Coweta Fayette Real Estate & Newnan Homes for sale blog by Richard Weisser of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Metro Brokers

Is contentiousness on the rise?

Is contentiousness on the rise?Is it just me or is anybody else noticing this? It seems that people are a lot more touchy these days

And I’m not just talking about business. Real estate at its very core is adversarial, so it’s quite common for buyers and sellers and their agents to get their hackles raised during a transaction.

But I have noticed that the phenomenon has seemed to leach over into nearly every facet of daily life, People seem to want to fight at the drop of a hat.

Is it a sign of the times? Perhaps it is a reflection of the economy.

Whatever the reason, it’s a disturbing trend that I do not like one bit.

And I hope, for goodness sakes, that it changes direction soon!

People are unhappy about many things and they expect the Government to make it all better, when in truth we make much of our own happiness.

Richard, I just know not to assume that a green light means go!  There's more and more reason to be even more cautious about how we act and speak.

Richard~ Lots of reasons for people to be more cautious in everything we do. We are all so bombarded with so much information ...much of it wrong.. that people question things more and more. I see the "what's in it for me" mentality prevailing more than ever before. I would like to think that a better balance of that is in our future.

It is the current world.  There is no trust because of all the scams.  Hate abounds because we have lost sight of our creator because we don't like the laws he laid down.  Of course this is just one side and my opinion.

With social media it is easy to broadcast one's wrongs all over the world. Before long a small slight turns into major drama.

I have noticed a huge difference over the past five years or so...one small thing can set a person off.  And the big thing I have noticed is people who apologize to me over something trite...I guess they have been conditionned that any supposed slight is deserving of an apology.  I just don't get it!  Life is too short to go to battle over every little thing!

Maybe just the tail end of the winter doldrums.    It seems that when spring begins, people are anxious to get back outside and not feel so housebound.    We are somewhat lucky in our business, in that we can get out and go.    For many people, they are behind the desk or committed to one spot for hours on end.    I hope it's just seasonal in your area and that you will see many more smiles soon.

We are with you Richard, we hope it changes soon too. Seems people are always in a time crunch and stressed.

Richard when the cold war ended we had nobody to vent on. Now rather than face our own problems we event on each other. I am not sure real estate is any worse than it was 3 years ago. But on other levels I agree with you

The pace of life has sped up so much and our bodies were not built for this. Way, way too much stress.

I've noticed this, as well, but am trying to be more upbeat and greet people with a smile, both within and outside the real estate world. I know for me, seeing a smile from someone can help ease whatever stress, frustration or sadness I might be feeling so hopefully I'm doing the same for them.

Everything you hear in the news is negative ... and you hear the news on many formats 24/7.  It's no wonder that people feel stressed and on-guard.  I like you, hope that it improves soon.  Perhaps if we all learn to control the technology, instead of it controlling us???

Great food for thought ...

People do seem to be more self-centered, don't they? Thanks.

I wonder if Smart Phones have something to do with it. I'm not kidding, I really do. Thanks.

Doug...

Social media AND Smart phones. Thanks.

Kathryn...

You are so right about that! Thanks so much.

Richard, I think it's filtering down from Washington and the idiot news commentators from both sides of the fence.

Richard:  I have noticed the same thing in every day life.  People are irritable. Perhaps disillusioned.  When you are not happy with your lot in life you often lash out at the slightest provocation real or perceived.

Richard, I believe that it is the state of the economy again that is driving this type of behavior.  I think we've all seen it before.

Oh yeah.  Contentiousness is on the rise and it's ridiculous.  In my own community we have two different stop sign issues being debated on our community forum.  It's falling into name calling over the attitude that one person's issue is more important than the others.  The residents can't see that even though one may not effect them, if everyone worked on BOTH, they'd have a higher likelihood of success.  It's stupid.
