Believe it or not, the Coweta County Georgia 2010-2011 school year commences today, August 9. The vacation break just seemed to fly on by!
It’s been a long time since I have had a child in school, but I like the ability to drive around the county during the summer without encountering a school bus or school traffic. In the real estate business, one must always account for these delays when navigating to appointments.
So I carefully allow for extra travel time during the school year, especially in the high school “hot spots” where many of the students drive. It can sometimes take over ten minutes extra in these areas.
Also, in Georgia there is zero tolerance for speeding in a school zone, so pay attention to the speed limits and times when they are strictly enforced.
So drive extra carefully today, and watch out for the children and lost bus drivers.
And allow enough time for everyone to stay safe!

It's amazing that summer vacation is over -
it will tak a lot of drivers by surprise !
Richard....you start school early....when I taught in Island Falls, Maine (Andy Mooers' neck of the woods) they started school early so that the schools could close for potato harvest.....why do you start so early???
That is really early.. specially for the South where summer still full blast
My youngest starts today as well. Very hard to get out of a speeding ticket in a school zone.
wow, that is an early start date, good idea to get the info out there, and I know what you mean about school bus traffic. Keep an eye out for kids and slow down, I don't understand that are in such a rush they speed in a school zone.
Starting here in Florida today as well. I have to adjust my drive times, routes and appointments around those school zones! The problem is the start times are so varied that it seems there is always a school zone!
Richard, I too have had a few years since I had to drive my kids to school but now I'm on call for grandchildren. How did those years disappear? Living on this little island I have a break. Just about the time we have to start watching for the buses, the speed limit that was reduced to 35 for tourist season is changed to 45 for the rest of the year.
Thanks for reminding us to watch out for those high school drivers and the buses. I'd rather lose a little time from my day than risk causing harm to any child.
Here in Cobb County we started last Thursday. BTW, unfortunatley, I can attest to that 0 tolerance in school zones. I got a ticket last year for that. :-(
We start next week, the Clarke County schools and the UGA, a double whammy. Drive carefully!
August 9th seems really to be going back to school. Shouldn't there be a chill in the air? That's what always let me know school was about to start. Our kids in Northern VA go back the day after Labor Day. However, the chill that used to be in the air that time of year is long gone.
Richard...Our schools don't start until just before or just after Labor Day. Your area must get out early also!
Yes, it's back to school. Traffic in the Atlanta Metro is in full swing. And watch out for the soccer moms running their errands at lunch time! Who knew a minivan could be so dangerous!??
Too early to go back to school;). My daughter starts in 2 weeks and that is soon enough, because when she goes back to school it means I go back to school. Great advice though about proper planning for those appointments.
Thanks for the reminder Richard. First day of school for students in Volusia County Florida is not until August 23.
Great reminders for all of us Richard. And of course please stop for all school buses!
It's amazing how soon school seems to start back these days. I always know that there are a couple roads I avoid altogether during certain parts of the day this time of year.
