The days are getting shorter, and summer is waning. August is nearly half over, and soon the declining hours of daylight will lead to that special time of the year.
Fall has always been my favorite season. The transition between heat and cold, between growth and decay, between light and darkness has special, magical qualities.
The show of color is the first thing that comes to mind. The change is subtle over the twelve weeks of autumn, as the leaves change from deep greens to lighter yellows and pinks. Then they are set ablaze into their full splendor of fiery reds, oranges and yellows, followed by the deep purples and eventually, earthy shades of rusts and ochre.
The air clears, allowing for fantastic crisp and clear photography. The aroma in the air is incredible, and the sound of the leaves crunching as you walk is a unique cacophony of cadence and rustling.
But the best thing I like about taking photographs in the fall is the sense of urgency. You have to move quickly to get the shots while the color is peaking. Tomorrow may bring wind and rain, and the opportunity is lost forever.
The way we handle our business is not unlike autumn photography. You have to seize the opportunities while they are ablaze with enthusiasm and interest. The time frame for action is short, you must act quickly and decisively, lest they tumble to the earth and decay into the compost of what might have been.

Hi Richard great posat Autumn is great here too . I think last year was one of the best we had for color
Richard - I prefer spring, but fall/autumn is a very close second. It is my wife's favorite time of the year.
Too much of my business this summer has been hitting the compost pile.
I love it as well. Autumn is a great time for gardening. It cool and refreshing. Its also football season which I love. We travel to the mountains to see all the foliage.
I love the fall too, always have! I'm looking forward to wearing more of my handknit sweaters. :) I'm just finishing one in rich orange and rust tones, very autumn colors.
Many of this year's buyers have bought, if they wanted to move before the start of school. So now, I'm looking forward to a bustling fall with buyers who didn't have to meet that deadline this year. I'll be representing a cute condo development perfect for first-time owners.
Fall and spring are great times of the year in Ohio. I do enjoy fall but never look forward to what follows. I'd love to become a snowbird and go south for the winter.
Fall......it is 90 plus degrees here still most days.....we see fall around November......
August into Setember is the changing of the seasons...I go from Fishing season to Hunting season. LOL. But you are right, as the days get shorter, the leavees change and the most color around shows up for weeks. With the shorter days, the animals starat to put away their larder for the winter and that includes us Human animals up here in the Norht.
Richard,
This is a great analogy. Well done. The same is true about sunsets. Often by the time you get your camera the moment is lost.
Steve
Why is it that lost opportunities are often the ones that we remember?? Why not focus on what you DO have rather than what you dont...? To me, that seems a far more logical path and a far better use of your time and mental capacity...lol.
Charlie...
Last year was good in the mountains, but the year before last was the best ever here in Newnan. I have a lot of photos of both that I will be using in the upcoming weeks! Thanks.
Mike...
I enjoy the flowers of Spring, but not the pollen and sneezing! Spring is my second favorite, but fall is for hiking and photography! Thank you!
Laura...
I like gardening in the fall. I used to do fall veggies too ... broccoli, turnip greens, collards and Brussels sprouts! Not so much anymore! THX
Suzanne...
With a nice warm model to hibernate during the long Ohio winter, i hope! ;)
Richard: Autumn is my favorite time of year too. The chill that starts to come into the air. The leaves changing. I just love it. And you are right about that sense of urgency and seizing opportunities. This business is all about forward movement. You can't be stagnant.
Easily my favorite also, Richard. Time for a weeknd dr9ve through the Blue Ridge Pkwy or Great Smokey Mtn. Pakwy....absolutely stunning!
Thanks for the anticipation as I sit here feeling a nice 70 degree breeze. Almost Here!
Bo
Jon...
Ohio gets all kinds of weather ... blistering heat to tornadoes to freezing cold winters. Why not head South?
Julie...
Here to0. In Newnan I can photograph leaves into December ... but you have to know where to look! ;)
Bill...
And don't forget football season! You gotta watch something in hunting camp!
Steve...
And rainbows as well. THX
Clint...
Once again you made a rush to judgement. I never said I had ANY mental capacity! lol
Richard- I lived in Iowa for 6 years back in the 80's. During that time period I grew to hate Fall because I knew Winter was just around the corner and I absolutley hated winters there. So those feelings have carried over to this day. Spring and Summer are my favorite seasons.
Chris Ann...
No, you must move quickly, or all is lost! I can't wait to start my fall sets this year, I love it!
Bo...
Those are two of my favorite places to be in the fall, as well as the North Georgia Mountains!
Lori...
It's the last gasp of nature before succumbing to the bleak grays and browns of winter! Thanks for adding to the bank of opinions!
Richard,
What a great analogy on urgency in our business. Thank you sir for the friendly reminder that we also need to be more like the ant too.
Strike while the iron is HOT! Always great advice.
Richard, I love autumn photos. The colors are so beautiful. I'll miss autumn in the north this year.
