We know all of the mountain analogies. Mountains have always been considered as obstacles, something blocking our destiny that needs to be conquered. And we all know that it takes hard work and fortitude to get to the mountaintop. That goes without saying!
But what is often left unsaid is that the view from the bottom of the range is pretty good too! It's the valleys that collect the rain and the fertile soil making them most suitable for excellent farming and human habitation.
The coves nestled amidst the peaks offer protection from raging tempests and surging storms. Our pioneer ancestors sought both the safe harbor and the abundant opportunity for agriculture offered by these low valleys and sheltered coves. It was the destination of choice.
And what's on the other side of the mountain anyway? Why another valley of course! Maybe it is better, or maybe it is worse than your current situation. You don't know until you get there. So, is it necessary to climb EVERY mountain that blocks our path?
I think that we first need to examine where we are at right now! Who knows, it might be just where we want to be!

Richard - sometimes you gotta climb 'em just because they are there. And remember, it is in the valleys and gullies that the cold and frost collects in winter. The grass is always greener over the septic tank. Another great shot my friend.
Richard....great wisdom! I'm certainly not on top of the mountain, and I do like the view up there! Air is fresh and clean. I think we just have to describe the valley as you do...not a bad place, but perhaps where the best crops can grow!
Guess I best go plant some seeds!
Richard, very good analogy.
Mike...
I just felt cantankerous today and that I'd take an controversial position! lol No, it's Saturday, and I just didn't feel like anything too heavy this morning! And, it's football season!!! Have a great weekend, my friend.
Thom...
The view is fabulous and the wind is horrendous!!! I spent a night or two in the howling gusts of the high elevations ... it's fun, until you try to get some sleep! Enjoy the rest of the weekend, I may be in town for the Braves game tonight!
Well put, thanks for your insight.
Hi Richard. Another beautiful picture. Good point too. We need to enjoy the ride. Not always focus on the destination!
Ken
Richard, Great post... brings to mind the book "The Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan.
Yes, another awesome picture to go with more wisdom. My motivation for climbing is usually only powered by my desire to prove 'I can'.
Richard: What a great shot. You can almost feel the crisp autumn air. Your psot does reveal the fact that there are always two ways to see things. The valleys are certainly under-rated.
I find myself always determined to strive for the top of the mountain...the only problem is that once I reach the top, there is just a bigger mountain ahead to climb...
If we don't take risks we'll never know what could have been. Setting goals has become a part of my ever changing life but stopping to smell the flowers even more...
In the long run, Richard you are right...the climber doesn't alsways have the time to look around and see what is within the reach, what they may have jogged loose!
Nice photo Richard...never a mountain too high for me to climb...but the question is what's at the top waiting.
Richard, it is a great point about the surrounding areas of the mountain. The climb up, the other side, living in the valley. Life is full of ALL these parts, not just standing on the peak. Such tremendous color in your photo as well.
Tim and Pam...
Thanks, I appreciate it.
Lyn...
Why thank you!
Ken...
Sometimes things are fine just where we are! Thanks.
Shirley...
I have never read it, but I need to. There, it's on my list! THX.
Mel..
But we all know you can, so you don'y have to prove it to us!
Chris Ann...
They're easier to get to there and they have their good points! Notice anything unusual about this sentence?
Jer...
And you can only see the next mountain from the higher ground. You're right, excellent observation. (Another reason to stay in the valley! lol)
Sally...
It's a dichotomy, that's for sure. But both lines of thought are correct!
Bill...
And often the climber will never stop, no matter which goals are attained!
Richard, Just as the valley is a great place and the coves are great places to be safe from the storms the view from the top is ofter very spectacular. I may need to recoup in the valley but my desire is to head back up to the top of the next mountain.
Thank you my friend for something I needed to hear.
Richard, the views from both the bottom and top are equally spectacular... each in their own way. Wherever we are, we should stop and take it all in because we might not be on that same path again.
Another great post accompanied by a gorgeous photo. It's Saturday and today I like my valley... maybe I'll get to that mountain on Monday!
Hi Richard- I love the valleys as well as the mountains. Just don't put me in the dry desert without any water!
I strive to climb the mountains set before me just to prove I can but after enjoying the view for a short time I get bored and must go for the next one.
A D D I guess.
Neal...
I guess you have to get there to fond out! Thanks.
Gary...
This photo was taken at the Campbell Overlook in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I was lucky to get both good color and some early October Snow on the mountaintop. I shoot from this overlook almost every year but some days are so much better than others!
Don...
You're welcome. On many of my trips I climbed to the top of the mountain. and on others, I was satified from the look from below!
Jesse...
And that's why you and I always have an SLR at the ready! THX.
