There’s a place that beckons us and seizes our thoughts. And try as we might to ignore it, it calls to us during our hectic lives and interrupts our busy schedule.
It’s the stuff of daydreams and idleness, yet we cannot push the thoughts aside.
It is human nature to seek the shelter of comfort and refreshment, especially when the pressures of everyday life push us to the brink of exhaustion.
My “special place” is next to a cold rushing mountain stream in the midst of the forest.
The combination of the sounds of tumbling water, the chirping of the frogs and the birds, the wafting scent of the riverine dampness on the rocks and mosses, and the sight of dancing light bouncing on the ripples offer the cool refreshment that reinvigorates the spirit and frees the mind from all other distractions.
To me, sitting beside a mountain stream and taking it all in is Nirvana.
And just thinking about it isn’t all that bad either!

Richard - you painted a wonderful picture with your words and the photos reached out to me! I could almost hear the sound of running water and hear the sounds of nature! You are right it that, at times, we can go there in our minds for a few brief moments. Nice!
First thing in the morning when nobody is up and not a boat is on the lake at my Dad's house when I visit. There is something so peaceful yet reflective.
Beautiful photos! I'm from Florida, which is flat flat flat -- so mountains are just magical to me. Every year I spend a week in August in Blowing Rock (NC). After working hard through spring and summer, it's a time to relax and refresh the spirit.
Barbara...
Thanks so much. Now I need to take a trip to the mountains for the real thing!
Barb...
The stillness of the lake, maybe the honking of a goose or the cooing of a mourning dove? It sounds awesome, THX.
Dianne...
I have only been to Blowing Rock once, but I love Asheville! I need to get up there more often! Thanks.
Richard - We have good friends who allow us to use their pool overlooking Long Island Sound when they are away. It's the closest thing we have to a vacation these days. We love watching the sailboats on the Sound and the pool is one of the natural kind that blends into the beautiful landscaping. Nirvana! If I were to actually go on vacation, my ideal get away is North Truro at Cape Cod, but I haven't been there in years.
Good morning Richard. What a lovely post and soothing picture. Is there room there for me: I promise to be quiet and not disturb you.
I agree! Plus the sun streaking beautiful rays between the trees is the icing on the cake of eye candy.
Richard,
I agree; Creation was mention to be enjoyed. We took a picnic lunch to one of our Sacramento River parks yesterday.
Had a great time.
Best,
Steve
Richard,
For me, any place where there is no technology to intrude on my peaceful time.
Rich
I’m not sure which part of this post I’m enjoying most. I can ignore the pictures and visualize the scenery in my mind just from your writing yet I find these pictures tell the complete story without the need for words.
I am pretty simple. I can get up and take my Boston Terrier buddy Diesel Dog for a walk just before sunrise.
Richard, you are likely to find me in such a place as well
Richard, I have one of those same spots and mine has a very comfortable hammock that calls to me often.
Richard, great shots.
I like to get to the mountains myself. But when there is no time the garden works just fine.
I always loose track of time, which means it works lol
Enjoy the day
Beautiful post, Richard, nicely written and illustrated. For me, it's the ocean and listening to the waves roll in.
Richard...I would love to spend some time by that stream. For a different reason as you know!
That looks like a very beautiful and peaceful place to meditate and be at one with the universe. Great description. Thanks.
May sound funny, but I really enjoy my backyard with Koi Pond, water wall, water plants, hammock.
Richard,
I want to go there! It looks cool!

Richard, for me it's Rock Creek, which runs through the middle of the city in a park that looks like it should be in the mountains. I love what you did with these shots. Looks soooo peaceful, and we all need some of that.
I find the same places refreshing. You paint a vivid picture with your words.
Hey, Richard! I included this post in Last Week's Favorites. Have a great Sunday!
My favorite place to unwind in in Maine where I just spent a week's vacation time- eating lobster, hiking Bald Mountain, kayaking with porpoises in Deep Cove, checking out art work by the fabulous mid-coast artists, playing badminton with the kids and walking in the woods. LOVE IT!
Richard, great photo & topic. I am incredibly fortunate that a lot of the real estate I sell in Colorado is mountain property, ranches or 2nd homes. Being able to be with customers finding their "place" is like being on vacation because of the natural beauty that envelopes us as well as the wildlife we usually get to see (and sometimes hear).
The sound of running water is very peaceful and relaxing....It's often used for meditation .
Lovely picture, thank you for posting.

For me it's my big, front, wrap-around porch. There's often a breeze, the windchimes are lovely and my pristine white couch and purple pillows is so comforting. I love your pics, too.
Gretchen
Hi Richard - I agree with you. We used to camp and hike a lot and I would spend hours sitting by a stream and watching the animals come to drink. Your spot is gorgeous! I wish I were there!
Those pics look like paintings! I FEEL RELAXED JUST LOOKING AT THEM.
This was a beautiful post to read and I loved the pictures! Thank you for a beautiful gift.
Hi Richard, beautifully done and little wonder these are your favorite get away places to re-compose, body , mind and soul. Beautiful!
