Coweta Fayette Real Estate & Newnan Homes for sale blog by Richard Weisser of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Metro Brokers

Operating a website is a lot like gardening. It takes a lot of work and regular upkeep!

Reaping the harvest of your successThe role of a webmaster is not one of a singular undertaking, but instead, it requires the ability to of the developer to multitask in a variety of disciplines.

And while content is king, and consumes the highest percentage of allotted task time, the more mundane tasks of compliance and maintenance have to be addressed on a periodic schedule.

There is nothing more annoying to website visitors than dead links or missing or incomplete pages. What good is it to succeed in SEO only to lose the visitor because content is out of date or there are too many maintenance issues with the site.

I think that operating a website is a lot like gardening. You have to plant new material on a regular basis, nurture it with SEO and constantly weed out the spurious issues that arise, and remove aging growth that has already bloomed and is past its prime.

And it’s a never-ending cycle that requires dedication and perseverance. And like gardening, the reaping of the benefits may be many months down the line.

And the quality of the harvest will depend entirely on the strict adherence to sound farming principles.

I have always thought of it as a game. Probably chess. Make a move, and wait for the reaction. The opponent is the serarch engines, not fellow agents....

I couldn't agree with you more Richard! I've been slacking off in this area but I do plan to update and add more content this week. Then I'm putting a reminder in my calendar to do this each week at least!

Great analogy.  After working in my own yard and feeling in the ole back, you are right in saying the website takes work and consistent tending.  I have heard that in order to keep people coming back to your website you must change things up.

Richard, That is a great analogy. It does require constant weeding, planting, and amending of the soil.

Frank and Jodi..

It is very strategic, that's for sure. Thanks for the comment!

Jackie...

I have been remiss in many areas, but I am working on it now. Thanks so much!

Paula...

Like a garden, a website is a living, breathing thing! And it requires tending. Thanks for taking the time to comment on my post!

Darn, I'm not looking forward to April: garden cleanup and websute maintenance...there's only so many hours in the day. But your post is s good reminder that maybe the website should get all it's care and feeding in March,  bacause gardening season starts soo.

Hi Richard, you are right, there is a lot going on behind the scene of a web site that needs professional attention on a regular basis, or the public won't find it useful and won't come back.

Richard, Mine is definitely a work in progress and hope to get the kinks worked out but yes, it must be kept current!

Great analogy Richard. You couldn't be more correct about the importance of maintaining your web site.

Finally got around to mowing my yard yesterday, the first time in 2010.  Thanks for the reminder that I now need to mow my web site.

It is a neverending task, but one that can't be put aside if you want to stay on top.

You have to "nurture" that site like a child. Then watch it grow. Like children you have to take care of it forever.

Richard, this internet thing has become a lot more complicated than anyone ever thought.  It takes a lot more time than most people ever thought it would.

Richard,

You have definitely provided a good anology to explain website maintenance.  I need to start paying more attention to your blogs, this is the second one for the day that I have learned something from
