The summer Olympic Games in Beijing China are just a few short weeks away. As a resident witness to the games hosted by Atlanta in 1996, I can tell you that there is still a lot left to be done right up until the Opening Ceremonies.
It's hard to even imagine the number of venues needed to host the games. In Atlanta, the entire Olympic Stadium had to be constructed, as well as the Aquatic Center at Georgia Tech, the Velodrome in Stone Mountain, The Equestrian Center in Conyers, The Beach Volleyball Center in Jonesboro, The Canoe and Kayak Center in Tennessee, the Rowing Center on Lake Lanier and the Yachting Venue in Savannah.
Atlanta used many existing facilities too. The Georgia Dome, Atlanta Fulton County Stadium, The Georgia World Congress Center, The Alexander Memorial Coliseum, The Atlanta University Complex and many others.
The Olympic village had to be constructed as well. Enough secure housing had to be provided for the athletes, coaches and support staff for all of the represented countries.
Getting ready for the Olympic Games involve a lot of attention to minutia, and the workers in Beijing are scrambling to complete all of the last minute details. But finished or not, the opening ceremonies will begin on August 8!

Richard, hopefully Beijing is making all the right preparations as Atlanta did. It's got to be a lot of work to pull this off.

Richard, I was in Atlanta for a week during the Olympic games. All I can say is AMAZING the work that needs to be done every night just to clean up after all of the visitors just to get ready for the next day.

It is a very daunting task. i was involved in setting up a local parade one yeare. We had 10 week to organize it. It was almost a full time job at the end and we didn't even have to build anything.
I am very excited about the games! I watched qualifiers so I am stoked!

I can't wait for the Olympics to start!!! I have a ten year old boy that says he wants to be in the Olympics, so it will be fun to watch with him. He is VERY hardworking and talented (runner) so I think it is a possibility for him. I will keep you all posted in 8 or 12 years to see if he makes it!!!!
