I'm caught between a rock and a hard place. What does that mean exactly? Of course, I know what a rock is, but what is a hard place? Or should I ask, where is a hard place?
Does it mean I'm caught between a rock and another rock? Or am I stuck between a rock and something harder than a rock? What would be harder than a rock?
I mean, marble is a rock and that's pretty hard. Granite is a rock and is harder still. Heck, even a diamond is a rock and that's about as hard as you can get.
So is a hard place less hard than a rock but still somewhat firm?
So if a hard place is not as hard as a rock, then I should choose the hard place over the rock? So if I have made up my mind, I am not really caught anymore so this whole exercise is somewhat meaningless.
So I won't use that expression anymore. Instead I'll say "Hell's Bells." Wait a minute, wouldn't the fire melt the bells?

Richard, my son Max is very literal. When he was little, any time anyone used an "expression", he would get all worried. Like... we are going to jump off at the next exit while traveling down I95. He shouted, "we have to jump out at the next exit"? I'll say to you what we have been saying to him for 12 years.... It's just an expression! Playing mediator between my two sons has given me a great appreciation for this expression. I truly know what it feels like to be between a rock and a hard place. It's a lose-lose situation!
Such questions you pose! Is the initial rock granite? If the hard place is diamond, do you have enough room to turn around and do you have a drill with a diamond bit that you can cut yourself out? Are you there now? Should we call the fire department? Do you think the jaws of life could extract you? Do you have enough food and water?
I love Susan's description of explaining "expressions" to her son. I can just see him with his hand on the door handle...hopefully he was in his car seat!
OK, I need to call it a night!
Susan...
Yes Mom, I'll listen to what you say! ;) I was trying to make you laugh, not to make you feel morose. C'mon, smile for me! Ah, there you go! Now get some sleep!
Tamara...
You know how to play the game, and you do it well! Thanks for joining in on the fun.
Glad to have found a fun place to land. How is your market???
The fires of Hell are generally depicted as red. Many people claim to have been to Hell and back. So, we can safely assume that if the fire was a different color, someone would have spoken up by now.
The hottest red flame burns 1830 degrees farenheit. Materials such as aluminum and bronze have low melting points. Thus, if you had a set of big brass bells and thought you could take on the fires of hell, you are going to be sorely mistaken. Brass melts at 1724 degrees. Your big brass bells would become Great Bells of Fire. However, if you have a titanium set, you will be ok.
LOL now this should be featured! What a great exercise.
Richard....First off...love the picture. My In-laws are coming next week till the 22nd (oh yes....that long) and I WILL have camera in tow at all times, looking fof that next great picture. Problem is, when I download them to the laptop, I forget where I filed them!!!! You should see how long I look for things when blogging...frustrates the heck out of me!
How's this for an expression...I picked it up off of one of my Google Alerts:
"Well Butter My Bowhonkers and call me a biscuit."
I'm afraid to even ask what the real meaning could be here.....
thanks for the fun in thoughts. great post
Richard - I have often been caught between the proverbial rock and the hard place. That hard place seems to be everywhere and yet I don't see it until that rock starts coming at me.
Tamara...
We are is a slow market. even short sales and soreclosures are tough, but there are plenty of deals for those ready to buy! Thanks for asking.
Erik...
You're killing me man, way too early in the morning to laugh this hard! Thanks for playing along! Now where do I find a uranium bell?
Jessica...
I wanted to use this photo so bad and the idiom jumped into my brain! Thnaks, I appreciate it!
Thom...
Three weeks? Now, that is an excercise in patience, but I'll bet you all get along famously! And I have never heard the biscuit phrase but I love it! I MUST use that at the office this week!
Richard, Too many questions this morning but, let me add one more to your short list. When asked how are you doing you reply "Fair to Midlin'" What does that mean anyway?
Mike, I think I found that same place in New Jersey. Almost a nowhere to turn type spot.
I try to avoid the rocks and the hard places, but that doesn't mean that I don't like being in the middle of things.
Rick...
You're welcome. I needed something lighter after that heavy stuff!
Mike...
There are more rocks coming my friend!
Don...
Your guess is a good as mine! lol and thanks.
Nancy...
I believe that New Jersey has a lot of hard places! lol and thanks.
JL...
You said that just right, my friend!
I have a knack for coming up with the right thing to say. A conversation with my wife when she's angry is like walking through a minefield so I gotten good at choosing my words wisely.
JL...
It's funny all of the changes that have happened since we've started doing this. Seems like the old gang rarely gets together anymore.
I've noticed that the few times I have been on here lately, that most of the old crew isn't around here.
JL...
Mel checks in almost every day, Jesse has been on other adventures. Amanda pops in once in a while and Cameron is busy with short-dales and REO properties.
Cameron has recently entered the building my friend.
Uranium - maybe you'll have to take a trip to Iraq or Iran - not sure which - but I hear they are a gathering it...
I hope you have a rested holiday!!
April...
Thanks, and hopefully, we all have more business soon!
