I mean REALLY! For whatever reason, all of our financial systems run on a monthly cyclical basis, and when there are fewer days in the month, we get less time for our money.
Our mortgages, utility bills, and now ALL credit cards (effective today) are due on the same day each month. And if that month happens to have only twenty-eight days, so be it.
Somewhere out there someone is making BILLIONS of dollars on this bizarre anomaly of the calendar. And it’s not like we don’t have enough months with a day to spare.
Of course, some people with birthdays on the 31st of the month might lose out if their day was taken and applied to February! But there are a lot of “leap year babies” out there now and they seem to deal with it somehow!
And although I offer this article with tongue firmly implanted in cheek, that doesn’t change this simple fact:
I hate short months!

I hate short months too! The bills come quicker and sometimes I forget Feb is really short.
Look at this way Richard, it gets us closer to Spring! Woohoo! :) Have a great day :)
Short months, like longer ones, once past, don't matter
It all averages out in the end.....February's a cold month, I'm very happy to have it a short one!!!!
Monique...
I know it. I wonder who is in charge of this! lol and thanks.
Jackie...
OK, that actually makes sense to me! Thanks for playing along.
Janice...
That's really quite philosophical! Thanks so much.
Thank God it is a short month!---February, I mean. I think it makes the whole winter thing seem tolerable because once it is March, you KNOW spring is right there around the corner! Thanks for reminding me though that the bills are due NOW!!!
Richard,
With the weather we've been having, February could be shorter this year and I wouldn't miss a beat.
Rich
Barbara...
See, you're another one of those that looks at the bright side. Hmmm, there might be some kind of underlying personality test here. THX
Paula...
Wow, another "vote" in favor of the short month. Thanks for the positive spin.
Rich...
That seems to be the prevailing school of though around here. Thanks ,y friend.
Richard, Feb always confuses me, what can I say. I don't know who came up with the idea, but it is bizarre. I mean, what about all those leap year babies? And how did they pick February? Was it the least liked month? Let's make February shorter because after all, who likes it anyway? But wait, lets just confuse the heck out of everyone every 4 years and throw in an extra day.
Do leap year babies grow older slower than the rest of us poor unfortunates?
I agree * the SOONER we get through it * the SOONER we get to Spring and Warm Weather and Flowers!!! I am SO GLAD I have good exterior photos of my rental homes that I am putting up for re-lease this summer!!!
Richard, it is a little rough on planning, that's for sure. But unfortunately, it's here to stay, unless you want to end up with snow in August eventually.
I'm with you Richard,
Make them all 31 days.
I am right there with you. All of a sudden life is going too fast. How do you manage.
shelton
I say make them all 30 days..Of course there is probably some issue with the moon rotation or the sun or whatever. I am too simple minded to worry about the moon - just give me 30 days!
I love it! My birthday is in February. I remember in elementary school getting an answer wrong on the math test because I asked the teacher "how many days are in a month" and she said that I should know that. I calcluated that each average month was 30.5 days (it was a leap year) and wound up getting the answer wrong! I was supposed to use 30! I didn't know in the fourth grade they weren't expecting that much.
It balances out with the 31 day months. Look at the bright side, if you are being charged interest daily, there are only 28 days charged instead of 30 or 31 (I know be whip-dee ;). The real tragedy is 2-3 less days to close real estate transactions!
Richard,
Our family is completely self-employed....I am with you on this!!!!!
Richard...I was two days short of being a "leap - Baby", I'm glad that didn't occur, but it is tough to pay all the revolving charges 2-3 days early one month of the year!!
Richard: I don't really mind this short month. Breaks up the same old boring, predictable 30 or 31 day months. As for the bills coming on the same day, I like it. Makes thing easy to remember.
But February being short makes it that much quicker to get from January to March, and in March is the start of spring. But yeah, I do hate the feeling of getting "less" for my money on monthly bills. But, on the positive, if you get a monthly stipend, like a pension or social security, it is that much quicker to the next payday.
Never looked at the short month like you do before. But you got a point. If you were born on the 29th of February does this mean one is 10 instead of 40?
Richard, isn't it fair that short people have a month dedicated to their way of life too? lol
Plus when most folks run out of money before they run out of month, this month they can coast through, don't they?
Richard, nice rant, but this calendar, Julian, was put together long before the banks started with their credit card tricks. It never breaks even and I agree about the bills
I don't mind short months if I'm having a bad month. I know it will be over sooner than normal.
Sorry, Richard, but you would have to take the 1st away from March to even things out.
Richard, so true. I pay all my bills on the 30th. So in Feb, I simply just don't pay my bills. I blame it on the calendar.
