There something special about a quadrennial event. There’s the constant aura of “it’s now or never” that drives participants to their highest level of performance. After all, four years is a relatively long time in a young person’s life.
What is even more interesting is the overall change in technology that coincides with these cyclical events. During the last Winter Games in Italy, the fabric of the World Wide Web was woven quite differently. Static web pages were the norm, and Facebook was not yet open to everyone and Twitter did not even exist.
Social networking was in its infancy in 2006 and no one would have predicted how in the four years from Torino to Vancouver the world would become connected on a very personal level.
While technology changes from year to year, every four years yields a paradigm shift in both the appliances that we use and the software that powers them. Laptops got bigger and bigger and now smaller and smaller. Our handheld devices have incredible power that not even Chester Gould could have imagined.
I can’t wait to see how everything changes by the time the Winter Games are held in Sochi in 2014.
I’ll bet it will be incredible!

Richard, technology has enabled us to communicate with each other in an instant. No longer do we have to wait for the evening news or wait for tomorrows news paper. It will be interesting to see what 2014 brings.
it's amazing when you think about it in that sense.....there will always be something new and different to learn.....it does get more difficult to become accustomed to change....but it's necessary.
Michael...
And God-willing, we'll all be here to see it! Thanks, my friend.
Barbara...
It's changing REALLY fast now, it's hard for anyone to keep up! THX
Good morning Richard,
Technology has opened up lines of communication for so many things. Yesterday at the Austin Marathon we could track son on an app on our iPhone! After he went by us we could see how he finished..amazing!!!
This is so true! Technology seems to be increasing to fast, as the years roll by. We are so fortunate!
Richard - The advances in technology is just mind-boggling. We are truly able to enjoy events like the Olympics in ways we never thought possible.
Richard,
What our "phones" do today you would have needed a laptop with wifi, GPS, MP3 player just to keep up...and that's as of this morning.
Richard... I am going to disagree with you on one point. The point that you can't wait to see what technology is in 2014. I can wait. My life is flying by so fast right now, that at the rate it's going 2014 will be next month. ;-}
Richard: I wonder if we'll still be watching television for the next Winter Olympics, or if it will become entirely web-based.
Hi Richard... Liz Moras posted yesterday about 100 Olympians who are Tweeting from Vanocouver. It really got me thinking about how much information sharing has changed since the last Winter Olympics!
Hi Richard, I particularly like being able to watch the events I want to watch the next day on demand without commercial interruption.
Richard, twitter and facebook have become so ingrained in our online lives that it's almost hard to imagine that just 4 short years ago, they weren't even avail. Technological change is happening at an exponential pace and could very likely accelerate in the coming years. These are exciting times!
Mike
Hi Richard. Things certainly have changed over the 4 years...
Go Olympics!
Ken
Richard,
You have raised a very interesting point and one can only imagine what technology will look like in four years. One thing for sure I do not think that it will resemble a slide rule..
A good ob servation, Richard. It is going so fast this old man is having to double time to keep up. The next 4 years will indeed be interesting to say the least.
As Scarlett said, "Tomorrow is another day."
"I can't wait to see how everything changes by the time the Winter Games are held in Sochi in 2014."
Richard, will be there before we realize it....Unfortunately...
Four years is a long time in terms of technology. You buy a laptop today and next week a better one comes out, so imagine going through four years of that process.
I saw a good stat today on the olympics. In the Winter Olympics the chance of getting hurt are 40%, in the Summer it is only 10%. Speed kills as they say. Wonder what will be new in another four years?
