when I have a nasty headache. It takes longer for me to catch on to things when the brain isn't clear. Not all was lost I learned a new word, actually 2. You know you told me I gave the best comments. I'll see if I can do that in 6 lines instead of 12. Hope you had a good day. Take care and talk to you later.
Lori...
I believe that they are Cosmos. There are some place along the highway where they go on for MILES! It's very impressive! Thanks.
Pat...
You could be succinct! lol
Richard-YOU THINK! SUCCINCT FOR YA-LOL-
Another great post from the famous Richard Weisser. Please keep posting I injoy your post very much.
Edward
Am I imagining stuff or has Edward been sending a lot of these emails to you Richard. I only see one here, but I have had numerous emails in my inbox.
Susan, he declared it Richard Weisser day. I am game!
Susan...
It is time for an intervention!
Mel...
Game on!
