Wow, it's hard to believe that July is almost gone. Here in Newnan Georgia, the kids start school next week. College football is just a month away, and soon I will be making my plans to visit both the North Georgia Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for my annual fall photo fiesta!
I love taking photographs in the fall for a number of reasons. First, the colors are amazing. The palette changes from day to day and region to region. And here in the Southeast I can find good Autumn color from late September through December.
Second, the air is cooler and crisper, allowing for longer hikes into wilderness areas with lower levels of exhaustion. I can still do ten miles a day with ease, and can push it to fifteen if the trails are not too steep and rocky.
One of the most common questions I get is "When will the leaves change color?" Many factors affect the change of the leaves and the intensity of the fall foliage color. Sunlight, elevation, precipitation, temperature, wind and many other factors make it impossible to determine not only when the leaves will change, but also where the color "hotspots" will be in any given year.
So you'll just have to go out and find the best photographs. And along the way, you just might find yourself having a spiritual revelation just by observing the wonders of creation!

Note: Even my own wife accused me of doctoring this photo in an image editor, but is was good light, good film, and good filtering that produced this unbelievable shot!

Richard, that is one thing we just don't have here in Miami, Stunning when they change colors, I will watch a palm leave fall from the tree and try not to get hit by a ripe falling coconut!
Richard: Wow, what a great picture! I am jealous of your photographic skills! Thanks for posting this! Steve
Fall is my favorite season of all! I love your photo!!! I also can't believe that summer is 2/3 gone!
I'm with Steve, I was actually just showing my husband your blogs saying "This man takes the most amazing photographs". You have a fabulous talent. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. I agree that fall is an absolutely stunning season. October is one of my favorite months of the year.
Darin...
That's funny, there's a post in there somewhere! Go for it.
Steve...
I was driving down the parkway and saw this shot and pulled over and wham! Even though it was film, I knew I had a "keeper!"
Pam..
It is waning fast ... I love Autumn but I could only like winter in Idaho! Thanks!
Stacey-Ann
Thanks for the compliments. I will be posting a ton of Fall photos soon, as it is my specialty. BTW my wife accused me of doctoring the color in this pic in PhotoShop, but it was good light, good film, and good filtering that produced this glorious image!
Richard: The kids go back to school awfully early where you live! I was on the "Back to School after Labor Day and out in Early June" plan as a kid. That autumn chilll was always a hint in the air when the first day of school arrived. Forever more, that autumn chill reminds me of back to school.
It is hard to believe it is almost autumn, but it is truly one of my favorite times. I grew up in Virginia, where we went to school later and got out later, but lived in Alabama and Georgia for a while, so got used to the different school schedule. It just doesn't seem possible it is almost time for football. To this day, many, many years after graduation, I still get very nostalgic about school starting. Cannot wait to see your fall photos!!
Chris Ann...
We're not on year-round, but close to it. They get plenty of long breaks throughout the year so it's 180 days just as most other areas. I went to school in Pittsburgh and the Day after Labor day was the usual for me too!
Susan...
I can't wait to bring the photos out, dust them off, and get them online! I have been a leaf-chaser for many years, and have been blessed to achieve some notoriety on the subject. I'll have to dig up some of those articles too!
Thanks for both of you for sharing your pleasant memories.
I will be glad when Summer is completely over. I could use a break from the heat, a suit and tie at 100 degrees is rough.
I am with you Richard. Fall is a colorful time of year. Also my next passion starts...HUNTING!
Unfortunately, we don't have many great trees that have foliage changes...Only have some pines and palms.
Richard - one of the things I missed most (one of the few things) while living on the west coast was the changing colors of the foliage. There were some small areas, like Levenworth, WA but nothing on the scale of the east coast. Try New England if you want some really spectacular panoramas of color in the fall.
This might be an early year here because of the continuing drought.
Richard,
The areas that you are going to are absolutely awesome at color change time. I keep thinking that I may just make a trip down there around Chattanooga around early October. If I make it down I will give your a call.
