I just returned from a turnaround business trip to Tallahassee Florida. It was essentially driving down to the Florida state capital, spending an uncomfortable night at a motel, checking out early and doing the job, and then heading straight back to Newnan.
And during all of those long, lonely miles of driving, there is plenty of time to think. As you get further away from the big city, there is mile after mile of “nothing” punctuated only by the occasional farm or very small town.
It’s a startling contrast from the high density development in the metro areas. Instead of five houses per acre, a fifty acre tract of land is considered small. The value of land in these areas is still determined only by its ability to produce timber or crops rather than the ability to be subdivided.
And although the amount of land on the earth is finite, there is still plenty of it out there for those that really want to get away from it all!
Yes, it really does make you think!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Driving is a good time to think about the individuals we will impact with our positive actions.
Richard,
I long for the days when I can get back to a more rural environment. Suburban Maryland is pretty crowded.
Rich
Back in the late 40's, Long Island was nothing but farmland in all counties. My grandparents had a chicken farm in Massapequa. Now, you have to travel to the Eastern end to find farms and farmstands. You have the best of both worlds where you are Richard and that is nice :)
Richard.....I call where I live, Franklin, Ma. cow country, but in fact , we have very few large parcels remaining.....everything has been developed....
Jackie...I love the to go out East on Long Island.....the sod farms and the veggie stands are great....we'd take the ferry to Orient Point.
Richard:
There is nothing like a long drive to give you time to think. And, the beauty of undeveloped land is quite precious these days.
I'm eager to figure how to forecast which of these mostly barren lands today will become tomorrow's in-demand lands.
Roy...
It IS a great time to think. Thanks.
Rich...
Let me know if you want a big tract in "Nowhere!" It's surprisingly affordable. Thanks.
Jackie...
I've always wanted to drive Long Island from end to end. I'll bet the contrast from city to country is beyond belief! Thanks so much.
Richard...As a real estate broker this must feel like a bus-men's holiday, all that great property just empty, but as they say buy land they don't make it anymore.
I used to drive all over the country trying to get away from this rock band that kept following me wherever I would go, and all I can say is there is a lot of beautiful country out there...But, like you mentioned in this post, they're not making any more if it.
Richard, you are more and more mysterious.... I am hoping to retire to a town where there is one gas station, a general store with food included and perhaps even a post office. Where the population is small enough that you know most of them!
Richard - The older I get he more I think mybrother has it right...a house and pool in the middle of 85 acres - all paid for and peaceful!
Brentwood, TN has very little farmland open, but the parks are great to get away from the the city.

Richard, Living in a rural area makes me appreciative every day of where I live. In town, some of the homes are so close, it seems like you could almost reach out from one window and touch the other house.
Open spaces, you are right they are not making it anymore. A long drive like that, alone, does give you time to really truly think. We agree those motel beds are unbelievable, makes you appreciate home.
I live about 1/2 miles from downtown Dallas. I love being in such an urban area. We are in a patio home with no yard; however a wonderful city park serves as our front lawn.
Barbara...
Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi, so we still have PLENTY of land! Thanks, as always.
Claudette...
It was eerily peaceful! Thanks so much.
Chris...
And tonight's lottery numbers! lol and thanks.
Richard: I used to love road trips. I think I am overdue for one. I love it when you drive through those vast expanses of "ruralness." Wow. I think I just made up a new word.
I wouldn't mind having one of those 'Small' parcels and just chill for awhile.
Richard while it is true that there still is a lot of land available, it is not always readily available when somone wants to buy. 4 years ago, I would put up 10 acres for sale at top price and have a bidding war go on.
It is a bit different today, but I see that happening again. Especdially as some areas zone for more agriculture.
Hi Richard, Whenever I get the chance to go on a road trip, I'm always amazed and gratefull for all those wide open, beautiful spaces in our country. Glad you got out of the city and got a chance to take a break!
Yeah...I don't know very much about buying and selling land, Richard, but the more I find about it, it sure DOES seem to be a lot like the lottery. Well put!
