As many of my readers already know, I play guitar in a band every Friday night. We have a standing engagement at a local watering hole so I guess you could say that we have a steady gig.
But there is another kind of gig that may not be as easy to manage. The gigabytes of information that we have committed to the realm of cyberspace over the years may be an out-of-control archive of old data and irrelevant information.
Placing information on the Internet for all to see is so easy, that it doesn’t take long to amass a huge disorganized repository of ancient and sometimes conflicting media of all sorts.
Conversely, removing data from the realm of webdom is next to impossible. Even if the offending information is located, attempts to correct it may be futile. Passwords long forgotten cannot be sent to email addresses that have since been abandoned.
I stumbled upon an old website of mine the other day. Long ignored but still fully functional, it could be used reinforce my arsenal of business generators.
That is, if I can figure out how to log on!

Every system has its flaws, even the internet....at least with blogging, we can remove information or update it....unless we stop blogging and forget what our password is!!! that will never happen.
Barbara (above) - what about when your post gets reblogged, or hijacked? Then your stuff could be around forever! I think there will be archeologists in the future who do nothing but dig trhough ages of digital detrius . . .
Good morning Richard,
Barbara is right..each system has it's flaws! You are right if you forget those pass words it's next to impossible to log on and make changes! How did your gig go last night? I think it is so cool you do that..what fun!!
Barbara...
But what about all of those sites that give us a free profile? I remember putting a lot of stuff in PLACES I don't remember! lol and thanks as always for your contributions to the discussion.
Richard...
So true! And I love the phrase "digital detritus!" Thanks so much.
Dorie..
Actually, we got off to a slow start. But somewhere in the middle people actually applauded. That scared me at first because I thought it was gunfire! lol, thanks for asking my friend.
Good morning Richard. Nothing to add here...
But I sure like the thought of you "jamming" on stage!
Ken
Hey Richard,
See you do have a following and you are being modest!! That's what all the applause was about..way to go!!
Richard,
I think it will be interesting when all the young people who put everything they do up on twitter and facebook realize that their future colllege and employers now google them to learn what they've been up to, not just what it states on the application.
Ken..
It's fun! Thanks so much.
Dorie...
There were a few "sour notes!" I'm going to do a video soon. lol
Diane...
Many that are seeking sensitive positions need to be fully aware! Thanks so much.
Richard...I have a hard time controling today's content let alone getting rid of yesterday's.
Oh gosh, I'm certain I have "profiles" here or there on the web for programs that I've long forgotten about, most of which have probably been beaten out by new programs anyways. Still, a little strange to think about...
My husband was trying to help his Mom with a long forgotten password she suddenly needed. It's always a good idea to have a list of your passwords somewhere. Maybe in a strong box or safe.
Maybe the password is the chords to your favorite song.
Too true. I have information out there, I don't know how it got there in the first place, with incorrect information & I can't figure out how to remove it or correct it. GRRRR!
Richard, it's so easy to lose a password, etc, for this reason, I print out the entry page of all the sites I need passwords to enter, and print them, then write in my password etc. Place them in a folder, and provided I don't lose the folder I'm all set. It can get very frustrating.
Richard:
How many gigs? I am afraid to even try to remember. Chapters from a book I wrote over ten years ago are still floating around in the Internet. Some of it is outdated information.
Richard, some of us do leave a long trail of posts, sites, etc on the web. Sometimes, very difficult to manage.
