Every other Friday night, a group of friends and I gather up our instruments and electronics and head to a local watering hole to create some musical magic.
And while we know how to play nearly a thousand songs, the odds of one of us knowing all of the lyrics from start to finish is fairly remote. As a matter of fact, we often find ourselves looking to each other with that quizzical look that asks: “line?”
For a guitar player, once the licks are committed to memory the seemingly innocuous task of learning the words seems inconsequential.
This is not unusual in any endeavor. There is a natural tendency to conquer the major elements quickly, and to set aside the “minor details” for either a later time or to depend on someone else to take up the slack.
But in reality, without all of the details in place, there is never a cohesive effort that results in a successful conclusion. All that remains is a lot of hard work with nothing of significance to show for it.
The devil is indeed in the details. And there is nothing to be gained by overlooking them.

Hi Richard, when you are out with friends, having a good time is all that matters. Professionally, well, that is a different story. Have a great day Richard!
Very true to life
Very good point to remember no matter what you are undertaking.
Hi Richard,
I have to laugh as I have spent the evening listening to my Mother's childhood friends recordings. God love him... but lets just say that he need a BIT more practice!! As Jackie states... it's all about the fun. Sounds like you have a good time anyways. Have a great Friday and enjoy your weekend.
Dawn
Jackie...
Well, we are somewhere in the middle of friends and professional ... more like a pick-up game of football. Problem is, when you get a request, it may have been a LONG tme since you played that song. Thanks so much.
Michael...
Thanks.
Jay...
Very true in real estate, isn't it? Thanks for the comment.
Richard - You are right. It is easy to play rhythm, a lot more challenging to play lead(er)!
Good morning Richard,
I think it is wonderful you have a release like your Friday night group! Having fun and making it happen is great fun! Enjoy giving tonight's performance..I'm sure the audience loves it!
Richard....musicians have options if they don't pay attention to detail....there's always lip sync to fall back on....can't do that in real estate....there's no second option for a successful performance.
Richard:
How do you remember all of those lyrics?
I know the words to many songs but it is only appropriate for me to sing them in the shower or an enclosed car since I have no singing voice at all...
Richard: I can't play a guitar to save my life, but I can always remember the words to just about any song. Too bad I don't live in the area.
Richard, I have witnessed first hand the same phenomenon with my guitar playing son...he plays well, but has never bothered to learn the words. I tell him, the back up guitarist doesn't get paid nearly as well as the front man, and you can't perform a one man show if you don't sing.
My brother-in-law belonged to such a group. Lots of good laughs and music with people he loved. He sings with the angels now. We miss his music.
Good analogy - and true - unless the music has no lyrics :-) You need a woman in the group - they're good at the lyrics :-)
I have to confess, I played in a band and I made up cheat sheets for the lyrics. I would commit the chorus to memory, but I would write out the first couple of words of every sentence in the verse and have them taped to my monitor. Of course my eyesight was better then, so I don't know if I could get away with that today :)
Richard, music is such a way to release stress. You can learn so much from it and how it all fits together just like the components of a Real Estate transaction. My brother inlaw plays several instruments in a Bluegrass band and I love watching the dance as everyone in the band does their part with the single mike. Moving in and out of the soloist position.
What peeves me is when I can't understand the lyrics even when they are sung. My daughter is a songwriter and performer and I'm always stressing the importance of good diction when singing. What good is having a lyric if no one can understand you when you sing?
I'll bet we could get an ActiveRain band together and pump out some great music. Finding someone who knows all the lyrics seems like a distinct possibility with all the members here in the Rain!
Funny that you should mention that. I used to play in a band, and in the middle of the song forgot what line came next. Talk about awkward - Yikes...
Detail, Details, details...the way of the world today.
I am in a differnet boat...I know the lyrics, but the instrument playing has much to be desired!
LOL. I'm on a worship team. It doesn't matter how long I've known a song, I can still get distracted (I'm VERY easily distracted!) and lose my place in the song. So I always keep the words in front of me... ALWAYS!
That being said, in real estate it's difficult to remember all those little things when the market has been so slow. It's easy to forget the very important, but little details that must be done!
Richard, truer words were never spoken (written). To offer the complete package, one must know all the contents.
You have said a mouthful there, Richard. Indeed, the resolution of the details is the key to a successful ending in about any endeavor.
I've sung the same songs at church for about anywhere from 2-15 years. I am usually lost without the words. I mess up even with them!!
