What happened to winter? We are still waiting for its appearance.

What happened to winter? We are still waiting for its appearance. So far this year, winter has not made much of an appearance. Although there was a freak early snowstorm in the Northeast here in Georgia Winter has not amounted to much more than a few frosty mornings.

Here is it, the second day of January, and I still have a few peppers than can be harvested from a still alive (although not exactly vigorous) pepper plant.

I guess from a purely economic perspective, a mild winter in a real boon as we save on heating fuel and the cost of snow removal.

But from an aesthetic point of view, it somehow does not feel “right.” It’s January and it’s supposed to be cold.

I’m certain that this is probably one of those cases of “be careful what you wish for,” as there is plenty of opportunity for some real winter weather in the upcoming months.

But for now, I’ll just take advantage of the nice weather and get some yard work done!”

I looked at the weather report for the week here and we are going to have temperatures in the upper 60s to 70 which is high for the seasonal averages.  I would expect 40s and 50s and possibly a little snow flurry.  I agree, a little off the norm and just has not herald in the holidays and New Years with the right feeling.  On the other hand it is sunny, pleasant and feels like spring.  Just hope the real estate sales parallels this weather, it would be nice to have a spring season in the winter!

Good morning Richard,

We were in the 70's yesterday in Austin as we took down our Christmas tree and all the decorations..I was able to go for a walk and shake off the feeling of another year slipping by at breakneck speed:).

After our crazy October storm, I am glad that I can still see a green lawn and hope it lasts until spring!  I wouldn't care if I never saw snow again!

Hi Richard.   Could I wish for and would it be fair to wish for no snow this year here in New England??   I know we need it for the economy of our winter sports areas, but after last year, it feels so awesome not to bring that snow blower or ice scraper out!

Welcome to our world here in the South.  We experience a few cold snaps but it quickly returns to warm temps!  It was 78 the other day!

Richard, We snapped cold last night and got less than an inch of snow last night/this morning.  Just enough to cause complete chaos on the highways!  Glad today was another holiday from the day job.  Bill

It's been lame everywhere we have been this winter.  Even Boston  and northern Michigan had no snow.  Kind of crazy.  On the other side of the coin, the winter jacket I ordered for my daughter for Christmas was way too big and we had to send it back, and I have yet to get new tires on my car .  Soooo, I'm okay with this!

Richard, we are saying the same thing here in Edmonton! I've just finished painting the inside of my green house and installing shelves! At plus or minus a few degrees around 0 celsius it is balmy weather here for the first week of January! Enjoy your peppers!

Personally I am ready to plant a small patio garden...so winter can just forget to come this year....I would be okay with that.

Loving the mild weather we've been having, but I have an inkling we'll be getting our share of snow over the next month or two or three. Or four. :)

WE finally got some snow sat night.  A couple of inches and if the sun stays away, it may stay until the weekend.

It's been plenty cold here, and I've got over a foot of settled snow in the yard. Which is less than the 2-3 feet we would normally have...

Be careful, you may get what you wish for. I hear you on that. I, too, have been pleasantly surprised to be enjoying milder weather. I am getting to the age where I do not enjoy shoveling snow, so I will hold my breath for as long as I can and hope for the best. Have a great 2012.

I think it is here! We had a low of about 40 this morning and the forecast is 28 in the morning.  For Florida that is cold!

We've had a couple of 2 to 3 day cold snaps with a dusting of snow on the first day. But then it's back to several days of warmer weather.  Everyday I see people still walking around in t-shirts, shorts and flip-flops.  No complaints.  I can deal with winter in 2 to 3 day increments.  :)
