Kitten Update ... Little Peyton is doing just fine! Visit the Coweta County Animal Shelter today!

PeytonLast week I reported that we had adopted a little kitten at the Coweta County Animal Shelter. A life saved ... Just in the nick of time! I am happy to tell you that little Peyton is doing just fine after a trip to the vet and a little medical treatment.

While it is impossible to save every animal from euthanasia, it is important to understand what the animal control officers deal with on a daily basis. It's not just animals that are lost, unruly or mistreated. It is also animals that just happened to be born because a pet owner failed to have their animal neutered.

It's an ongoing problem in many communities that can be alleviated by educating citizens about the reproductive capabilities of their dogs and cats. It's a lot easier to correct the problem before it starts.

The Coweta County Animal Shelter is located on Selk Road, which is just off Hospital Road in West Newnan. If you would like to see the animals that need to be adopted, or would enjoy seeing the animals that have found a happy home, visit the Newnan-Coweta County Humane Society and Animal Shelter website today!

The Newnan-Coweta County Humane Society is committed to helping shelter animals find a home. Please contact them if you can help in any way, either by volunteering of by making a donation!

In our family you can currently count 6 rescue kitties (not all in one house) and another one that is still not "officially" adopted but has come under my daughters care.  The only place I would ever get a pet today would be from the local shelter.   We have adopted multiple pure bred cats from the shelter over the years that someone paid hundreds of dollars for from a breeder only to end up unwanted.

Richard, over the years we have rescued several pets from the animal shelter. I don't know why, but they make the best pets. You're right, you can't save them all. If my wife had her way though she would give it a good try.

Cindy...

All of our cats have been adopted as well, but we usually do one at a time ... this is the first time that we will have two in the house at the same time. Our last cat had kidney disease, and he was the most loving, sweetest and smartest cat we ever had! Little Peyton looks a lot like him, I think that's why I picked him out! Good for you for helping God's creatures!

Michael...

I was very pleased this morning to notice that many of the pets that were in the shelter during my visits were adopted as well ... and you're right, they do seem to make the best pats!

Richard ~ In my Dad's yard, he had 9 kittens.  The mother climbed a wooden fence that borders his and his neighbors property one kitten at a time and went under his deck with them.  He had planned to take them to the animal shelter after they got a little older, but after a couple of weeks, the mother came back and led 7 of them out.  The 2 that stayed behind - well, now my parents have two outside cats in addition to their dogs!

Hi Richard

- I think it is great that you rescued her or him

All my live my pets came from shelters

I will never understand why people pay a lot of money to "buy" a pure bread as long as we have these little helpless animals in shelters. Why support breeding more animals if we can not tkae care of the ones we already have.

Richard...it's good to see the soft side of you.  Gald your new addition is doing well.  The last time I had a cat, I took it to the vet for the needed shots.  She asked me if I wanted it fixed...she was a smart lady, I didn't even know it was broken!

Richard....cool cat. I am certain Peyton is happy camper. We all have a responsibility to our fellow animal friends and just as much as we dislike the effects of unnecessary euthanasia, it is aviodable and preventable. Nice follow-up!

Kathy...

Cats are survivors, they do what they must to survive. Mother cats take good care of their kits. I keep mine indoors, well-fed and loved, with plenty of stimulation! Thanks.

Anne...

There is an immediate bond between a rescued animal and the adopter. These animals seem very aware that they have been spared, and seem to show genuine appreciation for their new circumstances!

Bill...

You always make me laugh! That was funny!

Bo...

Thanks for the support. It is impossible to save them all, but I think those that adopt the creatures reap the rewards of pet ownership. It's a win-win! Thank You.

Clint...

I like dogs too, but I have a special bond with cats ... they seem to respond better to me! Thanks.

Jeremy...

The eyes were the first thing I noticed! He was alone and seemed on the verge of giving up, but the eyes seemed to say "help me!"

Peyton is a cutie!!  I am glad to hear he's doing well.  I believe so strongly in spaying and neutering pets.  Last year, I coordinated with a local animal rescue group to control our neighborhood feral cat population.  I hate to think of kittens taken to the pound and the clock start ticking.  For a small donation, they captured our neighborhood Tomcat and neutered him.  And they fixed many others.  No stray kittens since.  Good news since hubby and I can't resist them, and that's how we ended up on the "fixing the neighborhood" adventure and with three kittens last fall.

Richard- thanks for the update on Peyton. I hate going to the shelters. We donate to them and my wife does some volunteering. I just have a hard time not taking all of them home, cats and dogs.

Spay & Neuter your pets, Please!

What an adorable kitten.  I love cats and have two.  I am partial to siamese and forest cats.

Chris Ann...

Good for you. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it! I am always surprised at the number of feral feline populations in our urban areas. Good for you for taking action to help control the animal population in your area!

Mike...

They all seem to say "I don't belong here, please take me home!" It's sad indeed!

Don...

It was the eyes that I couldn't resist! Thanks for your support!

Leslie...

I like cats and seem to communicate well with them. I like Siamese too but I am not sure what a Forest cat looks like! Thanks.

Richard...good for you! My last rescue was a Greyhound! We had to put him down a year and half ago, and I still miss him everyday. (His picture hangs just above my computer right now!) Not ready for another, but only one I will have is another Greyhound.....He was the best!

Richard, thanks so much for reminding us all of the wonderful companions available at local shelters across the country.  Also, many municipalities and counties offer reduced rate or free spay and neutering programs for pets!  Thanks again for the reminder.  Hey did you not get the cutest kitten in the place?  :)

Shelter animals are the best.  I have participated in fund raisers for Operation Kindness (a no kill shelter) and my husband fostered dogs before I met him.  All of our pets have always been rescues.

Glad to hear that your pet project is a success, but mine is still pure evil.

Little Peyton looks mischievous. I'm coming up on the one year anniversary of my most recent pet shelter adoption. Her name is Zoey, and she's a domestic short hair ginger tabby.

Zoey the cool cat

One of my litmus tests for adopting a cat or dog is that it must let me hold it upside down in my arms so that I can rub its tummy. As you can see, Zoey is quite comfortable being upside down.
