There is nothing more beautiful or fragrant than a veritable cloud of blooming wisteria floating in the treetops! The profusion of lavender blooms creates vernal sculptures of unparalleled beauty.
But such splendor often comes at a price, and with wisteria, that price is that the vigorous vine can be quite destructive if left uncontrolled. Many a homeowner has made the mistake of planting the species too close to the house resulting in severe damage as the tendrils can penetrate even the smallest cracks and pry the structure apart!
With that being said, the vines are easily propagated, and readily adapt to poor soil. Be certain to plant them at least thirty feet away from buildings or other desirable species of plants that could become choked or overrun. If you want train the plant to grow on an arbor or trellis, be prepared to prune as often as necessary.
When used judiciously, wisteria is a fine addition to any southern landscape. It just wouldn’t seem like Spring without it!

Hi Richard ~ I love wisteria, and the smell is oh so good!
The Wisteria is also one of the hardest plants to kill once it is established, to the point it is known as a parasite. Incredibly beautiful & fragrant but a parasite nevertheless.
Richard, although I love them, we had one that had been planted just off the back deck. It had been there for a long time. I fought with the growth that came under the house and to the front door. A very hardy plant to be sure. If I was to plant one, it would be closer to the neighbors house, LOL.
I have seen them climb to the top of 50 foot trees and then next door to the neighboring tree, just nearly choking them out. They are beautiful and smell so good but do need to be controlled.
Is this plant related to Mistle toe? I love their color and smell. Yet it can in time overwhelm certain areas and trees. Yet spring would be remiss without their fine plumage
Hi Richard...Out here in the country where I live it is not unusual to see wisteria growing wild and it's wonderful to see in the spring.

Hi Richard-
It isn't Spring without wisteria in flower. We have had it on trellises of 2 homes that we have owned, (we usually don't live anywhere long enough to ge the full effect of our plantings), but it is one of those plants that says "home' to me...
Thanks for sharing your beautiful photo!

I love those vines myself, but you're right, if left unchecked they can cause a lot of trouble. Just like anything else that you don't keep a close eye on.
Wisteria is beautiful, but I enjoy it in other folks yards. You are right about it being very invasive and destructive if planted too close to a house...
Helping you, live your, American dream...
Wish we had those here. I would love one! Very pretty and I love fragrance when it comes to flowers and trees. Have a great day Richard! :)
Wisterias are GREAT.......
Adds elegance and class.........
Beauty and a lovely fragrance
I have one that I transplanted in the back yard, and it is GORGEOUS right now!
Richard - that is a beautiful photo - wisteria is beautiful but with any plant it does need to be controlled.
I have thought wisteria was so beautiful - this a gorgeous photo, Richard!
