The human spirit yearns to wander unfettered through the obstacle course of life. The freedom to determine one’s own destiny is often taken as a given.
But there are those that would suppress liberty and deny the right of self-determination.
And it is for that reason that it is often necessary to defend human rights with more than mere words. As there are those that would forcibly assault freedom, there must also be a willingness to defend it with force.
Memorial Day is the official recognition of the ultimate sacrifice made by the brave men and women that paid for the liberty that we enjoy. Today we honor them in a formal capacity.
But we should also honor them the other 364 days of the year. It is because of their willingness to face the enemy head-on that we have the quality of life that we enjoy today.
The families of the fallen must live with their loss every day. They need our support and condolences on an ongoing basis.
We must never forget. We must never ignore.
And we must NEVER take our freedom for granted.

Richard, so well said and most of us will never know what it is like to be handed the folded flag...remembering all year should be our true tradition.
Hi Richard-nice post and important words. We must never take anything we have and hold dear for granted. Happy MD!
Good morning Richard. Beautiful sentiment - I hope your Memorial Day is wonderful!
Thanks Richard. Hope you have a great Memorial Day. It's worthwhile to pause today to remember those that this day is for.
Well said Richard. A fitting tribute for today and every day.
Amen indeed. Thanks Richard!
Good morning Richard -
Amen - Amen. I have a hard time dealing with saying Happy Memorial Day, I normally opt for have a blessed Memorial Day.
So now I will say may you and yours enjoy a very blessed Memorial Day my friend.
John
Good morning Richard,
You put into words a message we all need to take heed..Amen..thank you Richard you are always so eloquent!
Richard- we cannot repeat your message enough. Every day that we enjoy our freedoms and liberties is a day when we must pay homage to those who fought for them as well as thank and help their families they left behind.
Hey Richard,
What a great tribute for a truly remarkable occasion. Let us live in giving thanks daily.
Well said, Richard. Every American owes a great debt of gratitude to those who have so willing sacrifice all so that we might enjoy freedom.
As Thomas Jefferson said, eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. Celebrating Memorial Day is a way of reminding us of that - through honoring those have given their lives in our nation's service, and those men and women who are protecting us now around the world.
Richard: This is a wonderful way to honor the fallen and show respect to their families.
Yes to your post...We have the best military in the world and it protects the best country on earth...thank you Rich
Good morning Richard, I do honor our brave young men but I don't understand how sending them into other countries to kill people helps our freedom. I think it just creates more enemies for our country.
Richard, Memorial Day is a day to honor the many men and women who have fallen defending our Country. I visited with my Dad this morning at Arlington National Cemetery. A reminder of the men and women who have served.
Richard, I wish I had the poetry with words to state what you have stated so very well.
So true. The sacrifices made for us are often forgotten. Today is the day to remind us of their service.
Richard - I think many do forget the price attached to our freedom. It is easy to do when we don't see the sacrifices.
Happy Memorial Day Richard, Very nicely said and for too many living in our country today, there is a disconnect of why this remains so important. When sacrifice isn't shared, it is often not even acknowledged and just taken for granted.
The ultimate sacrifice has been given to us so that we can badmouth those that fight for our Nation. It is unfortunate that the biggest complainers are the ones that think we should roll over.
Sorry, I was at a service that had some protesters against war.
You are correct. Without the servicemen and women where would we be today.
Such a great reminder for us all. Nothing comes without a price. Excellent post.
Richard, it is so easy to forget the price that was paid for our freedom. This is an excellent reminder to us to be daily mindful of the sacrifice others have made on our behalf.
Unfortunately freedom comes at a price. It saddens me that our service men and women are not given the benefits they deserve. Yes, they should be honored everyday of the year.
Sometimes we ignore the fact that NOTHING is for free... it costs Some One Some Thing! Freedom is no different.
Freedom is taken for granted these days. If we really had some of them taken away..people would go balistic. Many good men and women died for our freedoms, we should not take them for granted.
