The opening ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games will commence tonight, Friday February 12, 2010 in Vancouver.
And while many consider the Olympic Games to be a passing spectacle, those of us that have experienced the thrill of living and working in a host city during the international celebration of sport will always enjoy a kindred spirit with those that have shared the experience.
Some of the cities are well known names like Rome, Berlin and Los Angeles. Others would be unheard of were it not for the Olympics, such as Lake Placid, Grenoble and Sapporo.
When you invite the entire world to your city, things are bound to change. Atlanta experienced an economic boom and explosive growth for years after the event.
The Olympics changed Atlanta forever. The legacy of the games is visible everywhere from Turner Field (formerly Olympic Stadium) to dormitories at Georgia State and Georgia Tech. (formerly the Olympic village.)
So today, I welcome our sister city Vancouver to the ranks of Olympic host, and I look forward to seeing some incredible competition that will be forever associated with your city
Let the games begin!

Hi Richard, I remember when Atlanta was the host city back then. I thought that was so great. It was nice seeing your city on t.v. during those Olympics. Kind of like a virtual tour since I was not there in person. The Winter Olympics are my favorite and I can't wait to see it! :)
Richard, you photos are really looking good. I'd go ask you all these technical questions about them....but then that kind of ruins the whole thing. I think I will just enjoy!
I too am looking forward to the Winter Olympics. I didn't realize Atlanta had a new sister in Vancouver. Welcome to the family.
Good morning Richard,
Thanks for reminding us the prestige and good that comes with hosting the Olympic Games besides the sheer enjoyment of watching athletes who have trained their whole lives to participate! Vancouver is a gorgeous city..a great event begins today!
Richard, very exciting, I love the Winter Olympics. I will be on the road during the opening ceremony, but hubby is poised to tape it for me!
Richard.....I love every minute of watching the olympics and the great competitors......it's very exciting....
I enjoy the winter games especially all the fast stuff like bobsledding. Who says a NASCAR fan can't like the Olympics?
Richard, the Winter Olympics are always great to watch. I know I will my TV tuned to the events. Thanks.

It is awesome, isn't it! THX
It doesn't seem like it was that long ago, Richard. Time flies.
Hi Richard. Time does fly. I remember Michael Johnson dominating in those games like it was yesterday. Well, almost yesterday.:)
Love the Olympics!
Ken
I love the Olympics, especially the Winter games. There's nothing better to bring the world together like the Olympics.
Let the games begin!
Hi Richard, there is a lot of excitement here in the Northwest with the opening of the games. It will all be a great show. Enjoy!
I like to watch the Olympics as well. I hope Vancouver does as good of a job as Atlanta did.
The winter Olympics are exciting to watch...Looking forward to seeing photos of Vancouver.
I have been waiting for the games to begin. At least something other than political games
Hi Richard, I can't believe it's already that time again. I love keeping my eye on the Olympics. It must be an honor for Vancouver to be able to host the games.
I am sooooooooooooo excited for opening ceremonies tonight. Let the games begin...
Richard,
I had an opportunity to visit your city during the Olympics and it was buzzing 24 hours a day. All I can say it is a marvelous event.
I think it would be a double edged sword. Absolutely crazy and a wonderful time, yet crazy and frustrating! But what an experience to remember!
Richard: I got to visit Olympic Park when I came to Atlanta years ago. Even three or four years after the games, it was a thrill to be in that place.
I missed the opening ceremonies, but I always enjoy watching the Olympics. I imagine it is a lot of fun to live in a host city and see the spectacle from start to finish.
