On Sunday I had the chance to visit one of our favorite area spots. Less than an hour from our house in Sharpsburg is Warm Springs, Georgia. It was here that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt came to seek treatment for poliomyelitis. He fell in love with the area, and constructed the only home he ever owned, known here as the Little White House.
One of the President's favorite spots was Dowdell's Knob, a small rock outcropping on the side of Pine Mountain that has a great view of the lowlands below, and always a nice breeze, even on a warm day.
It is somewhat humbling to sit in exactly the same spot that the President of the United States did during the greatest crisis our country ever faced. During World War II, President Roosevelt made many trips to Warm Springs and many decisions that affected the destiny of our great land were made in the area, and I know that many of them were made at Dowdell's Knob.
The President was also very proactive is designing the state park that bears his name, and the Civilian Conservation Corps was instrumental in constructing the facilities. His legacy remains to this day in the little town of Warm Springs, a fantastic mix of history and natural beauty.
Warm Springs is about an hour's drive south of Atlanta. For more details, you can visit the official Warm Springs website.

I have heard of it, butnever seen it. Being there has to be pretty cool! Thanks Richard
Bo...
What is cool is when it's so close to home that it's "ordinary." We have been there hundreds of times, and it's almost like we are true sharing it with the famous President!
That is a very interesting piece of history. Thanks for sharing the experience of being there. The pics are awesome.
Richard: I wish everyone could have joined you on your trip to Dowdell's Knob. Seems that there may be some solace there that this financial crisis won't break us all.
Good Morning Richard-With your blogs not only am I having the pleasure of reading it and all your awesome pics(from focusing on one thing). But I'm also getting a very interesting history lesson as well. History wasn't my best subject. But you make it really interesting. Thank you. I know I can always find your next blog when I get up in the morning. That's a very nice way to start the day. You have a very nice day and I look forward to your next blog. Got to get busy doing mine. I caught a cold from my weekend getaway so not feeling so hot so I appreciate even more having your blog to look forward to. Until next time Keep blogging, keep smiling(nice smile BTW) and above all else keep the faith. Your AR friend Pat
I love the countrysides in any area, but I particularly love to walk the streets of the small towns and villages.
You just can't take the country out of the girl.
Mel...
Thanks. To us, it;s one of those places we go when we can't think of anything else!
Chris Ann...
If FDR went there for solace while the entire world was falling apart, it surely would accommodate us in this "minor" crisis! ;)
Pat...
I'll do more on the Little White House as time allows. It's very interesting!
Lenn...
That's part of the experience, some great shops and restaurants, but that's for another time!
Richard...I have said befreo and will say it again, your area has a wealth of history. I commend you for knowing a lot of it!
I had actually read about the Little White House before and found it fascinating. If big cities are the pulse of America, then small towns are the lifeblood. Great post as always.
Richard- You are the photographer! I just love the colors of the fall leaves. The fact that FDR came to this spot to regroup makes sense to me. What a place to clear your mind and make decisions.
Richard-
Very nice images and a great history lesson, Thanks and keep up the good work!
Bill...
I am a history buff and I enjoy learning more about it.
Rich...
I will be doing a full post on the Little White House soon! Thanks,
Lori...
Thanks, there is a lot of good places around here for photos, and history, and relaxation!
Bryant...
I will, and thank you for the comment!
Richard,
I'm looking forward to your blog on the Little White House. Along with that , or maybe a a stand alone would be the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. The place has an unbeleivable history and is one of the premier rehab facilities in the country.
I love that part of the state.
