Please don’t forget our fine feathered friends this holiday season!

Please don’t forget our fine feathered friends this holiday season! It has been said that bird-watching is the most popular hobby in theUnited States. Many of us put out a feeder to attract different species of birds to our homes.

We enjoy identifying the birds that visit our feeders. Some are transient, some are seasonal, and many are year round regulars that have come to depend on a reliable source of food.

And the fact that they do indeed become dependent on a regular food supply makes it incumbent upon us to maintain the resource throughout the winter months.

Even though the cost of bird seed has risen dramatically over the last few years, once we have assumed the responsibility of controlling bird populations and feeding habits we must also continue to ensure that food is available.

The rewards far exceed the expense. It's a great way to see many species of birds "up close and personal!"

Our fine feathered friends are truly depending on us.

Let’s not let them down!

Richard, that is a wonderful idea. And a bird feeder makes a nice gift for some.

Richard, It is about time for us to start with the seed feeders.  We pulled down the hummingbird feeders recently, the little ones have been gone for weeks.

Richard, I have two feeders on the posts of my deck. My bird room (I have 2 umbrella cockatoos, but had more birds over the years) is the dining room, just inside the french doors from the deck. It's fun watching the outside birds and the inside birds checking on each other. Some of the outside birds try to get inside, to see what is so special. (Or at least that's what it appears they are doing). The only birds the 'toos are afraid of are the crows and the occassional red-tailed hawk that will stop by. While I always keep food in the outside feeders, the outside birds also get the leftover mix (grains, legumes, & veggies) I make for the 'toos.

Richard, we moved into a new house in May of this year and I have not gotten my feeder up yet. I did get the Hummy feeder up. We have a small courtyard and I have finally figured out where the feeder can go that we will see it and enjoy both from inside and out. You are incenting me to get to a local store and purchase a new feeder. My old ones are worn out. We use to back to 3 acres of wild land that crossed a creek. The wildlife would use it to travel through populated area and we so enjoyed the migration of birds and our local birds. We saw many wonderful bird sighting on our sheltered porch looking at the wild lands.

It will now be more tempered in the birding but none the less enjoyable. We are only a block from the Sacramento River where we have access to Great Blue Herons, the Great While Heron, and occasionally the Bauld Eagle. Not bad, heh?

I love your photo there. Perfect. You are very good at getting the shot. I need to spend more time waiting for the shot. We use to get a few shots with David's Russian 300 mm camera....but that is gone now. William is inspiring us to get a new lens....they are pricey, however! Thank you for a treat this morning and a new incentive to get my feeder going. I love attracting the Gold Finches, well and I could go on. Happy Holidays!

Ellen...

You are right about that! They do make a great gift. Thanks.

Bill...

I wonder how those little winter birds keep warm in Ohio? They must have some great internal furnaces! Thanks.

Chiara...

Sound like you a real bird aficionado. I have seen a red-tailed hawk on occasion (they frighten the other birds away) as well as flickers and woodpeckers. It's fun to see the different birds that come by. Thanks.

That's great advice, Richard.  I would imagine a lot of folks just don't think about it.  Have a great Tuesday!!

Richard we're keeping our feeders full and our backyard looks like a bird airport.  We even have a neighbor that keeps our feeders full while we travel.  We are known in our community as the keeper of the birds.  Imagine that.

Richard, right you are.

We actually moved the feeders closer to the door and stocked up on feed last night.

Fill daily and watch the festivities

Enjoy the day

Western TanagerLove watching the birds through the seasons! We feed the hummingbirds, but enjoy a wide variety of year-round and migrating birds. Grouse, hawks, hummingbirds, all kinds of warblers, jays, etc. Here's one of my favorites, sitting on my deck chair...they pass through each May and are only here for about two weeks...

Stocking up on bird food is always one of my Christmas gifts to my cats...And to quickly clarify that - they are indoor only cats, but they absolutely love to perch by the back slider or in a window so they can watch the birds and "talk" to them just a bit.  Birds safe and fed, cats entertained - WIN!

I agree... As our area grows I've noticed a big drop in our bird population. I love having them around, all kinds, bring them on! I remember growing up and waking up to bird doing their low chatter long before the alarm went off. I'm sure of it, they brought up the sun.

We live on 10 acres and have chickens and ducks!  The little birds share their meals everyday.

Richard, I had to stop a few years ago. I have cats.... and they found out how easy the birds were at the feeder... it was not pleasant. But when we have storms here I always put something out for them and keep the cats inside. It is almost as if the birds come to the back door and ask for food.

Good morning Richard,

It's hard keeping up with the little rascals, but so much fun to watch them at the feeders.  I still can't seem to find one that is squirrel proof, though - and I've tried them all.  Oh well, I get to feed them too!
