Impressionist painter Claude Monet (1840-1926) became obsessed with the Water lilies, or Nympheas in his garden in Giverny. So overpowering was this passion that he focused on painting the flowers for the last thirty years of his career, creating over 250 canvas panels depicting the floating flora.
When I saw a sampling of the panels at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, I was amazed at the actual size of the works. The canvases there were over 12 feet long each. Some of the Water lily series were 20 feet in length.
There are many that might have said that Monet had lost his mind, that it was foolish for him to paint the same subject over and over. "The workings of a crazy old fool," many would have said.
On June 24. 2008, Monet's "Le bassin aux nympheas," or "Water Lily Pond" sold for a record 80 Million dollars at a Christie's auction. Incredible as it may seem, Monet has managed to inflame the zeal of art collectors and enthusiasts to this very day!
The lesson to be learned is this: If you find your niche in life, it can lead to untold rewards. Focus on one skill, and if you do it better than anyone else, success will come your way! Ignore the naysayers and do what you love. Who knows, you could be the next Monet in your chosen profession!

Finding your niche is the key to being successful....but, more importantly, by doing so, you will be happy! And, lets face facts...if what you are doing isnt fun...then you are doing it wrong or are doing the wrong thing.
BTW...Good Morning, Richard!
Hello, Richard. Nice post. I would just add that one should ignore the naysayers whether or not one finds ones niche.
Well said Richard! I have a problem choosing 'just one' or two things to focus on. I enjoy many areas of the real estate business. Keeping a small list to focus on is key.
Richard - I have actually been there in two previous stages of my life, being the best person in the world at what I did. Yes, they were niche's but, hey, whatever floats your boat.
On another topic, I always get Monet & Manet confused. Can never remember which one I like better. I believe it is Monet. Thanks for clearing that up (until the next time).
RW,
Locating and than executing your niche is perfect advise to anyone who wishes to succeed not only in our profession but in life....
Clint...
What are you doing up so early? Hopefully, you're on your way to the sapphire mine to explore your "niche" field! lol
Todd...
Unless they say: "If you cut that rope that piano will fall on your head"... then I would listen! lol
Mel...
So glad to have you back, and good morning to you! Thanks.
Mike...
Edouard Manet was also an impressionist, but he was no Monet! lol
Scott...
You said it better than I could!
Richard- Great advice...find your niche and stick to it!
Richard -- I wish I was headed to the mine!!!! Im in the office by 6am every day. Most of my customers are on the east coast...so, I need to be here when they are starting to stir...LOL
Hit the nail on the head a usual...I sometimes feel like a Jack of all trades and Master on none.
Richard: A great lesson for all of us. When you find something you love to do, you'll want to spend more time doing it and it will produce better results. Things just seem to "come together" when you do what you love.
I think my main focus in this business is talking so much that people give up and either buy a house or let me sell theirs.
Jeremy...
Thanks for jumping in ... always appreciated!
Clint...
Ah, that explains a lot! Thanks.
Bill...
You have to focus, but that's a whole new blog! lol
Chrs Ann...
Ah that's "The Secret, " isn't it! Thanks, as always!
JL...
It's yout gift, ao why not exploit it?
Richard, what a wonderful post. Very well said...
Carolyn...
Why thank you so much!
Richard,
I love the analogy of what you do once you find your niche and focusing on doing it.
Thank you for the post.
Don R.
Don...
You're welcome, more things in the works!
Richard,
Great post...I have seen Monet's water lilies at the Chicago Art Museum.....if I recall, Monet actually built ponds with water lilies in his own back yard in the last years of his life......and that is most of what he painted....,,.
P. S. How do you find Mel?
Julie...
Correct, he became somwhat of a recluse. Give her a call at the office in the A.M.
Richard, While I was in Paris one of the side trips I took was to Giverny and Monet's home and lily ponds. I know why the man was obsessed....his home gardens and ponds are glorious not to mention the town itself, Giverny. All is painting perfect!
I would like to share a couple photos if it's ok?
Hey Lori, great photographs. Thank you for posting so we could see. I enjoyed getting a peek. Regards, C.
Lori...
Of course it's OK and thanks for the photos and also for verifying that I'm "telling it like it is!" Thanks and glad you're back Stateside.
