It’s Super Bowl Sunday in America, and it’s one of those “event” times that are hard to ignore. And although it is a relatively new “holiday,” Super Bowl Sunday ranks with Thanksgiving and Christmas as gathering day for families and friends.
And it’s also our biggest celebration of “junk” food. We devour all of the things that are bad for us but taste so good. Millions of chicken wings, bratwurst sausages and pizzas will be washed down with plenty of beer and other potent beverages.
I remember the first AFL-NFL World Championship in January of 1967. It was not officially called the Super Bowl, but the term began being used by the media to hype the event. At some point (the exact date varies from source to source) the name was officially changed to the Super Bowl, and the Roman Numerals were added as identifiers.
I have personally observed the entire metamorphosis of the Super Bowl from a simple game to a national obsession. I choose to participate because it’s a break from the mundane and the ordinary and it’s a lot of fun!
And I LOVE a grilled bratwurst!

Richard....I love a grilled ANYTHING.....that's my favorite and now I'm REEEEEALLY looking forward to spring.....it's only 11 degrees here today....I'll pass on the grilling.
Richard, very cute post...Dang....and busted! We don't watch sports and so Super Bowl Sunday does not have much meaning for us. My first marriage was to an avid sports enthusiast on all levels....so I must have burned up all my Karma with sports. Since you have reminded me that it is Super Bowl Sunday, we might just have to tune in and see if the game is any good. I don't even know who's playing but the grilled Bratwurst sounds like the best part!
Amazing the changes since 1967! The commercials, the major half time show...only one thing has not changed - the game!
Super Bowl Sunday means a day of little traffic and few crowds. Take out lines may be long, but restaurants are fairly empty. My anniversary is always close to Super Bowl Sunday and my non sports fan hubby uses this day to dine out at one of those spots that are hard to get to on busier Sundays.
Good morning Richard,
The commercials have really changed! This past week they had a show on CBS and you voted on the best commercial of the decade! I voted for the E-Trade Baby..I think that commercial is hysterical!! It came in second..Booooo!!! We will be watching the game..after 2 open houses and an appointment!
Richard, Even the US Census is getting in on the act of advertising during the game. The viewership numbers are just too big to ignore.
Enjoy,
Steve
Barbara...
I boil the bratwurst first in beer with chapped onions, and then grill them to get a nice crust. I like saurkraut and mustard on a nice poppy seed roll. YUM! Stay warm, and have a great Sunday.
Jeanean...
Ah, but you get to have a party and eat lots of good food ... so it can still be fun whether or not you like the game. Thanks for the sincere comment!
Gary...
I'm looking forward to this one, but it will be hard to beat last year's fantastic finish! Thanks my friend.
Lora...
Just so it's not a sport's bar! lol and thanks for the comment.
Dorie...
I got my weekend work done yesterday, my partner and I both wrote offers. Today we'll stay home and eat bad stuff! Have a great day my friend.
Steve...
In most years, it's the most watched program. It really is hard to ignore. Thanks do much.
I participate when there is a party - otherwise I wouldn't even know if the game was on :)
Aside from Christmas, it is the time you can say, sorry, I'll be watching FOOTBALL! Besides, the WHO at halftime? My phone is OFF!
I am going to refrain from making any predictions in this comment. I hope that we will be able to open up the grill today and do some burgers and brats. Got my appitizers, chips, salsa, nuts (family & friends), and adult beverages. So we are set for a rollickin good time.
Richard * I've tried that with NASCAR and it is HARD, very HARD....you only have to go a day; luckily, I have to go 10 months. I see failure in my future
Richard, so, big Superbowl Party at your place? I am on my way!
We don't watch it here, we do love the commercials though. Hubby watches soccer, or as he says, the REAL football. What does he know anyway.
Have a great day, eat a brat for me.
The weather has probably messed up many Superbowl parties in this area. I know we are going nowhere, watching at home. At least I have some chips or else it would be really sad )-:
Richard, sounds like this is going to be a fun day for all. Have a good time and save me a bratwurst.
Hi Richard, enjoy a day of something that is truly American through and through. Remember, moderation in all things, including moderation.
Super Bowl Sunday has become a National Celebration. I hardly ever watch football. This is one of the few times I do.
Who doesn't like junk food, and grilled bratwurst! Since shrimp trays were on sale, buy on, get one free we will be also treating ourselves to lots of shrimp cocktail.
Richard, I was amazed that I actually got a call to do an inspection today. I think my buyer is actually looking for a way to avoid the super bowl:)
WOW!!! The Super Bowl is TODAY! I have not heard a thing about it. Well, I am glad I have all the munchies already, the stores will be bought out. ;-}
Enjoy the Game my friend....GO SAINTS!
Richard grilled bratwurst? Really if you make it down here for the convention this year I will be glad to get you some char-grilled oysters, boiled shrimp and crawfish. You have to get off that Midwestern diet.
As one of the most watched programs in television history, it's hard not to make a football reference today!
Enjoy the game....and your grilled bratwurst!
Richard, being from Pittsburgh it's very very very hard to not be engrossed in the Super Bowl! January 20th - 1980 I gave birth to our son at Magee-Womens Hospital where the race was to get everyones tv's on in their rooms for the game. That iron curtain was on a roll. I heard more blue words coming from down the hall (and it wasn't because of labor pains!!) Great memories! Have fun today... GO SAINTS!!
Richard: I am thrilled that my husband will be making his famous guacamole for tonight's enjoyment. There is nothing like Superbowl food.
Richard - enjoy your brats! They've really been on sale here. It's a bit cold for grilling tho. I can't wait to watch the Saints get their butts kicked! Peyton will surely give them a go for their money. I think they play dirty - the last 2 games it was all about taking out the quarterbacks.
The game is just getting started and I have already eaten all kinds of junk foor! Oops! Hope it's an exciting game.
Richard, Another one of the great reasons for Americans to partake in junk food. Super Bowl! It'll be a great one!
Just stopped by to let you, and anyone reading this, know that there's an ActiveRain Super Bowl Party going on. Stop by if you have a chance.
Hi Richard... any holiday that's celebrated with grilled bratwurst is one that I will celebrate! :)
And what a game it was....a couple extra beers, but had to call it quits....Jury duty tomorrow...UGH!
Great game, Richard. I thought that it was ironic that the Saints beat their former quarterbacks son...
Sorry Richard, I couldn't comment in time for this post since I was partaking in the big day. Hope you enjoyed the bratwurst.
Go junk food! I'm sure you enjoyed that bratwurst immensely! :)
Just One Bratwurst?
I love Bratwurst myself, but this year we ended up with pizza and chicken wings. And of course a few other forms of junk food as well.
