I have always been an independent free thinker. I prefer figuring out things on my own to attending a class or engaging the assistance of others.
This self-generated capacity of semi-enlightened vision has always left me at odds with the powers that be. I have been branded as nonconformist, or a renegade.
But I think that often creativity is squelched by control parameters and excessive oversight. In many cases, “rocking the boat” is considered counter-productive.
However, the newest success stories in business are those companies that embrace creativity and encourage new ideas. The competitive edge is razor thin and sometimes it takes a new outlook to propel an enterprise to the next level.
I wonder how many life-enriching ideas have been relegated to the recycle bin due to short-sighted management practices and rigid guidelines.
Goodness only know what we have lost.

An open mind leads to innovation. I get so tired of hearing "it is not how we always have done it!"
Ricahrd in Corp America mediocraty is rewarded. INnovation is viewed with alarm. That is why so many small businesses do so well. Look at American car makers to prove my point.
Reminds me of a quote,"Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats." --Howard Aiken
Richard, so true. Look for opportunities and 'out of the box' solutions to lifes' little road blocks and problems.
Richard, I wonder if 'thinking outside the box' can be taught.
Gary...
That is exactly the kind of phrase that squashes new ideas. Thanks so much, my friend.
Charlie...
Those are excellent points, and I agree completely. THX.
Mel...
Wow, that is a great quote and oh so true! It's great to hear from you my friend.
Richard, first of all, I spent about 5 minutes trying to figure out the photo, LOL. I am with you, I am always on the outside of the box with my thinking. Creativity, on the whole, is not rewarded. Everyone says they want outside the box thinking, but from one who is usually outside that box, no one really does want that.
Great post!
I think Melody hit it on the head.....if one does not conform, it considered a negative....
Gabe...
It is essential to growth and prosperity. THX
Linda...
I don't think so, but hey, I'm a renegade. Thanks.
Andrea...
It's the fear of failure that drives most decisions. Thanks so much my friend.
Richard, we do expect so much, and more rapid enlightenment these days. More technology and life improvement has occurred in the past 20 years than the previous 2,000 years...so we do expect this learning curve to continue improving.
I think the pressure to conform, to answer questions (Like how are you?) with pat answers, has a parallel in the new media. Ever notice that immediately after a presidential debate or presidential address the media has a program to tell you what you just heard. Tell you how many times the republicans clapped compared to the number of times the Dems did. They tell you how many times the word Iraq was used, as if quantifying a speech was necessary for the general public to comprehend the meaning of what was just said.
Keep being open-minded and let others be open-minded too.
So true and so sad, Richard. Had never heard Melody's comment "Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats.", but isn't it true?
Wow, it is a scary thought to think that brilliant ideas have been crushed or tossed into the garbage due to short sightedness. Innovation has been the guiding light for our country in the past. Let's hope it carries on through the future. Great post!
I don't want to think about what's outside the box, just about what is in the picture of your post.
What the heck is that anyway? I think you are "toying" with us. But I'm not sure.
Hi Richard, Good for you! I think it's great to be a free thinker and often times a nonconformist. I have a teenage daughter that walks a fine line. She's a great person: smart, creative and incredibly intuitive. In school many teachers have tried to stuff her into a little box to suit their comfort level. I have bucked this for years. I want her to be her own person.
Hi Richard:
I am exactly the same way...Definitely a nonconformist...
I much prefer to figure it out for myself!
I love the quote that Melody included here.
Richard,
I bet if you ran a survey of all us Realtors that most of us are nonconformists....that's why we work for ourselves.
Richard...Funny you should be called a renegade. I was just called this in a place by a small group of people that you would never have guessed.
Somehow I do see you that way. I guess that is why we see eye to eye so often!
Richard, we will never know of all the ideas that sit on shelves gathering dust because someone couldn't see the potential or was afraid of what it would do to an industry entrenched in the economy.
Richard:
You are indeed a renegade as evidenced by the photo for this blog. I am still staring at it in wonderment.
I don't even want to tell you what my broker, owner said to me 17 years ago when I told her that I wanted to practice "buyer brokerage." I empathize with what it is like to be different.
It's a good thing!
A man of my own heart. Independent thinking. A novel concept. I also like figuring things out for myself.
Creativity should always be embraced. You never know where that next great idea will come from, so there's no need in fighting against it.
