| I have enjoyed taking
photographs for years, and through the miracle of sheer numbers, I
have obtained some pretty decent images. I use a Nikon 8088 35mm film
camera that I purchased in 1985, and although it still produces great
images, it has become difficult to find good film and adequate
processing. I purchased a Nikon D-80 digital body in 2006, and was pleased to discover that not only did all of my lenses fit, which I expected, but maintain full functionality, which did not expect. So now I carry both with me whenever I am taking serious photographs. Photography has always been my refuge, and as you can tell from the samples, it is my outlet for getting away to quiet places of solitude, where I can document the wonders of creation. I have now been seriously taking pictures for over thirty years. I haven't regretted one minute of it! |

Richard...these are awsome!! I am usually happy if I can get the picture clear and halfway centered!
I wish I could take photos like that...maybe it will help my listings sell quicker:) Beautiful!
Richard, I am an amateur photographer and am in awe of yours. I am in the process of buying a new digital camera and wonder which Nikon's will support my 35mm lenses. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for taking me away from real estate for a few minutes!
Richard - your photos are beautiful! What program do you use preview, adjust and crop?
Fantastic Richard. I now take my name off the ranks of amatuer photographers. I will stick to making piles of sawdust from large pieces of wood (and I hope I can get A/C into my shop so I can work there during the summer).
Have you every instructed? Do you like to share and help others? You can probably get your own courses at some of the local colleges.
Your talent is one that should be shared.
Your photos insprire me because I am about to purchase a Canon 40D SLR and am hopeful I will make a smooth transition from a Canon EOS Rebel Film Camera and a Kodak V705 to the SLR.
Bill...
Thanks my friend, it something I love to do! I'll just bet that you can out-fish me though!
Neal...
Thanks, it's always nice to get positive feedback, it keeps me going.
Barbara...
All Nikon SLR.s support the classic Nikon Bayonet mount. however, other manufacturer's lenses will not fit. You can buy adapters for some brands, but not all. For instance, I don't know of any way to use a Canon lens on a Nikon body. I live the quality of the Nikkor lenses, so it's a no-brainer for me to just shop E-bay and pick them up on the cheap!
Research each individual brand before you make a decision. Oddly enough, you can buy adapters to put Nikkor lenses on almost any other camera!
Carol...
I know this is hard to believe, but I do most of my work at the time of the shot. With SLR you can properly frame the photo, with good lenses and filters you can adjust the color and contrast, with the right shutte and aperture settings you set depth of field and motion!
The only program I use is Photoshop Elements, which I got free with a Scanner. I usually only use it to resize and add my copyright mark! ( I do enhance occasionally, but only to make the shot look like I first inteneded it to look!)
Richard,
Have you ever thought that you made a wrong career choice? You take some awesome photographs.
Thank you my friend for sharing them with us.
Don R.
BTW, is the top right photo of the Great Smokey Mountains?
Mike...
The best instruction I can offer is to "tinker." Try different lenses, filters, setting in different situations and see how you like them. The other part that is harder to learn is to "see the shot" before you put the camera to your eye.
That's a little hard to teach, I think it comes more naturally to some.
Sam...
If you like the Rebel SLR film you will LOVE the digital body, I guarantee it! Go for it and let's see those photos!
Don...
Every day of my life! I come from an old-time upbringing where work is work, and play is play. Work is something you dislike, play is something you enjoy. I never knew the "secret" was to work by doing what you love. Thanks again my friend.
Actually, now that you mention it, only the sunset is NOT in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Those pics are great!!!!!!!! I would be happy to get the whole shot in one frame never anything like yours...... Keep sharing!! Love the pictures......
Richard - yeah, that's the stuff I used to do. Got out of it to please an ex-wife who said it took too much time away from her. Then got to engrossed in my work. Have made several attempts to start up again, but, seem to always get sidetracked. My passions have since grown in other directions.
Gorgeous pictures - makes me want to get out and find some of these places. We all need a way to recconnect with nature - it centers us.
Frank...
Here's a little secret. When I see a good opportunity like shot number one, I'll take from 30-50 shots at different lens lengths, settings, filterings etc. That way, it's impossible to miss a shot!
Mike...
So you traded photography for woodworking in an non-airconditioned shop on a 95 degree 98% humidity day? I'm not going to mention the ex-wife. Think man, think!
Hope...
Fortunately, I live less than four hours away from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It's my "special" place! Thanks for your comment.
Richard - go figure!
Richard, great photos! Photography is also one of my hobbies. I have a medium format camera (Mamiya 645) that I use for portraits. It is difficult to find someone who will process the film now a days. I do have a color darkroom, but unfortunately find little time to do it any longer. Photography is a great hobby. Thanks for sharing.
Mike...
Yeah!
Michael...
I have never processed color, did B&W a long time ago. I haven't used a medium format camera in years, but I would like to revisit that area of photography. There's something about a huge transparency that nothing else can top!
Nowadays, I stick to shooting anything and everything I can. Sort of a lazy photography syndrome! Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!
Richard, I'm telling you, you are a pro! No doubt about it. I don't know if I told you but my hobby is scrapbooking which goes hand in hand with photography. My skills as a photographer have improved since I took up scrapbboking. But I can't hold a candle to the pictures you post!
Lori...
I know that a lot of people are into scrap-booking these days, it seems like a wonderful hobby that create marvelous momentos.
I don't really think I have an upper hand on anyone except for the experience factors. After taking over 25,000 film photographs and goodness only knows how many digital, you're bound to learn something!
These photos are way too good. Thanks for sharing them with us.
Mel...
You're welcome ... I'm on a roll. (of film!)
Richard, Your pictures are awesome! Thank you for sharing the world around you through your lenses.
Great pictures Richard, I think I bought one of your postcards the other day.
Absolutely beautiful pictures! I really love taking pictures as well, and I have been seriously considering taking a few classes. Happy selling to you, neighbor!
Leolinda...
And thank you for the nicer comment!
JL...
It is entirely possible!
Kristal...
Thanks my Pike County friend, I relly appreciate it!
Richard, Absolutely beautiful photos and the Smoky Mountains are very special to me.. We have rental cabins there and enjoy going often..I have taken many photos there but never the quality of yours.. Thanks for sharing.. God bless.
Cheryl...
Thanks for the Kudos. I think the difference is this ... most go to the Smokies for the hiking, relaxing, restaurants, etc. but I go there to take pictures. I do it methodically, like a job. Every day is planned around photo shoots. But I enjoy doing it and I enjoy the results even more.
Richard, GEE WHIZ !! I didn't realize when I commented on your beautiful Smoky Mountain photos - WHO I was commenting to!! I cannot believe that I just realized who you are!! I have viewed your awesome Smoky Mountain Photo site many times.. I even emailed you over a year ago to ask permision to use a photo on my Smoky Mountain Travel Tips blog - I think I ended up using one of my very NOVICE photos.. Now - I KNOW why your name was somehow familiar to me.. Well - now I have subscribed to your blog so I can keep up with your incredible photos.. God bless !!!!!!!!
BTW< read your post about Trivia - I used to play that - but my fave game is Scrabble !!
Cheryl...
Well (blush) thank you very much. I hope that I answered your email. Unfortunately, Smokyphotos gets about 1000 emails per day and I have trouble keeping up with that and real estate, but you may use a photo by properly accrediting it "Photo courtesy of Richard Weisser and SmokyPhotos.com with a link back to http://SmokyPhotos.com"
I have recently done photos for a book by Charles Maynard, and a few other publications. Fall is just around the corner, and that is my busy time!
Thanks for the kind words!
Richard, Thanks so much, I presume that you don't sleep much ;-) !! Fall is a gorgeous time for photos - happy to make the connection with ya.. IF you want to try one of our cabin rentals - let me know - you probably have your own place - since you go so often .. God bless,
Richard-
Great images, keep up the good work. I shoot Canon for my 35mm work and also shoot Mamiya for Medium format.
absolutely amazing, breathtaking photos! I understand what you mean about refuge!
