Autumn is just around the corner and that means many “leaf lovers” will be heading to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for the annual display of brilliant Fall foliage.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers a unique outdoor experience for visitors of every level of expertise and physical condition.
There is an extensive series of backcountry trails and campsites for those that really want to get back to nature and “rough it” and there are also auto trails where you can see the park up close and personal from the comfort of your car!
If you plan to hike anywhere in the park, be aware not only the length of the trail, but also the amount of elevation change and the terrain. Even a two mile hike can be strenuous if the trail is steep and rocky.
You can get maps and plenty of free advice at any one of the Park’s three visitor’s centers. The Oconaluftee Center is located just outside of Cherokee North Carolina, the Sugarlands Center is near Gatlinburg Tennessee, and the Cades Cove Center is located deep within one of the most popular areas in the Park.
The Visitor’s Centers will also offer relevant information about travel conditions, road closures, and wildlife activity. Chances are, you will encounter at least one black bear during your visit.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of greatest treasures of the Southeastern United States. I highly recommend to anyone for a truly memorable Fall vacation!

Nice post Richard. I haven't been to the Great Smoky Mountians, since a trip to Georgia as a kid. But one of the greatest drives in our country
No one can argue with the scenic level of the Great Smoky Mountains--those photos bring back lots of "colorful" memories of my multiple trips through the area.
I love the changing of colors in the fall. Great Smoky Mounts is a great place, and there are several others back east as well.
I so wish I could go and see this display of mother nature! The only thing that really change here are the Chinese Tallow Trees...that is the only time those trees are appreciated.
So I will have to depend on you Richard to display the beauty most of us will miss.
Coming to you from Texas....
Richard..what is the peak time to be there. I know here in Minnesota, peak in some areas will be in a week or so this year.
I love it up there. It is too bad that so many of the old Jeep roads were removed... they would make really cool trails.
Hi Richard,
I was fortunate to visit this lovely area many years ago..I'll always remember the vivid colors! Gorgous part of our country!
It is on our list of things to do and see if I ever get to retire. Seems the economy has made us detour for awhile.
Richard I had the chance to buy a cabin in the Smokies years ago and I am kicking myself to this day for not doing it.
Oh my gosh, are those pictures for real? I've been to Atlanta and to Ft. Benning - that's it. Never saw anything so breathtaking. Where these photos taken recently?
