When ancient man first harnessed the basic concepts of architecture, it was determined early on that sound engineering depended on symmetry. The balanced distribution of the structure's weight required that diametrically opposed forces be equalized in order to maintain stability.
The random shapes. hues, and forms that occur in nature gave way to the man-made designs incorporating straight lines and opposing arcs. It was a practical method of creating structures that would endure over long periods of time, and it was also aesthetically appealing to the human eye!
When looking for artifacts, one can use symmetry as a basic test to determine if an object is a man-made piece or not. When we create, we have a tendency to employ symmetry in our design.
Nearly every room in every house ever constructed is symmetrical. Nearly every piece of furniture that we place in our homes is symmetrical. Our plates, forks and spoons are also symmetrical. We have an inborn affinity for symmetry that cannot be denied.
So in a world consisting of juxtaposition and chaos, a little symmetry goes a long way towards defining our uniqueness and humanity. It's built-in characteristic that cannot be overlooked or ignored.

I never thought about it until I started watching 'Monk'. Why is it so important yet the concept escaped me for years? Silly, but true.
Mel...
I was just telling a friend about Monk. She is OCD and I told her she would love it, since this is what makes Adrian such a great detective!
Richard, also the greatest example of symmetry is the human body which has a great advantage in its design with all the backup systems. Even the brain and heart have left and right sides.
I have severe OCD and the show Monk, which I have seen twice, seems to make mine worse.
Gary...
I actually thought about Da Vinci's sketches of the human body when I wrote this post ... just didn't figure out how to merge it into the post!
JL...
If you were not already married, I'd hook you two up. She's a catch!
@ JL, I never took you to be OCD....MPD maybe ;-))
Richard, now I know why I walk funny when I have toooooooo much wine, something is not symmetrical.
Richard - both symmetry and randomness have there place. While symmetry is structurally sound, balanced and lends the appearance of stability, the asymetrical is often more aesthetic. Landscapers often group, or recommend groupings of trees and shrubs in odd numbers, 3's, 5's, etc because these groupings tend to be more pleasing to the eye. Personally, I like both.
Monk just keeps getting better every time I see it.
Mike- The landscaper principle is used in Feng Shui. I perfer it.
Richard...I think that we have found over the years that symmetry is also easier to work with. 90 degree angles are easier to fit and to minimize scrap. (A comment from grandpa!)
Richard-I'm very much enjoying your posts. I love all the pics you always include in them. To comment on your post about America surviving worse is so true. As you look back at history there are so many examples of this The Great Depression is one and a much more recent one of course is 9/11. We have our problems but we our strong when the chips are down. "United We Stand" "Divided We Fall". Look forward to your next post and hope you're still doing your daily Sudoku puzzles(in ink). I'm not at the pen stage(pencil for me). Take care and keep up the wonderful blogging.

Richard Just thought I'd let you know I hadn't logged in when I commented on this so the one right above without the name of course is me as well. That never happened before. Learned something new today. That means my day isn't lost as I believe every day you learn something new is a day well spent.
Who wrote that comment?
Oh sure, everybody has someone to set me up with now that I am already married.
Don...
Well that can happen to the best of us, be careful my friend!
Mike...
A "formal" garden is generally symmetrical, while an informal one is not. I guess that symmetry conveys quite a bit to the eye instantaneously!
Mel...
I love Monk more each time too. And I took a CE class in Feng Shui once and liked it very much!
Bill...
Grandpa was very wise ... all of these roof lines now cost a lot of money!
Pat...
Glad to have you logged in and identified! And thanks for reading my posts and being so kind to comment. I really appreciate it more than you will ever know, it keeps me going!
Mel...
Pat did, she wasn't logged in! This is a public post so I thought it could be just anybody, but thank goodness it was Pat!
JL...
Ain't life just like that?
Richard- So like Monk are we all obsessive compulsive as well as symmetrical. Scary thoughts!!!
I have to have things even or grouped you know so there are two groups. Oddly enough I am one of the most unorganized people you will ever meet (at home....not the office).
By the way JL my husband didn't wear a wedding ring for the first 3 years of our marriage and when he started wearing it he had girls chasing after him for months!! What does this tell me? Getting married=eligible women!
I agree with Mandi. Anthony had many female friends that were just 'friends' until we got married. He received cards and emails for months afterward. He said, "What the hell?" He had been single for ten years. He has the best 'bad date' stories I have ever heard. It must be because he was 'out there' for so long.
I have another story so let me know when you are ready.
Melody- I read Richard's jacked post that inspired the decking underwear story. The last story had me laughing out loud!! I can't wait to hear the next one.
Hi Richard.....I seen Melody has commented so stopped by to see why
Lori...
Well, we notice a room that is out of square, or pictures on the wall that are crooked, or light fixtures that aren't centered. We don't think about it, it's automatic!
Mandi...
I have heard that from a few people. I have never worn a wedding ring and it hasn't worked for me ... I mean ... er ... um ... never mind! lol
Mel...( and Mandi)
Every woman wants what she can't have!
Hi Mandi...
I am having trouble keeping up but I am doing my best!
